Worried that No one likes our choice of name

Hello!

I have been avoiding telling people the potential names for our baby, as I was worried people may not like them or react badly. Some of the girls at work asked me today and I told them it was a secret, because everyone has an opinion and I don't like it when people pull faces at my choices. They assured me they wouldn't... of course... first thing they did was pull a face haha.

For a girl we are thinking either:

  • Calliope
  • Lily

for a boy:

  • Angus
  • Rupert

Everyone pulled faces at Calliope and Rupert... our two top names... am I really being too out there with those names?! I'm beginning to worry I'm going to lumber the baby with something hideous and they will resent us for it....

OP posts:

Calliope reminds me of callipers. She will have a lifetime of spelling it out and correcting mispronunciations, unless it's shortened. Obviously not everyone knows Greek mythology. I'm very well-read etc (not in the Greek Classics though) but didn't know the name. Calista is nice though.
Rupert is very hoorah-Henry.
Lily is pretty.
Angus is cute.

I know a very glam calliope but she's Greek and goes by Callie. I wouldn't use it unless you are Greek yourself

ConnieDoodle · 09/05/2020 11:40

Ive just looked up how to pronounce it and is lovely.

myangelalex · 09/05/2020 14:18

I have no idea how to pronounce Calliope, and Rupert is a bit wet sounding. Cally-o-pee?

TelephoneTroubles · 09/05/2020 14:40

I’m genuinely quite surprised by the number of people on here who have never seen the name Calliope. I didn’t think it was that out there compared to lots of the names people discuss on here!

I really like it OP, and I really like Angus too. I don’t have massively strong feelings either way about Rupert or Lily... they’re all nice enough names if you ask me!

CrazyKitkatLady · 09/05/2020 18:06

Rupert was my top name choice for a boy, I really like it. My DH didn’t though so we’ve gone with another name but it’s not a crazy choice!

Carouselfish · 09/05/2020 18:11

Agree with don't tell them. Did you mean to hyphenate them or are those first and middle?

I absolutely don't care about other people's opinions. If they were someone whose taste I admired, I might slightly be interested in what they thought but if they didn't like them, I'd still think they were wrong and not me!

RJnomore1 · 09/05/2020 18:12

I love calliope but I love names from mythology

I’m afraid Rupert reminds me of the little bear though!

Carouselfish · 09/05/2020 18:14

You are also teaching people how to pronounce a name they don't know. And then they will know it.

BeMorePacific · 09/05/2020 18:17

@LunaLula83 I love the name Rupert... but would rather eat my placenta than vote the fucking Tories. 😂 x

AgeLikeWine · 09/05/2020 18:22

Angus & Lily are both great names. Rupert is OK.

Calliope is absolutely awful, and I would pull faces, too. It sounds like an obscure African vegetable.

BasinHaircut · 09/05/2020 18:28

Just coming on to say I love Calliope. I have only heard of it because of Greys Anatomy but she is such a strong female character that it has good connotations for me. I think it’s also one of those names where you can use Callie day to day and she would know she was in trouble if you pulled the full name out Grin

BeMorePacific · 09/05/2020 18:28

If you went with Calliope, little one would likely be called Callie at school. So as long as you like the shortened version then you’re good to go xx

loubert89 · 09/05/2020 19:04

I love Calliope, it was on our shortlist for girls names.

NotNowPlzz · 09/05/2020 19:06

I adore Calliope and Rupert
