Confusing Potty Shot

Hi all. I’m currently 18+5 and had a gender scan at exactly 15 weeks. I was told that the baby is a girl, and without second thought spent a fortune preparing for a girl.

I’m now so worried that it’s actually a boy? Can someone please bring me back to reality. I suffer with ridiculous anxiety and have spent the last 3 hours staring at this potty shot.

I have my 20 week scan on Monday, but I just need some reassurance or opinions for now!

Just to reassure you, if the baby does turn out to be a boy, they can wear pink and flowers without any long term consequences to their health or well being.

Nobody has said they can’t.

i am just simply saying that I personally would not dress my first and only child in dresses, bows and outfits branded with the name “ Hannah “, should it actually end up being a boy.

there’s nothing wrong with that.

I can confirm 100% it's a girl.

No you can't. Not even sonographers can.

I can’t tell if it’s a boy or girl but sorry. As someone who is also pregnant and looks at the pregnancy thread frequently , I have seen the term “potty shot “ many many times. I’m sure the op isn’t going around using the term frequently in real life, nor is anyone else. I’ve never seen a thread derail in such a ridiculous manner as this one.

Redredwiner · 12/03/2025 15:14

To be fair OP most of the comments you don't like are a bit tongue in cheek or sardonic, or just simply informing you that babies are either boys or girls - that is their sex (even though it has become known as gender). The concept of gender is about expecting the two sexes to act, prefer and identify with certain stereotypical male or female things.

You clearly align closely with very traditional gendered ideas about the sexes. That's fine! A lot of posters here don't. Which is also fine. Because when your DC is older they may show preferences you wouldn't necessarily expect or wish them to... My ds always wanted pink glittery shoes, it's just what he liked. At an age when he had no concept of gender or sex for that matter. If I had been dead set on him liking dinosaurs, because that's what I'd always bought him, I'd have been disappointed. So it's fine to dress your dd (fingers crossed!) in female gendered clothing, as long as you're ready to let her preferences come out as she grows up.

Best of luck. And I don't mean this to sound unkind, but your post was always going to attract comments you didn't like and if you aren't feeling robust then netmums would probably have been a better place to post. (The potty shot didn't help- I saw it and cringed so imagine lots of posters did too)

Redredwiner · 12/03/2025 15:16

And @eqpi4t2hbsnktd post was almost surely one such sardonic post, not genuinely meaning it at all!

Jk987 · 12/03/2025 15:18

You can get a NIPT blood test and it will tell for sure whether it's a girl or boy.

ManyATrueWord · 12/03/2025 15:19

Isn't Netmums a completely different website?

It's not 'abuse' to correct you over scientific terminology, nor to state that a term 'potty shot' is gross and American. Grow up, OP - you're about to be someone's mum.

Nasty and rude way to get your point across here . Perhaps you should take your own advice.

No, it’s ridiculous & has nothing to do with what’s between the legs of my baby.

It’s a girl. I’ve had my gender scan at 14-16 weeks with all of mine and a boy looks much different. Google images should have some examples. Not sure why people aren’t understanding the term “potty shot” either unless it’s deliberate faux incredulity. It may not be the most couth but it refers to the angle of the image and every sonographer I’ve had has used it.

Thanks a lot for your comment! Makes me feel relaxed lol!😊

Totally agree with that, I’m not in any way saying that it’s a “ nice “ term which is what most of these people have made out, but it definitely is a well known one, and what this angle is referred to.. there’s 0 denying that.

The hand me downs weren’t anything to do with money. It was a practical choice because babies don’t care as long as they are comfortable and there’s no point sending stuff to landfill when it’s been used for such a short period of time. They were so much softer and snugglier than new. (I blew money on a brand new sports car a month after she was born - in cash - instead. 😘)

My point is that the scan is about determining baby’s biological sex. There is no difference in practical terms between a baby boy and a baby girl. You might choose to apply gender stereotypes to the sexes despite them being shown to be harmful and limiting of both sexes.

Using the word gender because sex is seen as icky (see gender scans and gender reveals) doesn’t change the meaning of the words, and it also has impact in the world. If you don’t care about the difference now, you’ll probably care less if your daughter decides she wants a hysterectomy and breast removal at 18 because “gender”.

Some of us care about the opportunities our daughters will have in their lives and don’t want to restrict them. “Girls can’t do maths”, “doctors are male and nurses are female”, “a girl that climbs trees is a boy” all start with pink frilly dresses and hair bows. If you’re cool with that, crack on. But maybe don’t share it on a global internet site where you are going to get comments from people with a bit more experience of these things.

It’s a “ gender scan “, therefore I will call it gender. Why on earth are you all getting so upitty about terminology?

Do you really think I woke up this morning and decided to post on Netmums to get a mouthful of abuse from several people telling me I’m wrong because theres “ hundreds of genders “.

We’re talking about a BABY, whom is either going to be male or female.

We aren’t on netmums. Does it even exist anymore ? Agree with everyone else. “Potty shot” ugh. I’ve never heard that, ghastly. Plus it’s sex.

Yep!! I’m beginning to wonder if people are just saying this to “ jump on the bandwagon “ as it’s a very well known, well used term on these online forums.

Does that mean it’s considered normal to share images of your unborn child’s genitalia with the world?!

Oh here we go, first you bring “ gender stereotyping “ into it and now you’re bringing in sexual exploitation and pedophilia. You do realise that thousands and thousands of people share their GENDER SCAN images?

If you feel the need to try and sexualise an unborn child’s genitalia, you are the problem.

You really, really need to stop now. You sound absolutely moronic.
