Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

I am contemplating doing the same with my 20 month old and it's been 12 years since my last ! Help Confused

cretelover · 22/03/2020 16:26

I'm hoping to do the same! Mine is almost 3 x

Mariecat1970 · 22/03/2020 19:30

I’m attempting it with my 22 month old dd- she’s my first so I have no experience of this whatsoever!

My original plan was to attempt it in the summer when she’d be just 2, but seeing as we can’t go out much anyway I thought I’d try now.

I’ve bought the ‘Oh Crap’ book so will be reading it tonight to hopefully start tomorrow!

LunaHardy · 22/03/2020 21:58

So it's just the 4 of us then with no clue lol! I have been doing a little bit of reading, the NHS website is quite good. I will have another look tomorrow. I think by the looks of it I'm going to have to wee on the potty (or at least pretend!) Confused

Im planning to start as well. Unfortunately I’m totally clueless but got another baby on the way so be good to get it done.

I recommend the ‘Oh crap’ potty training book which worked with my nearly 3 year old. I bought the book off amazon ( you can also get a kindle version) and there’s also some great Facebook support groups.
You start off going completely bare bum, no pull ups or anything and just watch your child the whole time to learn their cues for needing a wee and poo. So obviously this bit is great for lockdown as you do need to devote all your time and attention to it. As soon as they start pulling a face/ doing a wee etc then swiftly put them straight on the potty. Don’t leave your child alone is the crucial bit otherwise it’s back to waiting for them to do a wee! Sounds exhausting but it’s 100% worth it to get your child potty trained and completely out of nappies. There’s more to it but I recommend reading the book first!
Also make sure you prepare the room where the potty will be, so lots of newspaper, towels etc! Good luck 🥂

I was thinking of trying too ds was 2 a couple of weeks ago.. Haven't a clue where to start.. We have a potty and some potty training pulls up that he likes looking at. Not sure he's ready but would be a good time since we are home.

Goostacean · 22/03/2020 22:21

Yes, me, me! Planning to train DS1, he’s coming up to 26 months old. I’ve bought a kids potty book, and some character themed pants of his favourite character. Will also get a sticker set for rewarding. He’s fascinated with the potty and regularly sits on it having asked to remove the nappy, but has yet to successfully use it! Planning to start on Friday.

Goostacean · 23/03/2020 13:49

Just bought the Oh Crap! book on Kindle and am reading through it during nap time.

Mariecat1970 · 23/03/2020 15:33

We started it this morning- dd is naked from the waist down (too cold for completely naked!) and after 5 wees we’ve just had the first one completely in the potty. I’m taking that as a success!

Maxmeandbump · 24/03/2020 08:01

Hey guys, I've just started potty training too. DS is 2.5 yrs. He has a good understanding and we've been bare bum all day yesterday and starting again today. Initially he went for a poo in the potty yesterday morning. He said poo, sat down and wouldnt move untill he went which was great! He had loads of praise and stickers etc. But he cannot seem to wee on the potty, I put him on when I know he should need to go and he can't seem to go on demand which I get. But he'll be playing etc and just wee, like there's no signs, he makes no attempt to make it to the potty at all. Once he's cleaned up he'll run to the potty, sit down and say sticker.. Don't really know what I'm supposed to do with that!!! Any tips!?! And good luck everyone!!

giftponderings · 24/03/2020 16:24

Hello, hope you don't mind me joining in!

I had the same idea to train my wee girl, 28 months. She can speak very well and hides to do a poop for over a month now.

Started yesterday naked from the waist down, and we had a not very good start with approx 8 week on the floor, and then one in the potty. Completely dry during her 2 hour nap and did a pee in the potty straight after, and had no accidents at all from lunchtime yesterday until we put her in a nappy for bed. She once said "where's my potty?" And when we showed her she sat and peed.

Today she has had 5/6 accidents this morning, and then was dry when we nipped our to the chemist. Back home, another accident, and then dry for her nap again and peed in the toilet upon waking.

Since then we've had another 4/5 accidents.

She comes to tell me when she's had an accident.

Does it sound like she's ready, or should I stop?

user1493494961 · 24/03/2020 16:31

Good luck everyone.

DreamingofSunshine · 24/03/2020 16:37

Planning on starting with 2.7 DS next week Wine

Maxmeandbump · 25/03/2020 09:12

How was everyone's day yesterday?

LeniSpring · 25/03/2020 09:14

I'd have to wait. If DD wets the bed we have no launderette as it's shut now

MsChatterbox · 25/03/2020 09:51

I've done the same. Cracked naked wees but he kept weeing with trousers on. Then gave him new pants which he didn't want to wee in so cracked pulling pants down in time. Have managed to reintroduce trousers now. Final thing to tackle is pooing! He pooed in his pants this morning which he was very upset about. Wonder how long that one will take!

MsChatterbox · 25/03/2020 09:55

@maxmeandbump hiya! Your day sounds like my first attempt at potty training. So many wee accidents. In the end I left it for a few months. But in the mean time sat him on the toilet before bed. He didn't wee for a while but then started weeing every night, like he was saving his wee in the evening for the toilet. Second attempt has been a lot easier now that he can control his wee!

Maxmeandbump · 25/03/2020 10:22

@MsChatterbox well we're on day 3 now, although yesterday was abit of a half day as it got too much and he was getting cross with me when I kept trying to put him on it etc. BUT we tried again this morning, bit later then normal as my OH got up with him and so far he's done one massive wee in the potty and no accidents yet. I think I asked him at just the right time and he said potty, ran to it, sat down and went for a huge one whereas yesterday it was loads of little wees everywhere! So hoping maybe it's starting to click and I'm going to carry on for now. I've stopped putting so much pressure on him today and I'm not constantly mentioning it so think that's helped!
@LunaHardy my little boy isnt dry at night at all. He's having pull ups at night for now, I think he needs to crack daytime weeing and holding it first but everyone's different!

Maxmeandbump · 25/03/2020 10:23

@LeniSpring sorry not @LunaHardy🙈

MsChatterbox · 25/03/2020 10:29

@maxmeandbump wow that sounds really positive! I was having no success after a week hence giving up. Yes my son also likes to do it himself and not be told 😂. Really stuck with the pooping now. I put the one he did in his pants in the potty but not sure what else to do!

Maxmeandbump · 25/03/2020 10:46

@MsChatterbox yeah we did just have a bit of accident now, but he sat in the potty half way through weeing and I praised him for it. He was too absorbed in bouncing in the trampoline I think which is fair enough. I don't expect that to come straight away! He seems to be OK with pooing on the potty, he's known he's had a poo and wants to be changed straight away for quite a while now but normally it takes longer like you've said. I think one day they just seem to do it 🤷‍♀️ Yea I think in would've given up by tomorrow maybe if he'd shown no signs of improving at all... Its such a minefield though isn't it. Didn't realise it would be so hard! Haha

Kobey123 · 25/03/2020 11:14

Day 3 and finally our first pee on the toilet bought a seat with steps not interested in the potty and not happy being naked and will only sit on toilet when she wants no matter what I offer her Hmm strong willed !

MsChatterbox · 25/03/2020 12:40

@Kobey123 my son did that!!! Found it fun to sit on the toilet but completely tensed up and freaked out about potty. I hid potty for a month and got him one that looked like a toilet and he's fine with it now!
