A midwife told me this and i have a friend who has just had her third dd and she said her labour with this one was hellish, ten times worse than either of the last two.

Just wondered if others agreed?

3rd was efficient and straightforward.
Others either complictated or longer.

GunpowderDragonsAndSoup · 02/11/2007 15:39

No

Nemo1977 · 02/11/2007 15:39

my 3rd was ok, felt worse but she was the only one I had no pain relief from start to finish.

lemonaidtreasonandplot · 02/11/2007 15:40

My mother's third was very quick and easy -- arrived at the hospital and my DB more or less flew out within half an hour.

[Proudly] I (#1) was her most difficult, my sister (#4) was next most difficult, my other brother (#2) was pretty straightforward in spite of being an induction, but #3 was her easiest by far.

Eddas · 02/11/2007 15:46

I'm not intending to find out

gibberish · 02/11/2007 15:46

Well, after saying that no. 3 was not MY worst labour, I was my mum's no. 3 and I was HER worst labour

What an odd thing for a midwife to say anyway. Can't think what her motive was. I think it's a load of old bunkum if it's of any consolation.

preggersagain · 02/11/2007 15:48

i was sort of hoping that this time i cough and they just 'fall' out- is that wishful thinking then???

harleyd · 02/11/2007 15:49

no, my third pretty much just fell out

DumbledoresGirl · 02/11/2007 15:51

No third was far and away the easiest, but she was a 6lb 15oz baby as opposed to my three boys who were all in the mid 8lb range, so that may have had a difference?

I do remember I had the longest, most protracted pre-labour with my third though, so maybe that is what the MW meant?

rainbowdays · 02/11/2007 15:51

I have had several midwives tell me that third births are "unpredictable", even if the previous two have started a pattern - it does not mean that third will follow. Example given was that first births often longer than 2nd births, but thirds births often in between in lenght of labour. But none of the midwives have ever said that thirds are worse births, just unpredictable.

I hope that third births are easy as my third will be here in March hopefully!

spugs · 02/11/2007 17:07

my mw told me there either very quick or can be little monkeys and not behave themselves! think she me
nt there difficult! my last 2 i had really long pre labours but once i got going no 2 was a lot quicker. does this mean i shouldnt expect the same thing with no 3? ill be sat there 10 cm dilated telling my hubby its ok ive only been contrascting 2 hrs its just pre labour and all hell will break loose wish there was a labour crystal ball

both of mine were born the day after the due date so if that doesnt happen this time that ll be another suprise!

saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/11/2007 17:13

My third wasn't my favourite - it was very quick and I didn't feel in control. Number 2 was the better experience.

honeyapple · 02/11/2007 17:16

Well I am a week overdue with number 3... been having the LONGEST pre-labour ever which is getting me down a bit... just want it all to start properly! I dont care anymore what the labour will be like, I just want my baby here NOW!!!!!!!!!!

hana · 02/11/2007 17:18

not at all
found that first was most difficult as I had no idea to expect

why do people perpetuate these myths? and esp a midwife. very unprofessional, almost like she takes pleasure in someone elses pain/fear

Lulumama · 02/11/2007 17:18

have heard from MWs that 3rd labours are more likely to go either way.. ie be fabulous or be terrible ! but from my friends who have had 3, they seem to be fine , on the whole, my friends 4th was her worst ! you just cannot tell, but don;t go into it with the mindset it will be worse!!

GrapefruitMoon · 02/11/2007 17:20

No 2 was definitely the easiest but I was in batter shape physically for that one....

With No 3 I seemed to suffer every minor complication in the book, then he flipped over one night to go breech (at 37 weeks!) and was 11 days overdue....

I would say the birth itself was not as bad as the first but not as easy as the second....

JARM · 02/11/2007 17:23

arghhhhh knewi shouldnt have clicked this thread - due number 3 in 3 weeks!!

DD1 - induced - long labour - epidural 6lbs 6oz

DD2 - failed epidural, 7hrs start to finish, face first presentation, gas and air 7lbs 3oz - much better labour than DD1

DS - reckon because he is a boy he will be a pain in the backside!

NorthernLurker · 02/11/2007 18:35

Number 3 was about same length as number 2 and I wouldn't say any of them were nightmare experiences but this last one was the one where I felt I really cracked this birthing thing

Mintpurple · 02/11/2007 19:08

LOL at JARM - I think you're going to get a pain in the backside in 3 weeks whatever you have

NAB3sparklesandflashes · 02/11/2007 19:09

Not quite right as 3rd baby but 2nd labour but it was half the time of my second baby but a lot more stressful ( I was oblivious to that tho)

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 19:59

eh?

my third wasa piece o piss.

mind you, so was second. and first wasnt bad really. (compared to many wasa total picnic)

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 21:40

DP has said if I had my way I would say I'm away for a poo squat down, have the baby, get cleaned up, come back say "oh I had the baby now I'll just go tidy the kitchen" if only, I don't like fuss I don't like getting told what to do or interferred with, I wish I could just go it in a corner by myself.

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 21:55

ahhh, sk, thats what iw as like!
my 3rd was homebirth, had a pool ready to go (my labours are fast - yours too, right?), got in, ate my brekkie between contractions from a chair just outside the pool, and pointed anyone coming in (mw's, mum etc) to the ready-made sign on the wall of birth plan instructions, one of which was no telling me what to do, and no jollying along!

was great actually. no-one interfered, they just all stayed back and let me quiety get on with it. he was born in under an hour (2nd stage was 1 big push) and i was utterly in control the whole time. bliss. i even wish it could have gone on for longer!! [nutter]

cazboldy · 02/11/2007 22:00

Quickest and easiest for me ( abit too quick actually.) 40 mins from first contraction to birth and can't remember it hurting at all as i was on my own with dh and panicking about him breathing when he was born! All was well in the end though
5th was pretty ok too - on my own in the bath!

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 22:03

cazboldy, i bow at your fast birthing, help-eschewing feet
