Prepping for a Pandemic... 15

A lot of us have been here before. We Prepped for Brexit. Some of us are Heathcare workers. We prepare for the worst every day. It's difficult to predict what will happen in our lives. In our lifetime. Will we get Cancer? Will a huge meteorite wipe the world out?

One thing is for sure, this new virus is either affecting us, or is going to affect us all very soon. You are all already onboard. I hope you are prepared and much as you can be. And in the meantime this thread is here to support us all.

This week will bring many new challenges. We are almost certain to have some sort of lockdown. Like other parts of Europe. We aren't special. We aren't different. We are all
fragile souls. But I hope we live to tell the tale.

God Speed.

@BanKittenHeels I’m hiding on the prepper threads because of the general distain for ‘preppers’ on the coronavirus boards. I know the anger comes from fear but it’s misplaced.

Scary increase in cases today, thanks @ofwarren for the info. If they don’t announce school closures in England today I’m taking my kids out anyway. Wish I’d done it earlier. Easy for me to say as a SAHM but Lots of parents will be up the creek without a paddle when schools close. I already know of one parent who sent her kid in with a temp and cough because she couldn’t miss work

Fivefourthree · 18/03/2020 14:33

It was 72 as of earlier today, sprayitall

MoonlightMistletoe · 18/03/2020 14:46

That jump is crazy. If Boris says schools remain open I am going to have a breakdown.

Notashandyta · 18/03/2020 14:51

Whay time bojo today please?

katienana · 18/03/2020 14:52

Now I will be surprised if schools stay open. I went to poundland on monday and bought some more craft materials. Going to order a printer now.
I went to hospital today for wound care and going back again next week, it was pretty much business as usual there. I went to M&S afterwards and they had plenty of bread which Id run out of. So I would try there as they had plenty of stock even as other shops are decimated

inmylifeIlovedthemall · 18/03/2020 15:02

I am with you WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles

Just drove home thinking that being left off the Whatsapp group is like all the times I wasn’t picked for the Netball team.

I have also been here since the early thread but namechanged on thread 12 or 13.

I guess we just need to ensure this thread is as fabulous as it always was.

Moodykat · 18/03/2020 15:04

So glad the thread has picked up again. It has been my sanity since the beginning. Had a massive meltdown today, my work are now all wfh and I think I miss having company more than I thought I would. Thank you all.

nightshade1 · 18/03/2020 15:06

Just had news that DD school is closing to her year from tomorrow, almost cried with relief. Didn't quite realise how anxious I was about it.

MoonlightMistletoe · 18/03/2020 15:07

Just had an email from the school saying it's remaining open so that parents can still go to work and keep the country running.

Also that if needed to self isolate then the absence record will not be effected.

They are sending work packs home and online platform log in details for every student to prepare for a lockdown if and when it comes to it.

Fivefourthree · 18/03/2020 15:21

@WeBuiltCisCityOnSexistRoles I've just caught up with this. I really hope you start to feel better soon, and wishing you and your family all the best FlowersCake

CakeOnMe · 18/03/2020 15:23

@MoodykatFlowers we’re all in this together

HuggedTheRedwoods · 18/03/2020 15:24

I think some posters might also just be stepping back and taking a breather from boards and the internet in general. Some days can feel a bit information overload and overwhelming so its good to take a break now and again.

Some great reminders in recent posts though - the plug-in phone (we dont use our landline often but do have a plug in phone as its on a windowsill out the way) and finding alternatives to streaming like dvds as the internet infrastructure is going to experience unprecedented demand in the coming weeks with so many more working from home and kids at home online when the schools close. There have already been network outtages, might not be demand related, but I wonder if networks have ever tested this potential usage level.

Fivefourthree · 18/03/2020 15:29

Yes, I made sure we have proper books and puzzles and drawing stuff and whatnot here.
DH is working from home and his Internet has dropped a couple of times already, and it's making him swear.
But on the other hand, aren't people just using the same amount of Internet, just in different places?
Clearly, it is not something I understand.
I am grateful to have non internetty stuff to be getting on with!

Readyme · 18/03/2020 15:30

I'm seriously worried about internet not coping, our rural internet isn't great, we aren't on broadband I can cope with limited streaming but DH needs it for work.

originalcatlady · 18/03/2020 15:40

DC sent home to self isolate. I'm actually quite annoyed as they're actually well, a teacher felt DD head and said she had a temp. Her temp is 36 but we aren't allowed back now.
I've had to close my business and my insurers won't pay out because it's not a confirmed case.
No learning pack for DS.

originalcatlady · 18/03/2020 15:41

Also, all my mates are texting saying well done for prepping!

MissPoldark · 18/03/2020 15:51

But on the other hand, aren't people just using the same amount of Internet, just in different places?

I don’t think so because at work (in many cases) your connection is via network cables & servers, but remote working uses the internet.
I’m assuming an office job with local shared drives & applications.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 18/03/2020 16:09

Looks like I've found you all again just at the end of this thread! I've been staying away as last few days have been very stressed about it all, especially as over the weekend DH was being really cross with me for "being morbid" and "overreacting" ie telling him he couldn't go to the gym... He did shut up after the news on Monday about staying away from pubs etc and hearing the latest figures. He can now swallow his words again as the schools close (I wanted to keep them off, he told me I was over the top Hmm)
Actually feel calmer now the schools are closing- means people will hopefully have to realise the seriousness of the situation. I'm still trying to manage my business, only 1 staff member self -isolating atm, just because someone in her household has developed a cough. Hoping absences can be staggered (we can't close, vet's surgery) and we can get through.
At least feels like something being done now. Hope it's enough

PancakeFiend · 18/03/2020 16:12

Schools in Wales all to be shut by Friday, a lot closed already.

HasaDigaEebowai · 18/03/2020 16:17

Re the internet usage. We don't generally have the entire country's school aged population all playing fortnite during the day..

BlackeyedSusan · 18/03/2020 16:18

Don't use tweezers to get out a sting, it will make it worse

Use a flat object, Eg credit card if out, butterknife, to slide across the skin/sting so you don't squeeze any more poison in. ( Used keys when dc was stung under armpit by a nasty that crawled up his sleeve.

CakeOnMe · 18/03/2020 16:27

32 more deaths, ages ranged between 59 and 94- all with underlying health conditions

Legoandloldolls · 18/03/2020 16:39

Checking in after a lovely day pootling around my deserted town with my friend.

Just watching the news now

FAAARRRRRKKKKKK!!

MrsWhites · 18/03/2020 16:40

Impatiently awaiting today’s briefing. I’ve been told education secretary will be with BJ today so seems certain to announce school closures. I will literally melt down if they don’t!

My sons primary are struggling for teachers now apparently.

I don’t know about anyone else but I’m finding it really hard to settle and to concentrate on anything else. I keep waking up in the night worrying about it too!
