Worried that No one likes our choice of name

Hello!

I have been avoiding telling people the potential names for our baby, as I was worried people may not like them or react badly. Some of the girls at work asked me today and I told them it was a secret, because everyone has an opinion and I don't like it when people pull faces at my choices. They assured me they wouldn't... of course... first thing they did was pull a face haha.

For a girl we are thinking either:

  • Calliope
  • Lily

for a boy:

  • Angus
  • Rupert

Everyone pulled faces at Calliope and Rupert... our two top names... am I really being too out there with those names?! I'm beginning to worry I'm going to lumber the baby with something hideous and they will resent us for it....

Why does Rupert remind you of Boris Johnson's baby, *@Catlover10?Confused.

ShambalaHambala · 08/05/2020 19:44

I know a Calliope and she loves her name. I love it too it's beautiful.

Lolliloo1234 · 08/05/2020 19:45

@Charlottethevet I LOVE CALLIOPE, Callie for short. I think it rocks! Awesome name!

TimeWastingButFun · 08/05/2020 19:47

Calliope??

AngelaScandal · 08/05/2020 19:51

No grey’s anatomy fans on the thread then

GentleParent · 08/05/2020 19:52

None of those names are ridiculous - so it’s just a matter of taste. Everyone will have opinions, but yours are the only ones that matter.

SunshineCake · 08/05/2020 19:53

I love Grey's Anatomy. I only remember a Callie not a whatever that is up there. The pronunciation must be wrong..

Chickydoo · 08/05/2020 19:54

Not good names I'm afraid
Woopert is hideous

DramaAlpaca · 08/05/2020 19:56

Calliope is nice, Callie for short. Angus and Lily are also nice. I'd probably have pulled a (hopefully discreet) face at Rupert, I think it's awful.

tiredanddangerous · 08/05/2020 19:56

I thought it was pronounced cally oh pee.

IAmReportingYouForBBQing · 08/05/2020 19:57

I love the name Callie, I don't even mind calliope ( love greys) but when I hear it I don't think Greek Goodess at all.... I think steam organs and loud and brassy, gallopers and steam fairs. I knew a girl called Calliope in college and everybody in her family called her Organ as she was so very loud and bolshy and never shut up Grin. That's hotter I know what it means.

Your colleagues were rude to pull faces.

However....
if you like Greek names and you think you might use Callie or Cal as a nickname, how about Calista?

Theyweretheworstoftimes · 08/05/2020 20:05

@lazydaisydaydream no great fear of us getting attached to

"Something Ridiculous "

Don't think the registrar would have let us 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Blueuggboots · 08/05/2020 20:05

It sounds nicer than it looks if that makes sense? But it does make me think of galloping!!

Chicchicchicchiclana · 08/05/2020 20:07

All lovely names! Please don't worry, op.

Lougle · 08/05/2020 20:07

Calliope (definitely pronounced cal-eye-o-pee) was the name of the dark haired orthopedic surgeon, who married Arizona, the paediatrician, in Grey's Anatomy.

I like Angus and Calliope. I'm not so much of a fan of Rupert and Lily.

BreatheAndFocus · 08/05/2020 20:08

Ignore the face-pullers and the ignorant people who haven’t heard of Calliope (why not just google??) None of your names are silly.

I think people sometimes just sneer out of spite - ie they’re pissed off you chose a ‘different’ name or they’re pissed off you’re about to experience the joy of a new baby and want to do something mean to try to ruin it or upset you.

ConnieDoodle · 08/05/2020 20:08

Lily looks so out of place on that list.

LadyWithLapdog · 08/05/2020 20:10

Gorgeous names, especially Caliope.

saraclara · 08/05/2020 20:12

Calliope will spend her life being called Cally-ope.

Em39ma · 08/05/2020 20:12

I’ve got lily, Rupert and Angus at top of my list.
Calliope is an old name I think it is lovely.

xxxemzyxxx · 08/05/2020 20:13

I’m pregnant with my first and we are refusing to tell anyone our short list of names, we don’t want people’s opinions on the few names we actually agree on.

Our front runner for a boy is definitely a name that people will either find adorable or will down right hate it. But we love it.

Go with your instincts. We are coming up with a small list of names, as we won’t actually choose until baby is born. We want to see what our baby looks like before settling on a name.

DamnYankee · 08/05/2020 20:36

I agree about Rupert. It makes me think of the Harry Potter actor who played Ron. Gus I like. Angus not so much.
I know a Calliope and she was adorable! Too many Lilys out there, though I love the name.

That being said - your baby, your choice.
