A midwife told me this and i have a friend who has just had her third dd and she said her labour with this one was hellish, ten times worse than either of the last two.

Just wondered if others agreed?

LOL cat. Kno what u mean
pelvic floor ? ? a thing of the past. And two previous occupants having ram-raided the exit then no3 just slithers out. ok TMI. i have had glass of red wine. shall shut up.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2007 22:54

those afterpains!

especially once the baby starts to nurse - youch!

sucking your breath through your teeth till the letdown reflex goes away.

oh, joy!

moljam · 02/11/2007 22:54

my 3rd was easiest but i had 3 csections.i found 3rd pregnancy hardest but maybe as had 2 children to look after?dunno!

gigglewitch · 02/11/2007 22:55

but the afterpains. now there's a thing. don't stress over it but say yes to every drug they offer. Take before feeding if u intend to breastfeed. I b/f mine so no worries on that, as in it doesn't harm the baby and i had lots (yes lots) of coedine. And ibuprofen(i think) ouch tho.

Nightynight · 02/11/2007 22:57

my 3rd birth was the hardest. but maybe just coincidence, looking at this thread.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2007 22:59

can you have the codeine plus a paracetemol and still BF?

i had no pain relief w/DD2 and remember the midwife giving me both - i think!

and when i started to feed her, i knew why.

gigglewitch · 02/11/2007 23:01

expat, i did, and it was in hosp in the most competent midwifery unit in my area. They were fantastic.
I didn't have probs with DS2, just third time round

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 23:02

cocodamol brilliant stuff for afterpains

gigglewitch · 02/11/2007 23:05

nah go full monty 30mg coedine, x2 they allege it's practically heroin. Defo the wine taking over now. Shall defo shut up.

AussieSim · 02/11/2007 23:13

What an absolutely ridiculous thing to say! Some people should just be shot - if only because my stomach went into my mouth when I read the thread title. DC3 due in May! My OB warned me that I better get to the hospital quick smart with this one as DS2 took less than 2 hours from waters breaking till delivery.

gigglewitch · 02/11/2007 23:19

catchers mitts at the ready, Aussie. My DS2 was one of those (fast) then DD was mega-slow labour so you never can tell.

KerryJ · 03/11/2007 01:14

All 3 were different...1st fast by first time labour standards (3 hours in hospital, 5cms dilated on arrival), 2nd fast (homebirth, midwife here 45 minutes before he arrived), 3rd a bit iffy - false start on the Saturday (actually phoned midwife to say things were happening...very embarassing) - actually turned up after a very, very intense labout at 01.20 on the Monday morning (midwife arrived here at 01.00!)

I think it's luck of the draw tbh, although I would tentatively say that if your first 2 have been easy (ish) labours, your 3rd will be fine

hairycaterpillar · 03/11/2007 09:21

DS1- long and he was distressed I was distressed and it was horrible. TENS, gas and air then epidural(which went wrong and didnt work).

DD- lovely lovely quick painless (!?!) TENS only.

DS2- not as nice as DD but still pretty good.

Result was same for them all though...a lovely jubbley cuddley bundle of newborn precious baby

Belgianchocolates · 03/11/2007 09:42

Well, can't say too much on the subject as I actually an one of those MW's, however in my short experience 3rd ones are defo inpredictable (and my friends who have had 3 all said that those were the hardest). You'd expect the babes to come out quickly after 2 previous births, but it doesn't always happen than that. 4th ones are the ones I found that more or less happen like expected. However no birth is predictable and in the last year I've met women who had 7 and 8 babies and had C/S's with the last ones , so there you go...

3catstoo · 03/11/2007 10:07

My 3rd was the quickest delivery at 1hr 24 mins. So I wouldn't agree that 3rd is worst.

Yummers · 03/11/2007 10:07

there's no biological reason why the third should be the hardest, right?

cos i want three, but this thread's op scared me slightly.

crayon · 03/11/2007 12:09

I also heard before having DS3 that the third can be difficult because the uterus is beginning to become aggravated in some way.

My labour was good and fast (like the other two) but I had two weeks of false starts having only ever had one night of braxton hicks with DS2 and not a twinge pre-labour with DS1.

The early stages were much slower than with DS2 but that was because he was back to back and was kind enough to turn himself before trying to get out!

I wouldn't worry - I think it's 50:50 and imo it's nowhere near as painful as your first birth.

crayon · 03/11/2007 12:22

Sweetkitty - me too - I think I'd be better off by myself, behind a tree in the garden or something . I hate having people around me when I am giving birth.

gracet · 03/11/2007 19:51

Unfortunately my 3rd was the hardest and longest labour - my previous two had been relatively short (2hours and 6 hours) - but saying that I have heard others who delivered their third in minutes, so I guess it is just luck of the draw. Was absolutely fine afterwards, though, and she was nearly a pound and a half heavier than my other two which may have had something to do with it!

superwitch · 03/11/2007 19:57

this is boollocks! All my friends with 3 have laid them like eggs

tortoiseSHELL · 03/11/2007 20:13

I'd heard that as well about 3rd births being more like the first birth, and my 3rd one was probably the most painful, BUT....

1st birth - ds1, 9lb12oz, 12 days overdue, induced in hospital, and had epidural. Was about 12 hours in total, about 8 hours in hospital (labour had actually started but they continued with induction ), so don't know how actually painful it was towards the end. Certainly 2nd stage (pushing) was longer than in subsequent deliveries. Had 2nd degree tear, stitched.

2nd birth - dd, 10lb, at home, VERY fast - contractions started 7am, dd born 10.10 am. Midwife arrived 9:40, 10cm already, half an hour later she popped out. Didn't push at all, just breathed her out, lovely birth! No pain relief, did have 2nd degree tear, but not stitched.

3rd birth - ds2, 10lb2oz, again at home. Started having gentle but painful contractions Sunday evening, but managed to sleep until about 5:30/6:00. Very painful but irregular contractions from then on, settled down about 9:30, mw came 11:30ish. It was VERY long, and felt like not much progress - after 3 hours had progressed to 6-7cm (from 4-5 when mw arrived). Once she broke my waters and got me to pretend to hulahoop (to get him down) things moved on, and it was VERY VERY painful. I gave birth standing up, and it was the worst at that stage, but of course the 1st one was disguised by the epidural. I was definitely the most tired - it had been SO long to get going, and I thought I was going to be sick it was so painful. But I didn't have any pain relief, and as with dd, had a 2nd degree tear but no stitches.

sb6699 · 03/11/2007 22:43

I was in labour for 28 hours with my first and can remember telling the m/w "I can't do this any more!"

Was in labour for about an hour with my second before I went to hospital and ended up having No 2 ten minutes after we arrived in the Admissions Room!

Naturally with No 3 went straight to hospital as soon as I felt my first contraction. Was told still had some way to go so midwife left the room. 30 seconds later waters broke and baby slipped out to be delivered by stunned hubby!!!

No 3 definitely the easiest. Not planning to find out about No 4!!

TheQueenOfQuotes · 03/11/2007 22:49

no my 3rd was amazing -
