Thread 11.

This prepping for a pandemic pack was posted one one of the previous threads, I thought I’d post for this thread as there’s more people joining the threads. I had a quick scan through the last couple of thread to find a list that’s been posted a few times but couldn’t find it. The pack seems a bit end of days in some parts buts it’s got some useful ideas.

Pandemic Preparedness Pack

The Emotional Prep thread started by @Neome might be worth a look for those of us feeling anxious as things ramp up.

Also attached a screenshot of a post on previous threads by @blackeyesusan (hope you don’t mind) with storage ideas for those of us living in smaller homes.

I am prepping for us all getting it and a 2-3 week period of feeling unwell, basing it on how I felt when I had flu.
Just tidied out my medicine/ toiletries and cosmetics cupboard.
Feeling well prepared with plenty of adults cough and cold type stuff, kids calpol and calprofen and a back up supply of all our prescription medicines. DS has very mild asthma and we have enough inhalers so DH and I can use one if we need to (have both had them in prescription in the past but ok now).
So glad I prepped for Brexit and feel smug about my loo roll stash which was bought gradually through 2018 and 2019.
I kept finding bar soap, I must have about 10 bars 😂
Also grateful for my addiction to US Bath and bodyworks stuff as have a good stash of their alcohol hand gels and liquid hand wash.
Hand cream- my favourite is green atrixo if very dry and have a few of these.
My main concern now is keeping DS fed and entertained if he’s not bad and we’re quite poorly. Stocked freezer/ cupboards up on cheese, wraps, bread, beans, soup, sausages, pasta, tomato sauce and meatballs as these are the mainstay of his diet and easy for us to throw together with minimal effort.
Can you freeze hummus? I know I can make it and have a Brexit stash of chickpeas but hummus wraps are something DS can make himself if we’re ill
Also got individual cereals so he can help himself to breakfast, and have plenty of snack stuff.
Entertainment - Netflix obviously! I bought his birthday Lego early and hid it. Yesterday Aldi had nice Lego activity books so got a couple which are for holiday if not Covid.

Not sure if someone has posted this link already , apologies if so .

@ofwarren - I’m glad, do what you need to do to get treated ❤️

@Neome I pick a twig and scratch it then discard 😂

Gardeners... dandelion leaves substitute rocket salad nicely. Loads of vitamins

That’s my excuse for the state of my garden right now anyway

Duckyneedsaclean · 07/03/2020 14:10

Why are they late with the announcement every day?? Driving me up the wall.

I've just seen this petition re:closing schools. It's being signed rapidly (you can see the numbers going up)

TipseyTorvey · 07/03/2020 14:17

Maybe they won't do a weekend announcement. Their plan seems to be 'pretend it's nothing serious' so keeping the numbers til Monday might fit with that. I hope not because it makes me twitchy.

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 14:17

They have announced for the last few weekends so I still think they are just late.

Just a note about Dr John Campbell. As pp said he was originally a nurse not medical doctor then became a nurse trainer and his PhD was about medical education. Trainee doctors and nurses all over the world have been using his YouTube lectures to back up their training for several years (in the early videos he has dark hair and no glasses!) and he’s written two textbooks.

In January he started explaining the meaning of the information in the news to his audience and reviewing the emerging research including posting links to articles in eg The Lancet and explaining the usual course of acquiring an infection, being infectious, developing symptoms etc and how that appeared to be working with this outbreak.

I like that he is very frank when he doesn’t know something, tries to be dispassionate about the evidence and is quick to admit if he’s made a mistake.

In my mind he is an emerging hero of compassion and education.

@InconvenientPeg I tried orange peels and thought I did a great job until the cat next door came, sniffed and started to eat them all 😂
@hankyspanky my budget doesn’t stretch that far either. I have decided to do them in pots and may be move them around or try a raise bed and get dh involved (I’m sure he doesn’t have a green thumb - infact he is more of a lawn-mowing master procrastinator lol and finds silly reasons not to do it- FYI my rear garden is smallish and not even that big)

GalOopNorth · 07/03/2020 14:22

Oooh yes I would love to talk gardening- it’s a lovely gentle prep and I find it very good for stress relief too.

DH, DS and I have been out this morning preparing to put in some raised beds.

We’ve got a greenhouse with salad growing already, also seedlings of kale and some tomatoes growing.

This morning we planted seeds of sweet corn, french beans, broad beans, mange tout and purple sprouting broccoli. The aim is to be self sufficient in veg in a few months time. We’ll also plant a soft fruit bed with raspberries, gooseberries, black currant and some rhubarb.

We have some apple trees too but they are a bit old so not much of a harvest from them but they keep us in crumbles for a couple of months!

DH has also bought stacks of seeds (29p a pack in Lidl) of peppers, chilli, spinach but I haven’t got round to doing anything with them yet Smile

Neome · 07/03/2020 14:26

You are a fantastic bunch on here, regular and occasional posters, waving lurkers and all.

🙏🏽 hi to any silent lurkers too 🌸

ofwarren · 07/03/2020 14:29

So how many extra is that today?

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 14:31

My sainsburys order which I had booked last Monday for today is coming up and lots of things are not available and have been substituted. Half of which is of no use. (Including frozen veggie bags that’s been substituted ,no dettol wipes, no vit c lozenges or infant Calpol either, no nurofen, no branded hand washes, not even dd’s usual smoothies or andrex washlets) this is not looking good I should say

rhij86 · 07/03/2020 14:31

I find it hard to believe Wales only has 2 cases still? Are we just not bloody testing?

rhij86 · 07/03/2020 14:32

@ofwarren 43 extra

QueSera · 07/03/2020 14:32

42 more (163 yesterday)

Boreda · 07/03/2020 14:34

@rhij86 its worrying :( I dont think we are testing

Duckyneedsaclean · 07/03/2020 14:34

I wonder why 7am rather than 9am?

Puppycorn · 07/03/2020 14:39

@Ducky That petition was shared yesterday here and let’s hope it will be picked up for the debate soon. I’m dreading to send dd off to school on Monday . I was wondering the same why 7 am instead of 9 am!

Boreda · 07/03/2020 14:45

It said 7am yeaterday when first posted when I looked today it had changed back to 9am.

Only 1,122 people have been tested since yesterday is it mebe being picky and impatient or is that low Hmm

GalOopNorth · 07/03/2020 14:46

It is lower than the previous days - around 2k a day previously Hmm

I wonder if they had tested 2k what the numbers would have been?

Orchidflower1 · 07/03/2020 14:46

Was at an out of town shopping centre today ( needed to get ds bday gift that couldn’t be ordered) anyway I went to the loo and saw this one woman use the loo and not even wash her hands.
I felt disgusted with her and disgusted with myself for not having the guts to say something to her.
How can people do this even in normal circumstances let alone now! 🤢

katienana · 07/03/2020 14:54

I was in a big shopping centre last week a little girl came out of the cubicle and said "mummy I want to wash my hands"
"We haven't got time for that!" And off they went. How disgusting can you get
