Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

@maxmeandbump I've read a little regression after initial success is normal! They realise they have to stop what they're doing to go and that's kind of boring!! Keep strong 💪🏻

Maxmeandbump · 30/03/2020 11:38

@MsChatterbox Ive just out a nappy on him... He's been in a right mood all day and I've been down too with being so isolated. I was just gonna power through but he told me he needed the potty twice, he'd sit down then get off and pee somewhere else straight away and I just got fed up an doit nappy on him. Do you think I should take it back off him? Or maybe leave it for today untill we're in better moods and try again tomorrow? I just dunno what to do really!

MsChatterbox · 30/03/2020 11:50

@maxmeandbump it's so hard to know isn't it! I've definitely been where you are and ended up leaving it for about 3 months. Earlier in the week when I thought my son was holding in a poo I gave him a nappy day to see if he would do it. He ended up sitting on the Potty with the nappy on for his wees and it didn't seem to affect him the next day when the nappy came back off. Maybe just give yourself a breather for a bit a Re evaluate what to do when you're feeling a bit calmer and happier? L

MsChatterbox · 30/03/2020 11:52

@maxmeandbump my son also did the whole sitting on the potty then getting up and weeing thing on the first attempt a few months ago!

Maxmeandbump · 30/03/2020 13:02

@MsChatterbox Yeah I think il give it today and start again tomorrow. Dunno best way to go about it though. Think I might just leave him to it, maybe I was pressuring him too much? I dunno. He'll drink so much in one go and then he'll do like 3 wees in an hour. I wonder if he's not ready if he can't seem to hold it? Feel about lost with it all today to be honest!

Bienentrinkwasser · 30/03/2020 13:11

Hello potty trainers, can I join you? I’ve just started with DS (18 months). Had him bottomless for a few hours with nothing at all, asked him if he wanted to wear a nappy for his nap or sit on the potty before and he elected to sit on the potty and did a big wee. I’m trying not to mention it too much, and had planned to just scoop him up whenever he started weeing/looking like he was going to wee but I didn’t want him to go to sleep with a full bladder. I’ve put him down for a nap with a terry towel folded between his legs nonetheless!

Goostacean · 30/03/2020 13:34

My understanding from the book is that “there is no try”. Her advice is that once your child can sing the ABC song (ie is a bit verbal, can learn though repetition) they’re ready and you must train between 20-30months, before you’re dealing with the iron will of a 3yo Grin

We’ve had a couple of accidents this morning but still getting wees in the potty (poos continue to be an issue with the trousers....), but I’m taking the view that it’s a life skill and accidents will happen, we can’t expect them to get it perfectly right immediately- any more than we expect that with any life skill. So we’re persevering (and running the washing machine Wink ).

MsChatterbox · 30/03/2020 14:22

@maxmeandbump my son is the same does loads of little wees! But he doesn't stop drinking its like a continuous tap coming out of him 😂😂. I'm going to have to limit it when we're out of the isolation and trying to leave the house 😂. Yeah I think I put too much pressure the first time as well. I do think though when they're ready it's just a lot easier. Also through the day I keep saying where do you do wees wees? And he goes in thereee! And I say that's right it makes me so happy when you wee wee in the potty. Just see what happens tomorrow and if it's a day full of accidents again maybe he just needs to be a little bit older? At least we're going into summer soon which is perfect if you want to leave it a bit for a second attempt!

@MsChatterbox Yeah we've had a break from it today but he was looking down everytime he wee`d and just as he was going to bed he asked for the potty so I'm hoping tomorrow will be better. I think he fed off my emotions today and I'm determined to be more carefree tomorrow and we'll just see how he goes. It's a real struggle for me atm with this isolation, I'm pregnant too, due july so just hoping this pandemic is over by then!!!
Like @goostacean said I think he's around the right age, he's coming up to 30 months actually so I'm wondering if we've hit that age already where he's going to play me abit with it!! 🙈 He definitely can't sing the abc song though hahaa... But then it's not anything I've ever taught him. His speech isn't great but getting better, however he understand EVERYTHING!!!

MsChatterbox · 30/03/2020 19:49

@maxmeandbump feel like your last message is me hahaha!!! I'm due in June and my sons speech is delayed too 🤣🤣. That's so positive he asked for it before bed it definitely sounds like he was just feeling the stress doesn't it! Good luck for tomorrow 🤞🏻

Maxmeandbump · 30/03/2020 19:54

@MsChatterbox aw no way!! Thanks so much, fingers crossed for tomorrow! Its not the end of the world if it doesn't work now but in all honestly I would like it sorted before bubs is here but that's all down to him, I can't force him... Unfortunately 😂 How did it go for you today, seems more positive than your last attempt at least by the sounds of it!

MsChatterbox · 30/03/2020 20:03

@maxmeandbump yes I was definitely imagining have 2 sets of nappies to change come summer! So at least this lockdown has done something positive. Today was good we have had another 💩 on the potty! He actually told me he was scared before doing it poor guy but the promise of chocolate pulled him through 🤣. He seems to be holding his wee for longer now which has resulted in a couple of accidents where he's just left it too late. I reckon the potty has got a bit less exciting 😂

Goostacean · 30/03/2020 20:47

I was definitely imagining have 2 sets of nappies to change come summer! Don’t worry! I’m doing this now, or was for the last 4 months... you just kinda get used to it, it hasn’t been too bad. Just in case it ends up happening :)

Today we had a mixed bag, a couple of pairs of wet trousers (again, having too much fun to stop and wee) and one dirty pair in the morning but he went to the potty for a poo in the afternoon. At bedtime he was already in his nappy and decided he needed a wee, told DH and even managed to hold it until pj bottoms and nappy were off! So I think we’re making slow but steady progress.

Is everyone putting them back into nappies for naps/the night?

MsChatterbox · 30/03/2020 21:13

@Goostacean oh that's amazing that sounds like really good progress! Yes I'm just going to carry on putting nappies on him until he wakes up dry consistently. Don't see the point in creating all that extra washing!!

Maxmeandbump · 30/03/2020 22:32

@MsChatterbox that's great news! Glad it's going so well! And you too @goostacean! I'm still doing nappies for bedtime and naps but he has been fighting them... Apart from today of course where he wanted to wear one. But he's no where near dry at night... Not even attempting that one yet haha! Also are you guys keeping the potty in the same place?? Or like taking it to kitchen with you if your in there etc

Goostacean · 30/03/2020 22:51

I’m keeping the potty with us in whichever room we’re in at time. DH is WFH so we’re often shut in a particular room to let him work in peace, so I just bring the potty in with us. Want to crack using it before I start asking DS to hold it...

MsChatterbox · 31/03/2020 05:15

@maxmeandbump yes mine doesn't like having one put on now either! But he definitely needs it. We have one in the living room that I take to garden with us but leave if we go to the kitchen and then I have another one upstairs!

bez91 · 31/03/2020 05:59

We did this last week (about 11 days ago) following the "Oh crap" book and surprised how well it went. 7 days in and she's been dry day and night. I really recommend the book. Saying that, we haven't left the house apart from a short drive before the lockdown and a short walk around the local field.

For anyone following the book, I found day 2 to be the worst! She likes praise and literally did 21 wees and 5 poos on day 2 - it was relentless haha!

She is back at nursery today (me and DH both keyworkers) so I suppose that will measure if it's been successful!

Good luck everyone!

Maxmeandbump · 31/03/2020 08:56

Much better start to the day so far. First wee on the potty, no prompting. He said potty so I said yeah go on then and he went and did it himself. Happy days and he slept till 8!! I'm so glad I haven't completely undone all our hard work yesterday!! I genuinely think he knows what he's supposed to do and the more I prompt or mention it the less likely he is to do it! He's so bloody stubborn 😂

Helpinghand2020 · 31/03/2020 09:25

Is anyone else who's using the oh crap method struggling with block two? DS will happily sit on the potty either with or without trousers on, but he won't push his trousers down (yes he does know how). I can take them off completely for him and he'll go, but not if they're round his ankles iyswim. The book has nothing on this lol.

LunaHardy · 31/03/2020 19:09

Wow I didn't realise I would have so many responses! Haven't been on in a while. Great that we all have each other to talk to! We've tried a few mornings of bare bum but she doesn't seem to be getting it, isn't even keen on sitting on the potty! We've gone back to nappies for now but I'm going to order the oh crap book and try again! How's everyone getting on?

Going great guns here. Almost a full day no incidents yesterday until he was distracted by DH smashing a glass. He did tell me he needed a wee but too late.

We're keeping night nappies for now as they're never anywhere near dry.

And we've done a couple of short walks away from home with just trousers

(pants are a bit of a mental block for him it seems)

Harrysmummy246 · 01/04/2020 10:17

@Maxmeandbump

Yep, this has been a case of out-stubborning DS to be honest. Mentioning it too much just makes him cross but zero prompts isn't too good either

And he isn't exactly telling us he needs a poo- more that he trumps so much we persuade him on with some tablet time or read while he sits

LunaHardy · 01/04/2020 12:04

Oh crap potty training book not available on Amazon for a couple of weeks, not an essential item apparently Grin I also don't have a kindle but do have an iPad, will it work on there?
