Twin pregnancy

Hello!

I have noticed on quite a few of the threads I've been reading that the odd person will comment they are pregnant with twins, but I can't see a current twins thread.

I'm almost 28 weeks with dcda twins. Have a nearly 2 year old as well. Have so far found the pregnancy pretty straightforward but the aches and pains and tiredness are starting to hit me now. And I feel like I am getting quite large! Although I think relatively given there are 2 in there I'm probably not that big really.

Anyone at a similar stage and want to compare notes over the coming weeks?

Thank you @Donimo for the tip about classes on the twins trust website, I'll check that out.
@quinnbaby I wasnt aware a next2me wasnt big enough for 2 babies. That's exactly what I was planning on doing 🤦‍♀️
@Katjolo we have a Ford smax and can fit 3 car seats in the back. There's another 2 seats at the back but not wouldn't be able to put isofix seats there (and they would ne hard to access anyway)

Is anyone else getting annoying negative comments, such as you'll have your hands full, they will be hard work, you're so brave, I couldn't do it etc etc
I wish people would think before they speak, what's the point of such comments anyway?

quinnbaby · 03/05/2022 21:45

@Betseyrov thats what lots of my reading said online that it is no big enough for co sleeping but I think there is a slightly bigger version!

We haven’t told many people yet so luckily those that we have told have been very supportive close family but bracing myself for the twin comments!

Love how many twin mamas to be there are out there!

itstrue · 03/05/2022 21:50

Congratulations everyone! My MCMA twins are 14 now. Twins are an experience that you are so lucky to get however it might not seem like it at times!

SurpriseSurprise · 03/05/2022 22:07

I’ve just found out that I’m pregnant with twins, 9 weeks 3 days. I’d suffered a miscarriage 3 years ago and it’s taken me this long to fall pregnant again that I’ve been on tenderhooks. So I booked a private scan and it’s twins

Ive got my 12 week scan on the 23rd, so hopefully I might find out more then. When did all you lovely ladies find out what type of twins you’re having? The private scan place were all a bit vague

quinnbaby · 03/05/2022 22:10

@SurpriseSurprise exciting we are less than one week apart!
we found out at a private scan too and he just said congratulations you are having 2 babies! Looking forward to finding out more hopefully at 12 week scan - I don’t have a date for it yet.

it’s so exciting isn’t it!

I think my doctors surgery midwife panicked when I told her it was a twin pregnancy and fired through a really quick referral. It was the same one who I saw during my miscarriage in January 2020, so she glanced at my notes, saw nothing had happened for us since then and took pity I think. I wasn’t expecting to get a date so soon. My local NHS is awful for correspondence

The poor lady who did my scan went quiet and left the room. I panicked in case there was something wrong but the supervisor came in and confirmed the twins. It was the first time the original lady had seen twins and wanted to be sure before she broke the happy news.

doingitforthegirls · 04/05/2022 05:23

I used a next2me with them both in for a good couple of months - mainly during the day to nap - my twins were pretty small though.

I had a silver cross double decker one - great for fitting through door ways but it is heavy. Only lasted around 12 months with it before getting a joie side by side lightweight pushchair (it's a bugger to get through doors though)

Donimo · 04/05/2022 06:49

@LuckyTigress that's rubbish with the sickness returning. Are you all ready for them arriving now? I did a twin antenatal course the other week and they advised to have a hospital bag packed from 28 weeks with twins (but I can't bring myself to do that at all!)

@Katjolo I have a skoda karoq and 3 children seats was very difficult, tried lots of options for the seat for my 3 year old and it's a very tight squeeze. My husband is going to get either a ford s max or Peugeot 5008 (he is test driving both on the weekend)

@Betseyrov the comments are annoying but tend to ignore them really. What does annoy me is the health professionals keep telling me how complicated and high risk my pregnancy is. Due to my obstetric history I have a lot of preexisting risks as well as being a MCDA pregnancy. I really don't need them to increase my anxiety!

I think (but could be wrong) the issues with sleeping both in a next to me crib is that there is no research to prove its safe. There has been a study to show sleeping both in a cot is safe but not looked at a next to me. During my antenatal course this was discussed and the concerns were because its smaller is there enough ventilation to prevent a baby over heating. I plan to see how big my twins are and see what the ventilation etc is like. And either sleep them in 1 or 2 next to me.

@SurpriseSurprise congratulations. I remember that panic when I had my early scan at 7 weeks the nurse had a panicked look before saying she can see 2 healthy heartbeats! I found out the type of twin pregnancy at this time. But my twins are a result of ivf and I only had 1 embryo transfered so they had to be identical. This was confirmed in more detail at my NHS 12 week scan

doingitforthegirls · 04/05/2022 08:17

@Donimo
I would agree in having bag ready from 28 weeks - I had massive bleeds from 28 weeks onwards and was in and out of hospital almost weekly for overnight stays - managed to keep them in until 34 weeks though

I moved my 4 year old into a slimline graco and can get all 3 of them in the back of a c max - twins in isofix either side. You do need to shop around for the narrowest car seats on the market though

Just on sleeping them separate....Mine hated being apart in the early weeks - they shared an incubator in NICU - they absolutely wouldn't have slept in separate Moses/cribs etc - it was only when they started to move about a bit and annoy each other that I stopped the next2me sharing 😂

I'm tempted to do another ivf transfer of a single embryo but am worried in case it splits and I have twins again - medically I've been told no more multiples but I'd love more twins if I could have them x

LuckyTigress · 04/05/2022 09:16

@Donimo I have been packed since 28 weeks but I was under the care of fetal medicine as one of my twins was measuring very small and I was told to get ready to deliver anyday. Thankfully they are still in and have caught up in weights!

I found out they were twins and the type of twins at my 12 week scan. We were told the sex at 16 weeks too.

I also did a Twins Trust antenatal class and found it really useful x

applecrumbler · 04/05/2022 11:08

Ah this is so lovely - I knew there were quite a few twins due around the various boards. Hopefully a few more find us here too :-)

Sleeping - I've bought another one of the same cot I have for ds which can convert to a cot bed. Hoping that it will work as a next to me with the side off but haven't tried it yet, if not will just have it as a cot next to the bed with the side on. Figured that way I can promote ds to a toddler bed when the twins are ready for a cot each, and have 2 x matching cots for them going forwards. Have also bought another Moses basket and stand as this was what we used for ds in the early days.

Car seats we are looking at isofix extender bars but watch this space as to whether that works out or not! It's a lot to consider but figure we can at least get home from hospital as we are with 2 seats installed and then sort the rest as and when we need.

Anyone else not finding out the sex? I'm still in 2 minds as would be good to plan names but so far have said I don't want to know. I think it's 2 more boys though 😬🥴

Also... just got my elcs date, I've been booked in for exactly 37 weeks, 9 weeks today. 🙌

OP posts:
Betseyrov · 04/05/2022 12:54

Wow it's getting real now @applecrumbler those 9 weeks will go by very quickly I bet. I'm planning a vaginal birth (if babies behave) and was told they wouldn't let me go over 38 weeks so I'm already halfway through my pregnancy at 19 weeks 🤗
If it was just one baby, I would have kept it a surprise. But seeing there's 2, I feel like I need to be more organised, sort out their clothes etc, so we will find out the sex.

@SurpriseSurprise congratulations! I found out I was having twins and which type at 6 weeks at my epu. I had to go in due to spotting.

@Donimo I felt the same when I first saw my consultant, he said I was high risk for everything basically 🙄

I have a sore bump today, on the sides, kind of feel like my abs are hurting although I didn't do any exercise.

applecrumbler · 04/05/2022 13:46

@Betseyrov - great to have made it to the halfway point! Psychologically I think it's so nice to be on the home stretch, whichever stretch that is. I was less impatient with first pregnancy but I think it's because of the twins factor and being worried about just how uncomfortable things might get that I am wishing the weeks away this time. Also so I can stop working!!!

I am slightly tempted to find out sex for the reasons you mention but because we didn't find out last time all my newborn stuff is neutral anyway, then obviously I have a whole boys wardrobe for 3 months onwards. So I'm gonna get some tiny baby stuff in plain white or white and grey etc and then just wait and see!

@LuckyTigress since I think you've made it nearly to the end and are the furthest along - just how uncomfortable are you at this point?! Hoping you're going to say that it's not too bad!

OP posts:
LuckyTigress · 04/05/2022 14:50

@applecrumbler 9 weeks, how exciting OP! It will fly by!

I am actually not as uncomfortable as I thought I would be but this is my first pregnancy so I have nothing to compare it to. Sleep and back pain has been difficult over the past 2 weeks but I am still able to drive and do the washing etc. The need to wee every 2 hours also isn’t fun and things just take me twice as long but I have (finally!) learnt to listen to my body. I’m currently feet up with a massive bowl of crisps watching Netflix so it’s not all bad! 😂

Donimo · 04/05/2022 18:00

@doingitforthegirls the chance of a single embryo splitting with IVF is about 1% apparently... so not likely (but then happened to us!)

@LuckyTigress definitely make the most of this week.

@applecrumbler I found out tje sex with this pregnancy but not my first as I'd had enough surprises. Also I didn't want to find out by accident at one of my many scans, especially if my husband wasn't there. I work part time and now counting down the days left, 14 days!! (35 weeks) When are you giving up work?

I had a consultant review and scan today and all is good. The girls are measuring within an ounce of each other. We discussed my birth plan further too, which is making it all seem more real! Think I need to pack that hospital bag!

Does anyone know what weight gain we should have during a twin pregnancy? I did briefly Google it but seemed like a lot of weight gain 1.5-2 lb per week! I was weighed today and I have put on 7kg ( currently 28 weeks).

applecrumbler · 04/05/2022 18:28

@Donimo also counting the days but I work full time so it's still depressingly rather too many!

Re weight gain - I think Google says more than really needed but I've put on more like 10-11 also at 28 weeks. Was about 60 to begin with and now about 70, if you were less to begin than percentage wise maybe that's similar? I'm fairly tall but was quite slim going into this pregnancy. My app (Ovia) has me tracking way below goal weight but I'm secretly quite relieved about that!

I'm also not finding out. Excited to see what the day brings. 🤣🤣🤣

Also looked at the 5008 and smax. Not many used cars about at the moment. New cars also delayed. 🙉

doingitforthegirls · 04/05/2022 21:37

Looking at my fit bit data i was about 12.6 stone just before I had my twins at 34 weeks
2 weeks after the birth I was 10.8 stone (I was 10.5 just before IVF transfer) - so just under 2 stone I put on. My twins were 7lb and 4lb rough birth weights

I didn't diet or watch my weight or anything during pregnancy - I 100% ate for 3 😂 - figured it would be the only chance I'd get to (over) indulge

One year later I'm now 9.10 stone which is the correct bmi / weight for my height apparently - again eating rubbish as need the sugar hit to keep up with the twins, my eldest and work

SurpriseSurprise · 05/05/2022 05:00

I really wish I knew what type of twin I was having, but the private scan lady didn’t seem very clued up. I guess if I hadn’t had that I wouldn’t know I was having twins but as I do I want to know everything!!!!!

I’m still being over cautious and trying to pretend it isn’t happening, I had a miscarriage at 14 weeks in 2020 so that’s playing on my mind. We had just started to tell people when it happened so I’m reluctant to tell anyone this time until a lot later, but with it being twins I’m guessing it will be obvious earlier on.

All exciting but also scary. I’m so excited for you guys who have the end in the sight!

Betseyrov · 05/05/2022 07:12

@SurpriseSurprise I'm so sorry for your loss. I understand you're wary of telling people. I'm sure it will all be fine 🥰

Did the sonographer tell you if there was one or two sacs? When is your 12 week scan? If you find the wait too long, could you book another private scan? I had a two private scans before my 12 week nhs one. One with window to the womb, and the other with ultrasound direct. Both sonographer knew what type of twins I was having, without me having to tell them.

@doingitforthegirls it's great to hear you've lost all of the baby weight. I am being very careful with what I eat, and eat only healthy food because otherwise I put on weight very easily, pregnant or not, but when pregnant it's worse. I'm 19 weeks and put on 5 kilos already 😱

applecrumbler · 05/05/2022 08:47

@Betseyrov I don't think 5kgs at 19 weeks is much at all! I had put on 6-7 kg at that point and was worried that I wasn't gaining enough rather than too much. People are also telling me I look really small still although maybe just being nice. Also no one has said that for a few weeks thinking about it 😂

OP posts:
applecrumbler · 05/05/2022 08:49

I am eating complete crap around mostly really healthy actual meals. It's just what I feel like. Just finished my daily super sugary almond croissant and full fat latte and when I went to pick up more gaviscon I picked up an orange twirl and some fruity mentos which I've already cracked open 🙈

Hi all. Jumping in here too. 25+5 with DCDA B/G twins. I have a 19 month old son already.

Currently sitting in the hospital having my gestational diabetes test done. Praying I will still be eating bread without thought next week 😆 I have a scan after this as well so will be nice to see them again.

My son arrived at 38 weeks so I'm guessing the twins might be a bit earlier but we'll see. I've gained about 20lbs so far. Gained 25lbs total in my single pregnancy but was back to pre pregnancy weight in 2 weeks so not really worried. I found this website very good re recommended weight gain www.calculator.net/pregnancy-weight-gain-calculator.html

We've started to get organised but need to change my car for something that will fit 3 carseats. Limited on options anyways but looking like it will have to be a 7 seater for practicality. Will be relieved once that's sorted

Betseyrov · 05/05/2022 11:10

@applecrumbler reading your post makes me hungry 😂😂😂

@Glitterbug86 fingers crossed you passed your test 🤞🏻 how did your scan go?

I remembered I need to sort room arrangements. The twins won't have a bedroom at the beginning as they will be in mine, but I have nowhere to put their clothes. I think I might have to get a cot in my room after reading about the next2me not being suitable. I'm going to need a bigger boat room! At last we have the car sorted out, and my parents gifted us money for the babies so I'll be able to buy the mountain duet with carrycots, car seats, raincovers etc. It's going to be well over a grand .
For those who've already bought the travel system, which website did you get it from? I think I'll get it from online4baby
