A midwife told me this and i have a friend who has just had her third dd and she said her labour with this one was hellish, ten times worse than either of the last two.

Just wondered if others agreed?

DD2 was a homebirth as well, I was 8cms from time of first contraction to MW examining me 20 minutes later, waters were intact and that was what slowed everything down, once they broke my waters she whooshed out. I go to pieces in labour and am not with it so to speak so v important to me that DP knows what he is supposed to do. Was funny once the pain had gone and I was back with it I was telling them what to do "do not cut the cord" "give it time the placenta will come, theres no rush" my MWs had 40 year experince between them but this was thief first homebirth and they hadn't done a physiological 3rd stage for years they said.

flashbangfoxy · 02/11/2007 22:05

Nope, its an old wives tale. DC3 was easy. DC4 was a doddle.

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 22:08

good for you im all for asserting ones wishes in and after labour!
i did that too, with the cord pulsing out and the natural 3rd stage.
and the waters were intact till the final push too... contractions were getting strong but could feel he wasnt moving, then there was a pop sensation (underwater) and that was it; one big hard push and he was out, slippery little thing.

ahhh, im all nostalgic now.

jamila169 · 02/11/2007 22:08

My 3rd was excellent - my first was the worst

DoctorAficionadoDelArse · 02/11/2007 22:09

1st- 22 hours, gas & air, hospital delivery, episiotomy, lots of stitches.

2nd-8 hours, induced, hospital deliverey, gas and air, small tear, no stitches.

3rd-1.5 hours, home birth, no gas and air, no tear.

TWADDLE. They are all different, but the physiology of it makes subsequent deliveries easier, not harder. My number 3 was a walk in the park. I made tea a coulpe of hours later.

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 22:11

i feel utterly blessed to have such 'perfect' births!

i have a great pic of him as hes being handed to me for first time .i was on knees facing side of pool when he was born, so he was broght up and out of the water behind me and handed to me as i turned round. his eyes were wide open and his arms reaching for me - was quite freaky!

Zog · 02/11/2007 22:12

Nope, was my best.

gigglewitch · 02/11/2007 22:13

MW told me that third ones are "awkward" which i think means more unpredictable than you would imagine if you have already figured some patterns from doing it twice IYSWIM. my third ruined all of my theories, two days in slow labour, not painful til last 20 mins before birth and no pain relief , born three weeks early and not a single scratch or tear on me . Mine did get a pound lighter each time (8.5 / 7.5 / 6.5) so not having a fourth!!!

MegaaahooohLegs · 02/11/2007 22:16

My third was different in that he kept engaging and disengaging for two weeks so evrynight as I'd settle to sleep I'd start getting some really strong BH which made me think I might be going into labour.

When finally in labour I only had afew massive contractions and he was born, a bit stingy as he was a whopping 10lbs 15ozs but quick and really ok.

I was so full of adrenaline after having him I couldn't sit down, DH collapsed in a chair cuddling him whilst I cleared up the room and packed my stuff, talking and laughing madly!!

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 22:17

Thats a lovely birth story nappiesgalore, I think you are getting all misty eyed for another I lifted DD2 up put her onto my boob she latched on and stayed there for the next 6 months I think bless her.

expatinscotland · 02/11/2007 22:18

i'm already starting to freak out about having to give birth again.

Miaou · 02/11/2007 22:20

A m/w said to me that third babies can sometimes be "awkward", even after two straightforward births. The only awkward part of ds1's birth was the fact that labour was stop/start for a week before the event - otherwise his was the best of the four! (ds2 was stop/start too but I was ready for it this time )

piximon · 02/11/2007 22:23

Nope I don't agree. I have four (5th due end of March). For me, 1st was the worst (my idea of hell on earth) and also took me the longest to recover from. 2nd was a nice easy straight forward home birth. 3rd & 4th was back in hospital as twin delivery, but relatively straight forward easy births and home within 24hrs.

Miaou · 02/11/2007 22:23

lol gigglewitch, hadn't seen your post when I posted - I wonder if we had the same mw??

lilymylovely · 02/11/2007 22:24

#1 quick. painful but easy. 7lb 5oz. 3 weeks early
#2 quick. nightmare. shoulder dystocia. 9lb 5oz. 1 week over.
#3 easy peasy lemon squeezy. induced. 10lb 10z. on time.
just had surgery to correct the damage!!!

tortoise · 02/11/2007 22:24

I have had 4. My 3rd was definitely the easiest and quickest birth.

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 22:27

megalegs, thats hilarious!

sk - it does doesnt it?! i remember that about your 2nd; the constant feeding - ds2 was a little like that too, but not as much as T (thats right isnt it?).

EIS - ill do it for you. i love giving birth [fraek wink]

bluenosesaint · 02/11/2007 22:27

what a crappy generalisation!!

My first was by far the worse - 27 hours and epidural
My second was a lovely experience - 9 hours and pethedine
My third was probably the most painful but thats because it was only 4 hours from the first pain to delivering her and i had no pain releif at all, not even gas and air.

So no, my third was not the worse.

I won't be finding out about a fourth ...

xx

expatinscotland · 02/11/2007 22:28

i so dread and hate giving birth it gives me panic attacks just thinking about it.

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 22:32

I actually look forward to it expat as I will be in agony with SPD and it will go as soon as the baby pops out, also all the BH, heartburn, insomnia, being the size of a bus etc not exactly selling it am I?

Few hours horrendous torture and it will all be gone and I am never doing it again.

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 22:34

That's right nappies it is T, she's not changed finishes off DD1's leftovers most nights.

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 22:35

expat. what about meditation and hypnobirthing and ayervedic whatsits? might something like that help?

ah, sk, forgot about the spd . cripes, maybe ill leave having a forth afterall. hope it doesnt get you too bad this time

expatinscotland · 02/11/2007 22:36

i got horrendous oedema, acid reflux and hypertension.

oh, and my stomach muscles separated from each other last time.

nice.

not to mention that feeling that your insides are going to fall out the first time you stand up giving birth or go to the toilet.

oh and piles.

nappiesLaGore · 02/11/2007 22:36

lol! sounds like ds3 - eats like a horse!

sweetkitty · 02/11/2007 22:41

feeling your fanjo's at your knees

not being able to bend over

not being able to breath properly as theres a bum under your ribs
