Confusing Potty Shot

Hi all. I’m currently 18+5 and had a gender scan at exactly 15 weeks. I was told that the baby is a girl, and without second thought spent a fortune preparing for a girl.

I’m now so worried that it’s actually a boy? Can someone please bring me back to reality. I suffer with ridiculous anxiety and have spent the last 3 hours staring at this potty shot.

I have my 20 week scan on Monday, but I just need some reassurance or opinions for now!

I can confirm 100% it's a girl.

thank you so much for your comment, and for being kind x

Oh honestly.
@Kriszoee try to just focus on the actual answers to your question and not let the others upset you. Fwiw I've heard of the term 'potty shot', purely from here on Mumsnet. 😊In answer to your question, I'm having a boy and it was clear as day on the private gender scan we went to. It was confirmed at the 20 week scan. I cant see anything that would indicate a boy on your scan photos. As mentioned by someone else, the sonographer would have seen from all different angles, so its likely they're right. All the best for Monday and hope your little one looks happy and healthy. 😊

changedusernameforthis1 · 12/03/2025 13:18

Jesus. It looks like the worst of Mumsnet haven't been fed recently.

Sorry you've had this on your post, OP. Easier said than done but try to pay them no mind. And congrats on your pregnancy!

I'd hazard a guess at a little girl, but hopefully the 20 week scan will be able to clear it up for you. If you really want to know for sure though there are some places that will tell you the gender (or sex, before my head gets bitten off too) with a blood test.

Thank you for the kind words, I really appreciate that.

Im glad someone else has heard of the term. It absolutely is a widely used term across these forums. Everyone knew exactly what I was referring to, so I’m not sure why they’ve turned it into a big problem!

Thats really reassuring to hear. I have had really bad anxiety for years, and it makes me overthink for virtually no reason, so remembering that they had a live, moving image is really helpful!

thank you a lot x

And what has this got to do with my unborn baby, specifically?

None of this is relevant nor necessary.

Because words and biology matter. Gender and sex are now very different things and if you want to protect your child in the future from an ideology that can damage her/him both emotionally and physically, it’s best to use the correct terminology.

Anyway, your baby looks like a girl. If your baby is a boy, he won’t care what he’s dressed in or what colour his room is or whatever you have done to prepare for a girl. All the best.

Tell me about it😳

That was completely overwhelming. The constant abundance of notifications, the post freezing, losing the comments that were helpful in a crowd of negativity and then told to “ grow up “, for pointing out how I was made to feel as I’m “ about to be someone’s mum “, what a nasty comment to make!

Thank you! It’s been really difficult, I have had such severe HG since 7 weeks, so really suffering but it’ll all be worth it in the end!

I have no reason to believe the sonographer was wrong & two out of three of the shots are clearly female but this one in particular just threw me off so I wanted to see if anyone else had similar, but apparently I shouldn’t have bothered!!😂

Only 5 days to go!😊

I booked a scan last week and the name of the scan on the website was "gender determination". People need to seriously leave OP alone for using common language.

Both words have been synonymous for years until the trans stuff came along.

changedusernameforthis1 · 12/03/2025 13:27

Oh no I'm so sorry! I had HG really bad with my last pregnancy. If you haven't already heard of them, the PSS (pregnancy sickness support) charity were amazingly helpful and supportive 💐

Whilst yes in an outside world they absolutely do matter, i really didn’t think this would be such an issue regarding what’s in between an unborn little persons legs. I have posted to several forums previously and had nothing but support. Not one person had pointed terminology out once, and everyone uses the same words.

I have been both physically & mentally exhausted, as well as violently sick every single day for the past 12 weeks, I didn’t come on here this morning thinking long and hard about the words that I had used, all I am focused on is trying to be as well as possible. I really did not realise that the words that I used would cause such a riff as we were talking about an unborn little baby who ( whether people agree with it or not ), will be born either a male or female.

thank you!

100%, mine was titled “ Gender Scan “, too. I am really shocked at how this has been twisted, especially in regards to the parts between an unborn little persons legs.

my mind is baffled at the fact that people want to put transgender and baby in the same sentence.

I have nothing against it, one of my close friends is male but identifies as female, however my child will be born male or female and therefore will be referred to as such whether these people like it or not!😊

The only guarantee your baby is a boy or a girl is when they are born. You can get more accurate scans the further along you are and there is a high chance that being told you are having a girl that you are having a girl. There’s always the chance they could be a boy until they’re born and you know for sure.

Options are: don’t buy loads of stuff until they are here. Return the girl stuff you’ve bought and exchange for neutral stuff, then stick to neutral stuff. Risk the small chance it’s not a girl but keep buying girl stuff and just accept you’ll have a boy in pink but actually that doesn’t matter because boys can wear pink.

The point you are trying to make that your baby will be male or female is the exact same point that others calling it sex not gender are making. They are saying there are two sexes: male and female. Which you agree with. Gender has been used because we didn’t like saying sex. Gender is more around what is expected of male/female - women can work skirts but men can’t, women can’t play football etc. The rise of people feeling like they don’t fit in their gender because perhaps they like things that typically of the opposite sex. The people arguing that it’s sex not gender are saying that there are male and female but typical gender norms harms people and has created these problems around gender and you saying that people can be microwaves and fridge freezers. You’re actually saying the same things as those posters.

It's not 'abuse' to correct you over scientific terminology, nor to state that a term 'potty shot' is gross and American. Grow up, OP - you're about to be someone's mum.

It is British, not American. It’s one of our grosser terms imo and one that I am glad I do not hear anymore now that I live in the States.

Dolambslikemintsauce · 12/03/2025 13:41

Op don't worry about the world's madness.. Before long announcing a birth will be either the declaration of having a vulva owner or a penis owner.... And not even saying boy or girl never mind sex /gender..
Congratulations it looks like a girl to me.

Elz1406 · 12/03/2025 13:42

I'm sure you'll get clarity at your 20 week scan and hope it shows a happy healthy bean! It's so hard not to be anxious but try not to worry too much about the stuff you've already bought - they wear it for such a short time anyway you'll be selling it in vinted before you know it and getting the next lot of stuff!

We've got a little boy and he has a mixture of neutral stuff and slightly more traditionally "boyish" things and tbh if our next one is a girl (currently 19 weeks) we're likely going to stick her in his old newborn stuff anyway. I can't remember if you said this is your first but if so, trust me, the baby won't care and it all gets pooped and sicked on in the end!

I do worry a bit about the private gender scans, mainly because of the risk that something worrying comes up, unrelated to the gender, that the scanner isn't qualified to explain or investigate. I think that could cause a lot of anxiety. It's good to know that at your 20 week scan you've got a fully qualified NHS sonographer to take you through everything. I'm sorry you've ended up feeling anxious from the uncertainty.

Best of luck on your scan and hope you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy. Xxx

OP please don't have a 'sex party' to reveal if you are having a boy or girl, you could end up with some peculiar and probably inappropriate gifts 😂

Have yourself a gender reveal and call it what the hell you want! Maybe a genital reveal? 😂

Genitals are still developing at this stage, and subtle differences between male and female genitalia might not be easily visible, I think 15 weeks may be a little too early for a definite, I would wait until your 20 week scan.

Congratulations and never mind the PC brigade, they have nothing better to do.

People are absolutely insane. It's a gender scan ffs, to find out the GENDER of the baby. I'm so confused with the people with a stick up their arse insisting it's the sex? Technically, you can say either, no? Does it really matter?? People are insane, absolutely mental.

Anyway OP, looks like a girl to me. My scan at 14 weeks was very clearly a boy, you could see his little willy and balls and now he's born he's definitely a boy too 🤣

@TallulahBetty why on earth has this bothered you so much? You’re on Netmums, terminology is not important. Both of those terms quite literally, mean the exact same thing.

if you take yourself through the multitude of posts, you’ll see they are ALL titled “ Potty Shot “.

Mumsnet are full of people with this view. It takes a brave woman to use the word "gender" on Mumsnet 😂
