Worried that No one likes our choice of name

Hello!

I have been avoiding telling people the potential names for our baby, as I was worried people may not like them or react badly. Some of the girls at work asked me today and I told them it was a secret, because everyone has an opinion and I don't like it when people pull faces at my choices. They assured me they wouldn't... of course... first thing they did was pull a face haha.

For a girl we are thinking either:

  • Calliope
  • Lily

for a boy:

  • Angus
  • Rupert

Everyone pulled faces at Calliope and Rupert... our two top names... am I really being too out there with those names?! I'm beginning to worry I'm going to lumber the baby with something hideous and they will resent us for it....

@Theyweretheworstoftimes that can backfire badly though.... One of my coworkers did this. Chose what she called a "stripper name" when she was pregnant and told everyone that's what the baby would be called. Then when they baby was born she decided in her high hormone state that actually she was attached to the name now and would use it Grin she said she's still a embarrassed by the name haha.

NamechangeObvis · 08/05/2020 18:59

Love those names (except Lily which is massively overused)! It’s your baby so pick what suits!

Strawberrystar13 · 08/05/2020 19:02

There is absolutely nothing wrong with any of your choices so go with your favourites. If we all had the same tastes the world would be more boring so let them be rude and pull faces! I only had 1 name for a boy, no girl choices, and one cheeky cow told me it was a dogs name when I told them I would be choosing it. Well I had a boy and he is now lumbered with that dogs name but he doesn't mind one bit because Ive asked him! 🐶

LJC1234 · 08/05/2020 19:04

I love Rupert ! How do you pronounce Callilope?

Charlottethevet · 08/05/2020 19:07

@LJC1234 it's pronounced "cal-EYE-oh-pea"

Sounds like a melon.

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 08/05/2020 19:11

Oh just bloody ignore them. I had the same with my 2nd daughter. I knew i wanted to call her Beau but it took 2 weeks for me to summon the strength to tell my mother. Her reply was ' Well I suppose we will get use to that eventually' in a shitty voice. Within weeks she became Beau Beau and suited her to a tee. Your baby so call her whatever you want to. Kids grow into their names very well. I know a Hilda and at first it was a bit mortifying however now she is very much a wonderful Hilda.

SomethingOnce · 08/05/2020 19:12

Too many people don’t know the name Calliope, and the pronunciation isn’t obvious.

Acquitaine · 08/05/2020 19:14

I love the name Calliope! Would be top of my list for another baby too. I didn't realise that was such a controversial opinion, but it wouldn't stop me using it!

Dontsayfuckorbugger · 08/05/2020 19:14

Plus my cats called Cali and its a fucking cool name.

Lala241280 · 08/05/2020 19:15

Angus and Lily are lovely
Rupert and Calliope - not my choice and the fact you had to ask means they somehow don’t sit right deep down with you either

If you ask for an opinion you got to be prepared not everyone will agree

heroineinahalfshell · 08/05/2020 19:23

I love Calliope, I don't think it's weird at all. In fact it was on my list, but we've decided to go with Caroline, which still has the option of the nn Callie.

My friend refused to tell anyone her son's name prior to birth, and it turned out it was because she'd chosen the name Wolfgang (she's not German). A bit of an out-there choice that she didn't want anyone poo-pooing, but no-one said anything once he was here, and it suits him down to the ground.

We're not telling anyone our name before the birth - partially cos I'm worried we might change our minds, and partially bc people are so bloody opinionated (esp my mum!) and I don't want them putting me off.

mamablondie2 · 08/05/2020 19:27

Tbh I feel like it’s easy to focus on negatives. We have had one nasty reaction to our choice vs loads of positive ones, guess which I focus on?

Go with what you like! For what it’s worth I love Lily but absolutely not important x

maryd84 · 08/05/2020 19:27

Out of those names Lily is the only one I would like. Never heard of anyone being called Calliope. Wouldn't even know how to pronounce it.Confused

Mucklowe · 08/05/2020 19:29

Calliope is frankly ridiculous.

userabcname · 08/05/2020 19:29

Ignore!!! Thing is, you could choose a very popular and well-used name and some people still wouldn't like it. There are many names that I find very drab/ugly, which are often referred to as "timeless classics" on mn, while anything even slightly unusual is considered "too much" (just the other day I read a thread where more than one poster thought Leila was exotic!!) so that just goes to show how tastes differ. Fwiw I love Calliope! It's beautiful!

UnmightyBoosh · 08/05/2020 19:31

I wouldn’t have pronounced it like that.

Angus and Lily are nicer.

BuffaloCauliflower · 08/05/2020 19:32

Calliope is lovely, much nice than boring Lily. It’s unusual but it’s a proper, real name (from Greek mythology)

missmouse101 · 08/05/2020 19:36

Surely it's pronounced Cally o pee? It's a good name, but I'm afraid I don't like it if it's Cally o pie.

Charlottethevet · 08/05/2020 19:37

@KatnissK haha thankyou- your post in has made me feel a lot better ... I had a client in the other day who had 4 children called "Tyler", "Arlo" and "Leila" and "Jaxon" and I hate every single one of those names... as you say, everyone has different tastes :)

to be fair, all 4 of our names are still in the running, we are going to see what the baby actually looks like to make the final decision... sounds odd, but sometimes you just get a feel for the names after seeing the baby :)

Is it a made up name ie a.mix of you and your DP

No 🤣 Calliope is the name of the Greek muse of eloquence and epic poetry. It’s also a reasonably well-known girl’s name in Greece.

AllHallowsEve14 · 08/05/2020 19:38

Calliope is one of my favourites. I like Rupert too.

Figgygal · 08/05/2020 19:40

I’d probably make a face too sorry
Not because they’re awful but they are a bit out there

overtherain · 08/05/2020 19:41

The only name on your list I'm not keen on is Calliope.

SunshineCake · 08/05/2020 19:42

I like the three names but no idea how to pronounce Calliope
