Worried that No one likes our choice of name

Hello!

I have been avoiding telling people the potential names for our baby, as I was worried people may not like them or react badly. Some of the girls at work asked me today and I told them it was a secret, because everyone has an opinion and I don't like it when people pull faces at my choices. They assured me they wouldn't... of course... first thing they did was pull a face haha.

For a girl we are thinking either:

  • Calliope
  • Lily

for a boy:

  • Angus
  • Rupert

Everyone pulled faces at Calliope and Rupert... our two top names... am I really being too out there with those names?! I'm beginning to worry I'm going to lumber the baby with something hideous and they will resent us for it....

OP posts:

Calliope is very ugly. I know she was a Muse, but it sounds like a rather intrusive piece of medical equipment.

Anything would be preferable to Calliope!

Roselilly36 · 08/05/2020 20:45

Whatever name you choose everyone will have an opinion, some more vocal than others, so go with what you like and keep it a secret until baby arrives.

SmileyCloud · 08/05/2020 20:51

I told people my daughters name, it’s a marmite name but on the whole people really like it. I was never ever changing my mind and I really didn’t care for anyone’s opinion or input, a few people told me they weren’t keen and I simply replied with ‘oh that’s a shame’.

I actually really like your choices, you can’t please everyone so don’t even try to!

Marcipex · 08/05/2020 20:57

I love Calliope and Rupert.
Fab names.
Lily is nice but vv over used.
I only have reservations about Angus because Ive only heard of one, he’s quite unpopular, and he’s called Anus.

BayHorse · 08/05/2020 20:59

FWIW I love Calliope and Rupert!

SunshineCake · 08/05/2020 22:01

It isn't ignorant not to have heard of a name Hmm.

Juno231 · 08/05/2020 22:38

@sunshinecake sure can be!
@TARSCOUT no it's a classic name from Greek mythology

OP all your name options are lovely. Calliope reminds me of greys anatomy like others have said and it's a kick ass name! Angus can be odd if you don't have any Scottish heritage IMHO and Lily is extremely popular at the moment - so Rupert and Calliope are my favourites out of those

FilthyforFirth · 09/05/2020 00:21

Love the name Calliope! Not keen on the boys ones, but perfectly normal names.

SunshineCake · 09/05/2020 07:34

Oh God, Juno let it go. Bloody hell.

BeMorePacific · 09/05/2020 07:54

I love all your name choices!
So beautiful. For some reason people always have an opinion on names. I would really not speak to anyone about them until the baby/babies are here. xx

BeMorePacific · 09/05/2020 07:56

Ps.. my choice of girls name is also going to split opinion. But my partner and so love it, and that’s all that matters xx

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · 09/05/2020 07:57

There’s a children’s book by Susan Cooper with a central character called Calliope. I think it’s a pretty name - although it would be too unusual for me.

LunaLula83 · 09/05/2020 08:12

Because they are terrible names. Please don't name your child Rupert unless you are Tory and will be bording your son.
I don't even know how to pronounce the other name. It sounds like a fancy name for a kitchen shop.

Footywife · 09/05/2020 08:17

But come on....Calliope is just ridiculous. Do you want the poor girl to be ridiculed all her life.
Rupert isn't much better tbh.
Instead of your own desperate need to be 'different' try having some consideration for the poor child who has to live with your choice.

Sexnotgender · 09/05/2020 08:22

Calliope isn’t ridiculous. You might not like it but it isn’t ridiculous.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 09/05/2020 08:23

Calliope will always remind me of Thomas The Tank Engine Grin

Name the baby whatever you like, if people don't like it, well, fuck 'em!

Maybelatte · 09/05/2020 08:24

I’ve never heard of Calliope but if you like it then go for it. Honestly, never ever tell people your names before the baby is born. It only ever leads to unwarranted opinions and it’s just the last thing you need.

Rupert is lovely, it’s on our boys list too.

Rosebudx · 09/05/2020 08:25

I love those names! Everyone always has to share a negative opinion.

I was discussing names with my dad last week and he told me that when he was young, everyone thought his dad/ my grandads name was awful and really old (his name was Henry) and I was shocked as it’s so popular now (and a name I love!).

If you like those names I’d definitely stick with them, stuff what anyone else thinks, there will always be someone who doesn’t like your choice no matter what it is Flowers

MissBehaviour1 · 09/05/2020 08:30

I love Calliope very a la greys anatomy.Call your baby whatever the hell you like they will be YOUR baby. Everyone can stick their opinions. My youngest girls have virtue names and some people didn't like them, but some people didn't push almost 8lbs of anything out their special place.

Moo678 · 09/05/2020 08:40

I can’t believe how many people here think Calliope is a made up name!!! It’s free Greek mythology guys! I think it’s lovely. I’ve always liked Rupert but my husband said it was too posh. I wouldn’t use it now anyway as it’s too popular, as are Angus and Lily. I don’t want my kids to share their names with three others in their class! I think all your choices are lovely. Try not to let other people and their reactions bother you.

Moo678 · 09/05/2020 08:40

@MissBehaviour1 I love love love virtue names - my husband won’t have any if it!

bee222 · 09/05/2020 08:45

Rupert is an adorable name! Makes me think of Rupert Bear. Who gives a shit what other people think. Not their baby - not their business.

Lavenderpurple · 09/05/2020 08:47

Ah sod them. Everyone has an opinion regardless.
For future reference though, just don’t tell people. If they press the issue just say we’ve not made our minds up yet.

Colouringinbook · 09/05/2020 08:47

I don't like them - Calliope is one of those where she'll be spend her time correcting the pronunciation. Rupert is a bear. Angus is fine if you're Scottish. Lily is pretty but popular.

This is the peril of telling people your names in advance though.

bee222 · 09/05/2020 08:51

I know a Calliope. The name really suits her. Do people not learn Greek Mythology tales as kids anymore?
