A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

DC can see their friends on facetime and I suspect a lot of them will be hanging out in fortnite world!

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 18:33

@GinAndTonicNeeded I was wondering the same

Sprayitall · 16/03/2020 18:38

@HasaDigaEebowai we don’t have contacts of many as she started school just last sep

MrsWhites · 16/03/2020 18:45

How to explain the situation to children is a concern for me too.

One of mine is a teen and thinks her life is going to end if she can’t see her friends for weeks on end.

My youngest is 5 and I’m very conscious of explaining to him why he can’t go to football or soon school without making him anxious. So far I’ve just explained there are some bad germs making some people sick and that’s why we need to wash our hands so often.

MissusMaker · 16/03/2020 18:45

Erm, Matt Hancock in the HoC basically saying something completely different??! He says only those over 70 with underlying conditions need to isolate. Don't they talk to each other???!

Sassenach85 · 16/03/2020 18:46

I feel like I’m on the verge here, Wtaf is going on with this govt????

Simple question .... work from home where possible.... why can’t they just say keep kids home if possible???

School staff are completely being thrown to the lions here?

Whatthefoxgoingon · 16/03/2020 18:48

I think I heard it’s 55 deaths on the news.

VivaLeBeaver · 16/03/2020 18:49

Well I thought over 70s needed to self isolate regardless of other conditions. Matt Hancock i think is confused. Boris was clear it was over 70s plus anyone under 70 with underlying issues.

tinkywinkyshandbag · 16/03/2020 18:51

@Sprayitall We are in exactly the same boat and I am currently not being paid either, I'm self-employed and my business is one that just doesn't
work in this environment. We are going to ask the mortgage company for a mortgage holiday and possibly borrow some money from family. We have no savings and nothing coming in at all Shock

MissusMaker · 16/03/2020 18:54

I agree that BoJo and Chris W were explicit that it includes all over 70s - both mentioned that fit and well were included - but that's not what Matt Hancock is saying?

AlohaMolly · 16/03/2020 18:59

My PIL are supposed to be self isolating (me, DS and DP are) through direct contact, but they fucked off out to town to buy paint today. I was disgusted.

I knew it was coming, thanks to this thread, but honestly, these measures will mean the end of us. DP has his own business in outdoor activities which means he now has all his work cancelled on him. I’m in the tourism business too, along with at least half our village. I feel sick and terrified. We will lose our house and everything we have.

BanKittenHeels · 16/03/2020 19:02

This is a useful live video

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 19:02

We are already down to our last 4 weeks of savings so they will have to do something Aloha. There will be hundreds of thousands of us, if not millions.

I have a thread going about financial impact - will link...

How to mentally prepare our dc’s for social distancing and being at home without seeing their friends for longer

We have a group Skype chat with their closest friends, today we had it running and they just chatted as they would normally do at school. Was quite cheery.

We’ve kept the DC informed that we need to do this to keep others well and that they are an amazing part of the effort to fight the virus. The smaller children say “we are the virus army” when washing their hands.

BanKittenHeels · 16/03/2020 19:08

Can you set up a Facebook group or WhatsApp group and add the people you do know and ask them to add the people they know?

We have a Facebook group for each year at our school. They have recently been popping them into local community Facebook groups to make people aware they are thee.

BanKittenHeels · 16/03/2020 19:09

I think I heard it’s 55 deaths on the news.

I heard 53 at 6pm and then it was quickly updated.

MagisCapulus · 16/03/2020 19:19

Does someone have a link to a reputable source re the working form home please that I can show my boss?

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 19:23

@wheresmymojo thank you so much for those stats

@VenetoResident and I mad of does make 13% death rate of tested cases 😱

AlohaMolly · 16/03/2020 19:24

@wheresmymojo I think I have about a month and a half if I have no travel expenses or wages at all. If I locked down my grocery budget and had SSP then maybe 3 months. DP has roughly 3 months left too, maybe five/six if he gets a mortgage break? But that’s ours running at the same time, not three months and then three months if that makes sense.

Most of my outgoings are debt Blush do we think debt companies will give payment breaks?

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 19:27

I have tried my mortgage lender and car finance so far and both said no last week BUT I think this will have to change TBH.

Worth calling and asking even if they say no to begin with so it gets flagged to senior management that lots of people are calling saying they need it.

MagisCapulus · 16/03/2020 19:31

ok I found it on the BBC - it hadnt updated when I looked. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51917562

Legoandloldolls · 16/03/2020 19:31

@aloha interesting question re doubt break as dh has a dmp

wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 19:59

Lots of different interpretations going on as to what 'avoid all non-social contact' means.

So far I've seen people say it doesn't include:

  • Hairdressers
  • Gyms & personal training
  • Kids activity classes
Hmm
wheresmymojo · 16/03/2020 20:00

Sorry * all non-essential social contact
