Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

How are they getting on with poops? 😁

Goostacean · 01/04/2020 13:26

Hmm not sure about the iPad... hopefully someone else knows? I can get it on my phone, I just had to download the Kindle app- but I have a physical Kindle too.

Yesterday morning was a disaster but have managed to get it back on track today and even spent an hour outdoors (in a private space luckily) e hi chat resulted in a wee and a poo in the potty. Not much fun to bring that home(!).

Are you folks planning to get portable potties for outings? I don’t know how long it takes before we can expect them to hold it til we get to a public loo/home?

Imonlydoingwhatican · 01/04/2020 13:29

We did it, began 2 weeks ago, took the kids out of school early. Nearly 3. Dry both day and night unheard of in this house

Maxmeandbump · 03/04/2020 10:21

Struggling with wees!!! He`ll poo in the potty every time, even ask to take nappy off to do one. But weeing is literally every half hour and he seems to have no control over it and doesn't care that he gone on the floor. Have people had more success with pants? I wondered if he would feel more uncomfortable that way and realise its not nice to be wet etc!

bananaramama · 03/04/2020 10:40

We're nailing the wees but having trouble with the poos!

Does anyone have any advice?

My 2 year old seems to be be so scared to poo in the potty. He knows he needs to poo in the potty and when it does land in there (by chance) he is so so so happy and pleased with himself.

When it lands on the floor he is upset and sometimes cries because he knows it is the wrong place for the poo. He seems genuinely distraught.
He does his poo dance and generally fights the potty when he needs a poo. When he needs to wee he willingly sits down and is very relaxed.

We've been potty training for 5 days now and he doesn't seem to be getting less scared of pooing on the potty. We are trying to be super reassuring and giving him lots of cuddles and reassuring words but it doesn't seem to be helping.

Help!!

Hellohello2020 · 03/04/2020 11:40

Hi, can I join. I am an essential worker but my husband is at home with dd. Been using the potty, not consistently for a long time. Since she was a tiny baby she quite regurly is dry overnight, I guess biologically a deep sleeper? So when we do quit nappies it will be fully quit. Yesterday she had done 2 or 3 big potty wees and a poo with husband, dry and clean until past 330. She had told my dh poo but the wees she did on queue of sitting on potty I got home and when she farted I took her to potty, first wet nappy about 6, poo on potty but wet again at bedtime.

Hellohello2020 · 03/04/2020 11:42

@bannanarama, you've probably already tried this, but how about a book on the potty to take his mind off it a bit?

bananaramama · 03/04/2020 11:47

@Hellohello2020 thanks for this but every time we try to distract him with a toy, book, TV etc on the potty he just gets so distracted and doesn't do a poo! He just completely forgets and then ends up sitting on the potty occupied with whatever activity he's been given and there is no poo!

Hellohello2020 · 03/04/2020 20:34

Came home for dinner, bedtime routine was a cup of milk followed by bare bum time when after some stories she ran around saying 'naked running' and twice sat on the potty for wees. How's everyone getting on?

Maxmeandbump · 03/04/2020 22:57

I've given up for a while! Dont think he can control his bladder enough yet, he's doi g lots of little wees and can't hold it at all which was stressing us both out so he's back in nappies. I'm hoping in a month or so he will have more control and we can try again, or j may try pants to see if he can make the association of feeling wet and needing a wee etc but I'm not gonna push it. He will however always poo on the potty even if has nappies on... Weird huh!

Goostacean · 03/04/2020 23:05

I think we’ve cracked it! We’ve now got ongoing success on the potty, wees and poos, whilst wearing trousers around the house. The only issue is that he’s still working out what it feels like before he needs a poo, so will go back and forth many (like, up to 10!) times before he finally does it. But that’s fine by me and no accidents for several days now.

Next step for us from tomorrow (when DH isn’t working so can help), is to get DS using either the loo with infant insert or potty IN the bathroom only. And then in a week or so, we’ll start with underwear as well. His character pants have arrived and he’s very excited about them. So glad we’ve had the time to do this gently and get there quite quickly! It’s been 9 full days.

Dorris12 · 04/04/2020 18:22

Hey everyone, sorry to jump on thread. I started potty training my little girl Tuesday and she's getting on really well although she refuses to wear knickers! I've got character ones, pink ones and even lay them all out and try get her to choose which ones she'd like to wear and she isn't interested or when we get them on she takes them off! Please help

Harrysmummy246 · 04/04/2020 20:45

ANother dry day today- He's said he needed a wee and been moving towards the loo to pop his insert on each time.

He did have a nappy on while in the tula for dog walking but told me when I asked that he had weed in it. Trousers got wet as he got a bit deep splashing in the stream but hey.

No poo today after an accident then a potty one yesterday (he's definitely preferring potty for those)

Still trousers but no pants here.

Harrysmummy246 · 04/04/2020 20:47

Oh and he's more willing to allow DH to help him for the toilet (it's a bit high and the heated towel rail isn't much use to use to climb up)

Just battling with washing hands every time

Goostacean · 04/04/2020 21:18

@Dorris12 The technique that I’m using suggests underwear after like a month; first you get them bare bummed, then trousers or a dress only, then eventually graduate to underwear once they’ve really got it 100%. Maybe wait a bit ...?

Dorris12 · 05/04/2020 11:22

@Goostacean I won't stress then and try that! Thankyou x

Goostacean · 05/04/2020 14:45

No worries @Dorris12 hope it helps! We did it really slowly, since we have time now... 3 days bare bum, and now 7 or so in trousers. He’s completely got it, so now we’re working on using the toilet/potty IN the bathroom. Once he’s got that, in a week or two I’ll try with underwear...

Tigger001 · 05/04/2020 15:12

I did my DS at 21 months, we used a book called oh crap. I'm not normally the type who would get them sorts of books but it was brilliant.

He was done in 5 days and then went dry of a night a week or 2 later.

I really recommend it.

EmbarrassingMama · 06/04/2020 08:37

So pleased to have found this thread! DS is 22 months and I'm half way through the Oh Crap book. Have decided to start on Friday when me and DH both have 4 days off work to be on bottom staring duty...

It was helpful to read about night training separately - that has been my real concern and I don't think I'm there in the book yet.

Warm weather and lockdown seems ideal! Good luck everyone.

Sweet211 · 06/04/2020 14:08

I’m training my nearly 3 year old on the toilet with them seat things she has being doing a wee but then she does it in her nappy she’ll tell me when she wants to go to toilet I think she goes for the sake of handwash too the bubbles Smile

LunaHardy · 06/04/2020 17:07

So I've tried a few days of bare bum and it's gone pretty much the same everyday so far. No luck at all and not even one wee on the potty yet. How long did it take everyone's lo's to do their first wee/poo on the potty? I'm pretty sure she's ready as she goes somewhere private to wee/poo and tells me when she's done it. She even undresses and pulls her nappy off if when it's wet/dirty when I'm not looking. She hates sitting on the potty, won't sit there for more than about 10 seconds before kicking off and getting off. She holds on to her wee's for hours until I put a nappy on her for nap or because it's been so long that I'm worried it's too long! As soon as she gets a nappy on she does a huge wee then pulls it off! Any tips? Leave it a while or keep going?

Ps. Have ordered Oh Crap but there's a delay with delivery due to non essential item, so won't be here until the 16th April.

Hi @LunaHardy is your LO between 20-30 months? If so then you've deffo not left it too long.

Are you watching for when she looks like she needs a wee or poo and popping her on? As well as putting her on every now and then just in case?

We're 4 days into potty training our 22 month old (so don't really know what we're doing lol). But today our LO said 'wee wee' we put him on the potty and he did a poo. He literally showed no signs of understanding any of it (and I was starting to dread it all) but today something has just clicked. So you never know your LO may not be far off.

Let me send a pic from the oh crap book about not seating on the potty. Our LO doesn't like it so I'm literally hugging him and singing twinkle twinkle little star to stop him going hysterical.
