love the name Lola, but although DP is also a big fan, he is refusing to consider it as a serious contender due to 'Charlie and Lola' and the expected increase in Lolas.

Anyone got any good names that are a bit like Lola or have the same 'feel'. KWIM?

Lola is the short form of dolores in Spanish.

dixia · 26/09/2006 20:09

I actually live in spain, so am looking for something that wont get pronounced all wrong when the child hits school - which is why lola is good.

Leya (means loyal in Spanish)

lucy5 · 26/09/2006 20:12

I think if you like it you should go for it.

Ok, have now scoured the other Lola thread, and must admit, I am slightly put-off by its apparent popularity. Other lovely names I have stolen from the other thread are:
Jemima
Ava
Lula
Lois

  • must say, I really like Jemima, that could work.
Thanks for all your help!

Jemima is sweet but the Spanish would pronounce it completely differently.

I do have a friend whose dd was going to have Lola as a middle name, but they went with Lolita in the end. Personally think it is a bit mad but there we are.

Loyal in Spanish is 'leal' (or Fidel!), something like Leah might be nice? Madonna calls Lourdes Lola - you can't fault Lourdes as a Spanish name I reckon.

What about Amalia?

GreenLumpyTonsils · 26/09/2006 20:24

Mira (means a longing look or gaze)
Ora (means gold)
Cassia (means cinnamon)
Filia (means friend in Greek!)
Iris
Karis (means graceful)
Petra
Tiana (means princess)
Ayla
Leila (means dark beauty)
Liora (means light)

DD2 is Kiah (ryhmes with hiya!) and can also spell Kaya or Kaja.
My sis is Anona, as is my aunty!

tribpot · 26/09/2006 21:20

Have a Polish friend whose daughter is called Kaja (pronounced like Hiya).

If you are in Spain, Ines is GORGEOUS. My dad's family are Portuguese, and if I hadn't married a Scot with a 'Mc' surname that Ines would be disasterous with it would be my first choice for our baby due in the New Year (presuming it is a girl, that is!). In Portuguese is is pronounced Ee-nesh/nez (sort of half way between those two sounds!) and is the Iberian version of Agnes.

thelittlestboho · 27/09/2006 09:56

What about Aoife it's pronounced EE-fa.It's Irish for Princess/Goddess or CAOIMHE pronounced KEE-va, which means beautiful.

Unusual but quirky

Sari · 27/09/2006 10:03

We had to have a name for dd that works for Spanish speakers so chose Maia. Ds1 has a name beginning with J and that really has proved to be impossible for them.

princessmel · 27/09/2006 10:18

I liked Lola when I was preg with dd but someone told me about that porn star who's fake boobs exploded and killed her. She was called Lola Ferrara or something. And the barry Manillow song Copacabana, I went off it after that. Sorry not helping much. I think its a v cute name though.
How about Tallula,
Lila,
Polly?
