Confusing Potty Shot

Hi all. I’m currently 18+5 and had a gender scan at exactly 15 weeks. I was told that the baby is a girl, and without second thought spent a fortune preparing for a girl.

I’m now so worried that it’s actually a boy? Can someone please bring me back to reality. I suffer with ridiculous anxiety and have spent the last 3 hours staring at this potty shot.

I have my 20 week scan on Monday, but I just need some reassurance or opinions for now!

And that’s just a ridiculously way to look at it. The abuse on this post is fucking disgusting.

Well it sounds like you don’t know what a potty is…

titchy · 12/03/2025 12:46

Words matter. You're even using the wrong website - this is Mumsnet not Netmums....

Yes everyone says gender reveal - but they mean sex. Gender is a social construct - as your baby isn't born yet you don't know which gender they will identify with. You will know the sex though.

Regardless - 15 weeks is very very early to be able to tell the sex accurately. And really all that matter is if baby is healthy.

HebeMumsnet · 12/03/2025 12:47

Afternoon, everyone. This thread seems to be becoming a bit derailed. It looks like the OP is more than aware now that lots of people haven't heard the term 'potty shot' before and think 'sex scan' is clearer, but we think it's pretty obvious what she meant. Could we just get back to discussing the original OP now? Thanks.

Yeah of course I don’t, I must be highly uneducated because “ Waterlilysunset “
doesn’t like the wording I have used, on my own post.

It’s a “ gender scan “, therefore I will call it gender. Why on earth are you all getting so upitty about terminology?

Do you really think I woke up this morning and decided to post on Netmums to get a mouthful of abuse from several people telling me I’m wrong because theres “ hundreds of genders “.

We’re talking about a BABY, whom is either going to be male or female.

?? I don’t see anyone abusing you. Just some querying the subject and an argument over sex vs gender. That’s not a personal attack.

Kriszoee · 12/03/2025 12:49

Jesus Christ, god forbid I’ve posted on multiple forums and gotten the names SLIGHTLY muddled up.

It doesn’t matter “ what they mean “, and not sure why it’s been turned into a massive issue.

My baby is a male or female, full stop. That is what they will be born as - not a microwave, or a fridge freezer or any of these other “ genders “.

You are all taking this way too far.

Yes, a bit of a derail I suppose, but calling it abuse is absolutely ridiculous.

No - I’ll tell you what is absolutely ridiculous.

The sheer amount of people that have through it was even slightly acceptable to target my post and comment the same crap over and over again.

I have far more to worry about than some wording on an online forum.

PurBal · 12/03/2025 12:57

My understanding is that the earlier the gestation the more like the genitals are not clear or developed enough to determine boy or girl. I appreciate you are anxious but the outcome won't change whether you get confirmation on genitals now or on Monday. And even then there is room for error. Wishing you all the best for the scan and that the anomaly scan shows the baby is healthy.

nonmerci99 · 12/03/2025 12:57

i think you’re taking this far too personally. I see no one attacking you, let alone abusing you. No one is targeting you, some people just commented as they are feminists who don’t like the conflation of sex and gender.

In any event, you’re unlikely to get the answer you’re hoping for until the anatomy scan. Fingers crossed it is a girl as it sounds like you’ve bought lots of “girl” things you wouldn’t want to use for a boy!

Cattery · 12/03/2025 12:59

Missiopi · 12/03/2025 12:34

It should be though.

Gender apparently doesn't coexist with what genitals people have anymore. Its a social construction and nothing to do with biology

So i absolutly would tell people the SEX of my baby and say I was going to a scan to find out the sex of my baby.

Gender took over, as a descriptor, in popularity years before the trans movement as people found it more comfortable to say gender instead of sex. Back then people conflated the 2 as one but now activists have made a clear separation and it's important to distinguish.

I dont believe in gender but apparently theres over a hundred of them so if you want to know your baby's gender then you might want to wait until its old enough to tell you and use gender neutral pronouns until then.

Or you could ask about its sex.

Also 'potty shot' is gross.

Edited

Stop it. That isn’t what this thread is about and you know it. The poster is asking a legitimate question. The thread isn’t an opportunity for you to show us all how “woke” you are. Have a day off

TallulahBetty · 12/03/2025 13:00

It's not 'abuse' to correct you over scientific terminology, nor to state that a term 'potty shot' is gross and American. Grow up, OP - you're about to be someone's mum.

Nope, this is sex not gender. They are called 'gender scans' in error. 10000% sex. I can only assume that 'potty shot' is another hideous Americanism.

I've never heard of potty shot either. Also, it's definitely sex.

I’m done with this.

I should not be sat here so upset, feeling so deflated and already like I’m “ doing wrong “ because of some online trolls.

disgusting.

Goodness me, okay, I think OP gets it!

OP, I'm not sure on the scan, i had boys and was in no doubt due to some pretty obvious anatomy! I hope your 20 week scan gives you some more clarity.

Honestly, this would never usually bother me - I am a prison officer after all.

However the sheer amount of notifications all telling me how wrong I am and jumping right down my throat over something that literally does not matter, has really upset and overwhelmed me.

Then to be told that I need to “ grow up “ as I’m “ about to be someone’s mum “ makes me feel like a complete failure already.

Im sorry I even bothered to post and ask🤦‍♀️ I’ve had nothing but support on other forums, so this has just been a horribly upsetting experience x

A world where men can say they’re women by using ‘gender’ and think they’re entitled to enter women’s safe spaces and sports….. yes, the world sure has gone mad!

And what has this got to do with my unborn baby, specifically?

None of this is relevant nor necessary.
