Potty Training During Lockdown!

So now seems like a better time than any and I've decided to potty train my 2yo dd during quarantine! I haven't potty trained for about 10 years and that was with my ds. I've bought her a potty a few weeks ago just to get her used to it but she's still not keen on sitting on it. Any tips please?

@maxmeandbump hard enough not to wee on the trampoline at the best of times 😂😂

SandyFire · 25/03/2020 18:30

We’re trying too. Daughter is just over 2. Total disaster today. All wees in pants and a tiny wee in potty. I’ll give it another couple of days and abandon if there’s no improvement. We did this with my boy and it was so much better a few months later. But thinking we may as well give it a go seeing as we’re all at home.

Goostacean · 25/03/2020 19:48

We’re starting tomorrow. Really recommend the Oh Crap book which I’ve now read, seems to make a lot of sense. Let’s see how it goes putting theory into practice...! We have carpet pretty much everywhere (and no garden), so am planning to get a big blanket over a waterproof sheet and set up for the morning in DS’s room, with him naked from the waist down. Fingers crossed!

Mariecat1970 · 25/03/2020 19:56

We are still following the ‘Oh Crap’ method so today was day 3 of block one (bare bottomed)

I was ready to give up yesterday after clearing poo up from the windowsill, sofa and floor Envy (not envy) but today dd was sat on the floor, looked at me and said “poo, potty” and so I put her on the potty and she pooed! She was so proud of herself afterwards so hopefully it will continue!

She also seems to be doing well with wees, she either gets to the potty first or if she does start to see she manages to stop herself until I can get her on the potty.

Going to try clothes tomorrow. The Oh Crap method recommends either a dress or loose fitting trousers with no underwear so we’ll see how that goes.....!

Hope everyone else is doing ok? I’ve honestly never been so exhausted just watching my child all day lol.

Day 3 with DS who is 2.9

Ok 2.5 days. Mostly got the hang of it for wees if naked bum. Did a poo yesterday on the potty (neither DH or I were in the room so we were very relieved/ impressed)

Trousers on this morning to be out in the garden. 3 pairs. But did come to us immediately each time

The chocolate button bribes have been helpful and he's tending to be moving back towards the potty as he starts pulling the face/ clutching

Glad I waited this long as he's been very stubborn about it

Maxmeandbump · 26/03/2020 07:11

@mariecat1970 I feel your pain, its exhausting! I'm constantly watching him like a hawk to make sure I don't miss any cues as he's still not telling me he needs to go etc but if I catch the Cue and ask him he'll go on the potty. Or I have to grab him half way through if I've missed it. Definitely improving but maybe not as fast as others might be. I don't have any pants for him though which is a problem once we move in to that... Hopefully I can ger out to asdas maybe to get some armed with antibac gel 🙈🙈

SandyFire · 26/03/2020 07:26

We’ve given up. It’s been less than a day. But my partner is on morning duty with the kids and he just came up and said ‘I’m putting a nappy on her’

Maxmeandbump · 26/03/2020 07:48

@sandyfire how old is she? My DS is 29 months and the first two days he was just weeing everywhere but its starting to click abit more now so sometimes holding off is worth it... Sometimes they're just not ready though

MissisBee · 26/03/2020 08:08

Just come across this thread. We're on day 6 with DS, 2y10m. We've tried twice before with the Oh Crap method, but it didn't work at all for us.
This time, we've put him in pants, and he's using the toilet with a step/seat, more than the potty. Still nappies overnight, and so far most poos have been in the nappy before it's off in the morning. He's doing great with wees though, and was completely dry all day yesterday. Soo much less stressful than last time, although chocolate buttons have been an important feature!

SandyFire · 26/03/2020 08:10

She’s 2.2. We’re not doing oh crap but using pants. She sat on the potty and did nothing. 1 min later weed everywhere. Then on the potty and weed again a tiny bit. Then another wee in pants. We stopped with my eldest and tried again and he didn’t really have any accidents and cracked it in a day.

BikeRunSki · 26/03/2020 08:17

My DC are 8 and 11, but we found COD’s potty training bootcamp to be excellent. Worked well for us. DS was 2y9m, DD was 2y4m and asked for “pants today”, so I took advantage of that!

Not sure Cod is on MN anymore, but here’s a very old thread about the bootcamp.

Started yesterday with almost 3year old boy - there wont be a better time to train him x Good luck everyone xx

paradisefalls · 26/03/2020 08:21

Dd is 3 and I've tried a few times and she just wasn't ready. But for the last week she's been taking her pull up off when she needs to do a wee and going on the toilet (she's not keen on her potty) still doing poos in her pull up tho but im sure she'll do that when she's ready. The child is practically potty training herself Confused

Goostacean · 26/03/2020 09:58

Well we’ve had an extremely successful morning- not expecting it to last! 3 weeks in the potty, two of which he told me himself he needed to go! The only problem is he won’t get off the flipping thing... Is so excited to be using it. He seems happy enough reading books etc on it, and I imagine will get bored later in the day and get off it to play, so am not worried (yet!).

Harrysmummy246 · 26/03/2020 10:05

Yeah, DS can sit on there quite a while watching TV or whatever but then usually does something. He won't sit on it if he doesn't want to so I assume he's kind of starting to understand the need to go

Goostacean · 26/03/2020 10:38

Yeah, DS had just been and then sat on it again despite me encouraging him to come and play- and went again! I think it’s the novelty combined with a whole cup of squash, which we don’t normally give him...

Whymustyoubringinthebirds · 26/03/2020 15:57

Can I join, started yesterday on the oh crap method, my LG is 23 months, can't tell if its going OK or not, only one accident this morning and all other pees in the potty but I'm noting her cue and putting her on the potty

Maxmeandbump · 26/03/2020 18:10

That's what I'm doing with my DS, putting him in the potty as soon as I see his cues. Seem to of gone back abit again today though which is annoying. Yesterday I asked him if he needed a wee and he ran to go do one but none of that today! I've bought him pants so think I'm gonna try that tomorrow to see if he takes to it better than being nakey.

Undecided91 · 26/03/2020 18:52

Day 2 - 10pairs soiled pants + 2 successfull wees on toilet (he told me he needed a wee as well) 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗

Goostacean · 26/03/2020 19:53

DS insisted on trousers after his nap and immediately wee’d in them (although to his credit he was trying to get them off and had just said he needed the potty, but I couldn’t help in time as was holding the baby). After that he accepted the benefit of a bare bum and spent the afternoon using the potty very nicely. I think we’ve cracked “Block One” but will keep him bare for at least half of tomorrow so he can practise more. There’s no rush, we’re stuck in lockdown anyway, and I have no desire to launder ALL his trousers at once...!

Mariecat1970 · 26/03/2020 20:51

Day 4 of the oh crap method today, first day of block 2 so dd was in a dress but no underwear which is probably a bit easier than trousers.

Wees were fairly successful, but dh took over while I did some work this afternoon and she pooed on the patio on his watch! However I know what he’s like and he probably wasn’t watching her as much as I would have been so maybe didn’t pick up her cues.

Going to stick with a dress and commando tomorrow and see how we get on.....

Undecided91 · 27/03/2020 07:01

Day 3 - woke up to a successfull wee on a toilet!! (we can bin the potty now as no use of it) The trick is a chocolate coin after every successfull wee. A very big positive of this self isolation 🤗

Whymustyoubringinthebirds · 27/03/2020 07:48

Last night seemed positive with asking for pee/potty so hoping that this continues today, if she lets me know for her 1st pee then I'll put a dress on for the rest of the day

Maxmeandbump · 27/03/2020 08:46

Right ladies I've been putting my DS on everytime I see his cues but so far he's not making any attempt to go to the potty on his own or tell me he needs a wee. In fact I literally just asked him if he needed one, he said no and then promptly wee'd. So I dunno if he's just not ready?? But yesterday he was standing funny, i asked if he needed a wee he said no poo and ran and did a poo in the potty so he can obviously feel a poo more than a wee. It's been 5 days though now and I would've thought he could start to recognise the sensation of needing a wee by now but maybe not? I'm unsure of what to do!!

Goostacean · 27/03/2020 08:52

@Maxmeandbump I’m no expert, we’re only on day 2, but from what I’ve read maybe it’s best not to ask him if he needs to go but just tell him it IS time to go, especially if you see a cue or know it’s been a while since the last one. Just make it casual, like “okay, let’s do this puzzle. Wee first, then puzzle, then snack. Here’s the potty”. I think sometimes they’re too distracted or having too much fun to bother with the potty themselves til it’s too late?
