sorry for being presumptuous enough to start a new thread but I had so much to catch up on and fill you in on...

hiya all - finally settled and have pc at home!! Singapore was wonderful if exhausting. The heat took a lot out of me but it was great to have the break before we headed into the move again. We are in our house and settled - almost unpacked - just books and non essentials left to sort out.

had my first real ante natal appt last week - found a great GP - very approachable and very pro - woman's choice re: everything - amount and type of testing - I had three hospitals to choose from. She then did a proper antenatal consultation and I got to hear the baby's heart beat - great I also have my referral for my scan but have yet to have a date.

Halfway( 20 weeks) today - EDD is 5th November.

Over here the antenatal care is either shared between the GP and the hospital consultant or is all hospital based - there are a couple of midwife led birthing units but very hard to get into - done by ballot system and at this late stage no way I would even get a look in.

Gp was brilliant - took all I had to tell her about last pregnancy in her stride and rather than preaching and assuming what I wanted ( like the GP and midwife in UK) she asked me what I wanted.

Unlike the UK - homebirths are extremely rare - I have decided to have a hospital birth in the major hospital for the state - should anything like last time happen again I am right there rather than having to be transferred or having the baby transferred.

Now I just have to wait for them to get back to me with an anomaly scan date. Hopefully all being well - next week.

Glad to hear all is well with everyone else - baby is moving and heard it swishing around whilst the GP was trying to hear the heartbeat. Definitely in maternity clothes now - got some good jeans from George/ASDA before we left.

Take care....

Hi Sam. The nurse basically said to keep taking the paracetamol, and she also suggested using ice or warm bath to soothe and to put the foot up if possible. Went round to a friend's house after seeing her and she gave me a rapidice to put my foot in! It does seem a bit better. I now have a bag of frozen peas wrapped around it. Will try the tape too. Thanks.

I've developed a passion for opal fruits - sorry, starbursts. mmmmmmmmm......

PotPourri · 29/07/2004 20:46

Poor gingernut, sorry to hear about your toe.

I'm doing fine, eating like a pig ALL day though. My baby bump is getting bigger and bigger, and I am a right grumpy moo with people (aggressive pregnant lady!).

Sam, not heard from you for a while. How is that studying going? I've FINALLY handed in my dissertation! And the day after I got a bill through for a late submission. Hopefully work will pay that, no questions asked (if I don't mention it was my late submission that incurred the cost)... we'll see. Anyway, hope you are doing ok with your studying Sam, chin up, there is an end in sight and think how amazing it would be for it all to be over with! (fingers crossed I've actually passed - the next big hurdle)

I seem to have developed a thing for raw carrots. What is that about? But at least they are healthy (unlike the cadbury's roses that I keep eating like there's no tomorrow).

Hi PP, I think I might of confused you, I'm Sam I changed my name last week I think? Worried I was really 'obvious'!! Haven't done that much work really , but plan to knuckle down at the weekend as I have it off and dp will be at work. Well done for handing it in, it is a lovely feeling! When do you find out the results?

bunny2 · 30/07/2004 16:06

A woman smiled at me today and said "not long to go now". I replied "4 months actually" and she looked so shocked. Does anyone else look 8 months gone?

Dh wants us to move before the baby is due. Is he mad? I suppose it will be easier to move with one child rather than 2.

PotPourri · 30/07/2004 17:58

Oh I see. I rememeber the name change now that you say it. I will hopefully find out in about 3 weeks time, so fingers crossed.

Keep at it Flossam, you'll get there! Gingernut, take care of your injured toe m'dear. Have a great weekend all, should hopefully be lovely weather from where I am sitting.

Quackers · 30/07/2004 20:47

THanks for your message Bunny! You're doing so well! Who would have thought we'd be here now! I'm 3 days overdue now - Arghhhh!
Tell you what though, I looked very big very quickly with both of mine. Poeple would say oh you can;t have long and still have 4 months. I slowed down tons for the last 3 months both times. Someone even said today, gosh you;ve been that size for ages!

collision · 30/07/2004 22:08

I nearly smacked someone in the head yesterday. She is one of those who HAS to say something derogatory just to make herself feel better. When I had ds she said she bet I wished I had had a girl.....she has 2 girls......because every woman wants a daughter! How rude when ds is sitting there! 'Not really ' I replied....'My son is my son and I am very happy thanks.'

Now, EVERY TIME SHE SEES ME SHE SAYS HOW HUUUGGE I am as though I am a monster!! and she wants to know the sex (not that I know or would tell her!) I look 6 months PG which is fine and it is all in my tummy not my face or arms. She makes me so mad but DH tells me to ignore it!! We think she is jealous that I have a boy as she probably wanted one as well.

When she spoke to me yesterday I looked at her and said 'HOW RUDE!' and turned away! HAH!!

Flossam · 31/07/2004 13:04

I have BOOBS!!!!
Got myself measured the other day, preparing for something as dissapointing as last time. I was a 38b, gone up from a 34b. Spent a while wondering whether my boobs must of got bigger to stay a b when I'd gone up to a 38... But now I measure a 38DD!! I couldn't believe it when they measured me! The lady went along, working it out like, A, B, C, D I really thought she would have to go back and start again because she had got herself confused!

Collision, just ignore her. Everyone seems to feel that they have to make some comment or another about you when your pregnant. Although I have to say it normally seems that the ones who have been pregnant before are a little more tactful, ie 'your very neat' rather than, 'god your huge'. Just point out to her how it felt when everyone made comments like this to her. If that doesn't work then she is just jealous imo and not worth bothering with.

arwenevenstar · 02/08/2004 07:01

Hi,
Agree with Sam Collision, just ignore the silly old bint, she obviously hasn't anything better to do with her time!

How is everyone?? I've been away on a friend#s hen night this weekend.....really wierd seeing everyone drunk from a totally sober position, but it was great fun!! I also couldn't resist buying a few girlie items in the sale.......I always said "no pink" for my girl, ha ha ha - it was ALL pink!!!!

Time is flying isn;t it? It seemed to take forever to get to 20 weeks, now we're all heading rapidly for 30 at twice the speed!!

We're off on holiday next week , can't wait!!

Take care all

PandaBear · 02/08/2004 13:41

Hi Everyone,

Just spent a week in The Cotswolds on a well needed holiday. It was fab and I'm now relaxed and trying to stay cool!! Also started potty training DD this weekend and I;m so proud, she only had one accident and that one she stopped herself pretty quickly.

As for bump s/he is growing rapidly and moving around a lot more now. I know what you mean about comments about size though. My MIL looked at me yesterday and said, "oh the baby's growing then!!". You'd hope so wouldn't you at nearly 6 months pregnant! Sometimes!

Glad to hear everyone else is OK and I hope the heat is bearable for you all.

vivie · 02/08/2004 21:45

phew it's so hot! I'm having to prop the bump on extra pillows at night which doesn't help but I suppose it's easier to keep me cool than it would be a new born baby. A friend of mine has a tiny daughter and she does worry about her overheating. Both my boys will be winter babies and I think it's easier to keep piling on the blankets and cranking the heat up!
I can feel my tummy stretching some days, like I've had an enormous Xmas dinner or something. My book tells me that our babies are gaining about 4 oz in weight a week at the moment and it really feels like it! I'm looking pretty huge too, although I think a lot of my weight gain has been my boobs - now a whopping 36G! I hope they deflate after the baby's born.

Hope your toe's better gingernut!

eidsvold · 02/08/2004 22:53

we are having a warm dry winter at the moment although the odd night has been coolish... lovely rain today - first lot they have had since March. Daily temps around the mid20's. Can't imagine what it will be like with the new babe in November.... just glad the baby is due Nov and not Jan or Feb ( much hotter months).

Feels strange knowing I have had 2 summer babes - one born August and the other will be Oct/Nov...

Off to the hospital to meet my consultant today and to have my bloods and glucose tolerance test... they do it as a matter of routine for all mothers over 30 here. I am sure I will be fine - I was last time.

I feel huge - I am sure was not even this big at term with dd.

Bought some great maternity clothes on sale last week - chocolate suede-look trousers for 5 pounds and a pink maternity shirt for about 7 pounds. They are sooo comfy - especially the trousers.

HOpe everyone is doing well and the toe is on the mend gingernut!!

Bunny!! Thanks for your message, hope you;re blossoming!!!! xxxx Getting nervous now but hoping for good news in a few days!!

collision · 03/08/2004 23:51

Scan tomorrow and we are all very excited but nervous at the same time. This baby is SO active and doesnt keep still at all.......really hope all is well. Hoping to find out the sex as well which is a bit scary too.

eidsvold · 04/08/2004 01:08

hope all goes well collision.

well did not meet my consultant and feel like I basically wasted about 2 hours of my life!!

had to do a glucose tolerance test - fine.. drank the drink etc. Waited ages with a tired and irritable dd to see the doctor. Finally was called - the woman amazed me in the stupid things she said....

Felt my tummy for about 10 seconds and then finally managed to find the heartbeat and would have listened to that for about 10 seconds - proabably less. MIdwife felt all around and explained the way the baby was lying etc, listened to the heartbeat for ages and explained all the other noises that were being picked up as well.

Than went on about me having a caesarean.. I looked at her blankly and said that I intended (provided all went well) to have a VBAC. She just looked at me stunned. In contrast the GP and Midwife asked what I intended to do and went to great lengths to assure me that it was not automatic that I needed to have a caesar just cause dd was born by caesar.

She then went on about dd's heart condition and so on... asking me what she had ( it is in my notes!!!) and had it been repaired.... Goodness me - any medical professional with an ounce of brain power could see that was the case given her type of heart defect.

Then she wanted to know why we had to have genetic counselling after the scan.... I pointed to the report in front of her face and explained about the spot of calcification in the heart and that I was at increased risk of Down syndrome as I already had a child with Down syndrome - pointed to dd. She then asked me if I was sure.... it was all I could do to stop myself from laughing. She then asked how I knew my dd had Down syndrome!!! I gently explained that the neonatal paed had informed me on dd's birth that she had down syndrome and that her heart defect was a hard marker and they had done a blood test to determine what type of Down syndrome dd had....

I had a more effective appt with my midwife who is probably paid a pittance compared to this doc and I just walked out of the doc's room stunned....

All I can say is thank goodness I do not have to go back to the hospital until 36 weeks - the rest of the appts between now and then are with my sensible, brilliant GP!!

eidsvold, I'm gobsmacked. What is that woman on? Thank goodness you know your stuff and can stand up for yourself.

Collision, good luck with the scan. Bet it's a boy!!!

How's everyone else? I have had lots of stomach pain over the last couple of days, like everything is stretching. Maybe the baby's having another growth spurt.

Mum2Ela · 04/08/2004 09:36

Hi everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have been away on hols but am back now and am feeling fab!!

Haven;t had chance to catch up with all the thread below, still cannot get onto internet at home and am in owkr today but first day back and v busy! Will try to have a read later.

Hope everyone is felling as well as I am!!

x

PotPourri · 04/08/2004 13:59

Eidsvold - shocking. I can't believe that. But you are right, just focus on the GP adn the midwife who are obviously much better. If you feel like it you could complain...

M2E, welcome back. Glad you had a nice hol.

It's sooooo hot!

bunny2 · 05/08/2004 14:26

it's so hot, I hate it. And my fingers have swelled into fat sausages. On the positive side I saw my mw today and everything is fine.

PandaBear · 06/08/2004 13:40

Welcome home MumtoEla hope you are feeling relaxed. I have to admit, that I'm also hoping that this hot spell finishes soon. I love the sun, but it's just too humid with it and sleeping is a nightmare!! What have you all been doing to keep cool (apart from eating icecreams by the dozen, or is that just me??)

Flossam · 06/08/2004 21:18

Collision, how did your scan go? Haven't heard from you since. Hope you are ok.

libb · 09/08/2004 08:07

Flossam, I hope things are going well for you missus. I will be e-mailing you properly later, complete with one picture of previously mentioned bouncy castle/paddling pool combo - it went down a treat on Saturday as you can imagine! Thanks for recommending it - am now just looking forward to when DS can use it, only another 2 and a half years to go . . .

Typically we visiting Grannie-by-the-Sea for one night and it is raining, was so looking forward to getting on the beach!

Sorry for muscling in, hope all your bumps are coming along nicely !
