Good sized market town;
Nice countryside but near large town/city;
Excellent primary schools, stretching;
Some choice of private schools;
Able to walk to school instead of drive;
Pretty town, aesthetically pleasing;
Refined feel to the area;
1 and a half hours commute to London.

Can anyone help me name this town? Or does it not exist? Thank you!

Bury St. Edmunds is lovely, we thought of moving there ourselves, we often spend the day there, it's so relaxed. The schools are good & the crime rate is low. If you chose one of the surrounding villages they are much cheaper than Bury itself. Wink

Keiza beat me to it - East Anglia.

ludixon · 10/06/2012 20:27

Lewes. Farnham. Horsham.

ludixon · 10/06/2012 20:28

Or Haywards Heath.

VerityClinch · 10/06/2012 20:38

Tenterden.

20 min drive to Ashford then 37 mins on high speed line to St Pancras.

It's bloody LOVELY here.

Further to my recommendation of Lymington - I really can not imagine anyone regretting moving to this part of the world, in a million years. Everyone you meet feels lucky to live here. The New Forest is amazing and you have the beach on your doorstep too. There really is so much to do, amazing for kids. And in terms of schools, there are a really high proportion of Outstanding schools (both state and private).

I'd live in Lewes if I could afford it, it's a beautiful town.

MamaD1 · 16/06/2012 23:29

Radlett
St Albans

Cambridge and surrounding villages. Plenty of excellent secondaries and some truly superb primaries. Go west of Cambridge to take your pick of trains from Huntingdon too.

Pretty town, aesthetically pleasing;

We live in watford which dosen't cover these two points but St Albans only 10 mins away does.

Lovely place wish we could move :)

EBDTeacher · 17/06/2012 19:48

Has anybody said Wokingham? Ticks every box.

EBDTeacher · 17/06/2012 19:49

Or Beaconsfield.

Blu · 17/06/2012 19:50

Brockham, Surrey.

Blu · 17/06/2012 19:51

oops, no, sorry - that's a village.

Mintyy · 17/06/2012 19:51

Winchester

dumbelina · 17/06/2012 19:52

Definitely Wokingham! Lovely town, very near Reading for good shopping, excellent schools, good links into London too.

AbigailS · 17/06/2012 19:54

I think it will all come down to ££££! We were considering moving when my DH had the chance of a move within his company. Even with relocation expenses we decided the house prices in the best parts of both options were too high.

eandh · 17/06/2012 19:56

To be picky there are 2 places in Kent one town is tunbridge and then there is tunbridge wells (spelt differently!) but basically most of Kent is accessible to London fairly quickly, I live in Maidstone (county town of Kent) and its less than an hour on the train to central London and there is the high speed train too, nice good schools in certain areas and quite a few private schools! Lots of lovely surrounding villages such as tenter den, head corn, cranbrook etc too (Maidstone is a a very varies big town with Salem beautiful parts and other arts you would tend to avoid!)

eandh · 17/06/2012 20:01

Aargh iPad autocorrected it is Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells

Snoopkat · 17/06/2012 20:08

Haywards Heath...

CuddyMum · 29/06/2012 18:23

100% Olney! Do you want to buy a house? :o

gramercy · 29/06/2012 19:44

I've come a bit late to this thread, but you are describing Winchester. But because every other middle-class bugger has your wish list too, the house prices are horrendous. A Victorian terraced house (4 bed) is at least £650K and that's with no frontage, just a blasted parking permit, and if you want a detached in the right area it's £1m +. Londoners pour in to breed and there are usually vast numbers of cash buyers per property.

CuddyMum · 12/07/2012 17:00

Where are you located now and when are you planning on moving?
