Does anyone feel like they spend all trying to get their little one to sleep? My great napper has now decided he doesn't sleep more than 30mins in the day.

We wake up and play first thing then after that it's just a cycle of him yawning, me getting him down, him waking up, putting him on the boob, him yawning again etc. I feel like we don't get chance to play more than once a day cause he's just fighting sleep 😞 not that he really interacts with the playing anyway but I feel bad. And he hates tummy time. Just lays there like a potato. So I just feel guilty all the time!

SamanthaVimes · 12/09/2022 15:27

@KizboBaggins we’re similar in terms of playing here. I try to make sure I’m talking as much as I can when he’s awake but we aren’t playing (eg when doing a nappy change) as it’s all interaction for them.

Proper playing where I’m reading a book or waving a rattle in his face is only a few minutes each day, he’s either asleep, feeding or being changed/washed the rest of the time. To be honest I’m not sure he’s that interested in playing but it helps pass some time before the next job πŸ˜…

KizboBaggins · 12/09/2022 16:55

@SamanthaVimes ah thanks, I'm glad it's not just me! I desperately want to start reading to him. It's hard because he's never really just settled like in my arms... he chills when he's thrown over my shoulder and I walk around, but that's about it πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ

I'm doing the talking thing too, as much as possible. Every time I talk to the baby my dog thinks I'm speaking to him instead, and when a labrador thinks you're talking to them they think they're getting treats. So the whole day is just one big disappointment for the dog πŸ˜‚

ChinChilly · 12/09/2022 17:41

@KizboBaggins @SamanthaVimes I feel exactly the same sometimes I don’t feel like I’m doing enough with her. I feel like there isn’t time between the feeds, winding, naps. My LO isn’t keen on tummy time on a mat but will happily do it and keep her head up for ages on my chest or in her sling/carrier thing. I try to talk to her as much as possible, when I was a nursery nurse you could really tell the difference between the children that were talked to at home more.
@KizboBaggins omg my Labrador is exactly the same whenever I talk to her he thinks I’m talking to him and comes over all excited, if I walk into the kitchen he just stares at his treat cupboard, these dogs are too smart πŸ˜‚

Lianna93 · 12/09/2022 19:08

@KizboBaggins If my little one isn't on me, she isn't napping πŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒ
I love the cuddles but it's so nice when I'm able to get a wee break πŸ˜‚
Dh & I have started reversing the roles on his days off, so he'll take her for the entire day & I'll potter about the house. My only interaction with her is when she needs feeding & honestly, it's been great for all of us. Means she can get in much needed bonding time with DH & I feel like I'm doing something productive (I know in reality, taking care of my baby all day is productive but it's a different kind πŸ˜‚)

SamanthaVimes · 12/09/2022 19:37

@KizboBaggins mine is grizzling right now because he wants to be on my shoulder being walked around. He definitely thinks a cuddle on the sofa is vastly inferior!

KizboBaggins · 12/09/2022 20:43

@SamanthaVimes same! He decided the perfect time for a wander round on the shoulder was just as we'd sat down to eat πŸ™„

@ChinChilly that's really interesting that you could tell the difference with the kids - and good to know that it's worth doing! I'm trying not to get into the habit of doing baby talk to him either. So sometimes I'm having like legit adult conversations with myself... pretty sure I used the word "pervasive" in a monologue directed at him earlier πŸ˜…

@Lianna93 that's a good idea! I think a break is important sometimes. I actually feel guilty about NOT feeling guilty when I go out and walk the dog alone, if that's makes sense πŸ˜‚

Has anyone started doing baby classes?
I've got baby massage on Thursday & thinking of joining other groups too. Been attending my local breastfeeding group as well which has been great.

I've been to a stay and play at my church but apart from that no - second time round I'm not paying for loads of classes until he is old enough to stay awake for them πŸ˜‚ saying that, I did baby massage with my first from 12 weeks and she loved it - definitely recommend that one.

In other news, anyone else got a thumb sucker?? I put him down in his Moses basket at 7pm last night as he was getting grouchy and he popped his thumb in and went to sleep! I was so shocked, he's had a dummy but showed no signs of the thumb up to this point!

KizboBaggins · 13/09/2022 10:11

@Lianna93 I'm starting stay and play on Friday and we're on the waiting list for baby massage - can't get a place until November. We're lucky it's all free at our local family hub which is nice.

I'm worried he's too young for stay and play tbh. He does not care for his toys yet. But I spose it'll be nice to meet some other mums at least

@kiwi17 no thumb sucking over here yet! He's just discovering his hands and occasionally sticks them in his mouth. Sounds great if he fell straight asleep though lol.

SamanthaVimes · 13/09/2022 10:26

I haven’t drive any classes just for baby yet (although he has tagged along to forest school with my toddler) I’ll probably try to find something for him to go to after Christmas when his naps will be more predictable. Until then I might pop in to bounce and rhyme at the library every now and then but that’s probably it.

Lianna93 · 13/09/2022 11:46

@KizboBaggins ours are all free too which is fantastic.
I'm really looking forward to baby massage but she's due her jags the day before, so I'm worried she'll be uncomfortable & grouchy 😬

@kiwi17 No thumb sucking here either but she does love sucking on her first & will cry when she 'loses' it πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Doesn't put her to sleep though, so it's a playful thing rather than a comfort which is nice!

OP posts:
ChinChilly · 13/09/2022 12:18

@KizboBaggins Definitely worth it, even just chatting them through what ever you’re doing day to day.

@kiwi17 no thumb sucking here just full fists in mouth

I haven’t joined any groups either, may have a look after Christmas when she’s abit bigger and will get something out of it. She’s quite lazy so will probs sleep through a class atm πŸ˜‚

annie1994 · 13/09/2022 13:36

@Lianna93 we’ve got to a stay and play group but that was more for my toddler, George just slept most of it but he did seem to like the nursery rhymes at the end. I was quite glad he slept as it meant I could keep an eye on my crazy toddler 🀣

@kiwi17 nah he doesn’t thumb suck but he is starting to eat his hands, I believe it’s a good sign that they’ve realised they have hands and are in control of them!!

NamelessBaby1 · 13/09/2022 13:58

I've also just been going to groups for 'myself" so far rather then anything for the baby as such lol, like a breastfeeding drop in and pram & buggy walking group. I'm really lucky to have a baby & toddler centre nearby which runs a whole range of things as well as has play areas and a very cheap cafe!
Going to wait another month or so I think before going to anything else as she is really still too wee to get any enjoyment out of stuff yet though.

Also got a full fist sooker here lol.

kiwi17 · 13/09/2022 14:05

Interesting! I wonder if he'll keep doing it or not. Got a sad boy today after his 8 week jabs :( at least I managed to get all the Calpol in with the second dose 🀣

CaptainCarp · 14/09/2022 09:22

Hi all, lots of posts to read through!
@Lianna93 I hope you are feeling better, babies are hard work, we are here for you.

I've been to a breastfeeding group (hoping to go again this week) but not been to any others. Tempted to go to baby sensory as she's just started being interested in her play mat arch.

@kiwi17 well done on getting the calpol in! I'm hoping I'll be able to for the next meningitis jab.

We've been on holiday for a week, cam back Monday, which was great. Baby slept in the car for the journeys & was pretty good. It did help that Nana & grandad were there, even just giving my arms a rest πŸ˜‚

Baby has decided to become a fussy boob monster for the last 2 nights. Feeds for ages at night & won't sleep in the next to me, has to be near boob in the bed!
She's 11 weeks so possibly a growth spurt...
It's lucky she's so cute lol

KizboBaggins · 14/09/2022 14:29

Did anyone else's little one sleep loads after their jabs? Going on 2.5hrs now bless him.

Absolutely traumatic seeing him get them, I felt awful 😭

KizboBaggins · 14/09/2022 15:32

Good lord he's awake and he's screaming 😭 please send positive thoughts for my sanity tonight πŸ˜…

missv556 · 14/09/2022 15:35

@KizboBaggins yeah mine spent a large part of Monday asleep after his, can make them sleepy. Its horrific seeing them get jabbed isn't it? Made me get quite emotional and teary to see my boy scream out in pain but he was right as rain again after like 5 seconds. Worse for us I think than it is for them

ChinChilly · 14/09/2022 15:46

@KizboBaggins good luck lovely, I’m sure he’ll be fine by tonight!

We were meant to be having her jabs on Monday but they called yesterday and rearranged them for the following Monday she’ll be nearly 10 weeks by then πŸ™„ not looking forward to them either, I’m glad I never saw them putting cannulas in her little feet when she was in NICU ☹️

KizboBaggins · 14/09/2022 15:55

Oh god @ChinChilly I can't even imagine that in the NICU πŸ˜” I wonder if they'll push back her 12 week jabs if the 8 week ones are late? Don't know if it works like that tbh but I'm sure you probably just want them out the way now!

you're right @missv556 it's awful seeing them in pain - I'd do anything to take it away for him!

He was awake for 20mins, screaming his little head off. I've managed to get some more Calpol in him and he's back asleep again thankfully.

missv556 · 14/09/2022 16:06

@KizboBaggins same thing with mine, he slept once we got home and then woke up and screamed for what felt like eternity then went back to sleep after the 2nd dose of calpol kicked in I guess. Then he was fine the rest of the day and slept as normal overnight too.

@ChinChilly ah thats so annoying they've been postponed. Sure it must be an anxious wait for you and it sucks its been prolonged. Very unfortunate timing

ChinChilly · 14/09/2022 16:06

@KizboBaggins Having a baby in NICU is just a surreal experience, I wonder how the lady that was on here who also had a baby Amelia in NICU is getting on. I did wonder that about her jabs I kinda hope so otherwise she’s gonna have a rough couple of weeks πŸ₯΄ glad your little one went back off, best for them to sleep it off

ChinChilly · 14/09/2022 16:07

@missv556 It is annoying, I expected it as soon as the queens funeral was announced, I expect nothing more from my GP surgery anyway they’re shockingly shit!
