Urgh - not a great day. Nothing all baby related but my aunt had an operation for bowel cancer today and they have found she is riddled and now in intensive care on life support. Next 24 hours of course crucial. They plan on turning off the breathing machine tomorrow to see if she can breathe on her own - if not, well, the obvious. If she has a cardiac - they won't resuscitate. All coincides with my DS birthday tomorrow, which happens to also coincide with a year to the date that my mum had her stroke and died a few days later. Bloody awful timing - if there can ever be a good time for this kind of thing.

Sorry - a bit me me me ... absolutely exhausted today - probably more mental than physical.

x

Mama2b5 · 03/02/2010 20:22

CTOFN- YOU and Your Aunt are in my thoughts and Prayers, timing is really awful and no time would be good for that kind of bad news but it being so close to the date of losing your Mum, must bring it all back for you so so sorry!
Next month will be a year mum passed so going away will be perfect being here is just to much for me to handle am still very hormonal! 16th March - will be in Gambaia with all kids apart from DS10/DS5 - no passports!

Mama2b5 · 03/02/2010 20:29

Socks - i also registered mr man today no thanks to midwife who nearly messed it up for me by taking away my marriage cert with my notes on monday! and hasnt brought them back!!
Crumpette- you need to let DP know and understand the urgency of getting him and the name sorted asap! also i think its a boy thing chomping hard on nipples!
Shiney- why is it when we take nappy off they decide to pee i have dodge it a few times now make sre i keep nappy there just incase, maybe its the air on there bits that makes them ermmm relax way to much!
SWH- its good that Tobin likes the carseat! i leave mine in the car so havent tried that yet, but i know isaiah loves falling asleep across my knees on the pillow which i then can transfer him to bed without disturbing him!
i suppose we all have to adapt to whatever works for our LO!

Deemented just a quick message wishing you best of luck on 16th.

Quirkybabe was born with Down's so she had ecg on day after she was born and we were originally told that possible heart murmur/blood to lungs could mean a trip to Gt Ormond's St for surgery. Cardiologist decided that not necessary and we went back for ecg with him yesterday. Luckily had the all clear so you may find all is ok for you too. We have had feeding/latching issues very similar to you and I was also told to hold breast to help.

We are bfing/topping up with sma/expressing. It's exhausting but lo is very calm baby. Who is full of cold as well, I am using saline drops and nose clear. We also favour one side. I am off to express...

sazlocks · 03/02/2010 20:47

Evening all - just coming on to mark my place on the thread. Came home from hosp yesterday after Samuel James was delivered by c section on 27th Jan. Am totally besotted with my new bundle but feeling a bit shellshocked from the operation. I will post more about what happened another time.
Sorry not had time to catch up with the thread yet but will do. Happened to see your post CTOFN and so sorry to hear about what is going on for you at the moment.

sockmonkey · 04/02/2010 08:54

CTOFN thinking of you x
Neither of my boys were chompers, just DD. MW gave me some linasoh (SP?)which seems to be helping. Left boob seems to be the favoured one. It's bigger than the other....and can squirt milk further. Naomi doesn't even have to suck sometimes, she just has to open her mouth & gets squirted. I have to tuck a muslin under my boob (no perkiness here!) so I don't get drenched in milk.

Can't wait for milk supply to calm down... I can't remember how long that takes though. I spent a while yesterday massaging my boobs cos they felt hard and lumpy. The boys don't understand why its hard to cuddle them, but any pressure on my chest is agony.

Oh all I seem to do is moan. Sorry ladies. In a years time I'll be wondering if I can get away with number 4 I'm sure. LOL.

mistletoekisses · 04/02/2010 09:37

CTFN - my thoughts and love are with you and all your family. Am so very sorry. I know exactly how difficult it is to watch a loved one like this. My father too passed away due to bowel cancer that then spread to other parts of his body. The fact that it is happening a year after your mother is just cruel beyond belief. Please try and look after yourself.

Sazlocks - welcome to the thread! Do share the birth story when you feel up to it.

Sock - my milk supply settled after a few days. If it gets really uncomfy, you can express a little to make it more bearable.

We had a better night here and have just expressed 4fl. oz of bmilk. Mum or DH will give a bottle tonight at some point. Will be interesting to see what Nico does. DS1 guzzled milk whatever the source, so fingers and toes Nico does too!

Miserable wet/ misty day here. Think will stay indoors and catch up on bits and bobs.

CTFN I am so so sorry about your aunt. Thinking of you at this horrible time I don't have anything useful to say so I will stop rambling but do know you can post whatever you want to here and we are all here for you

Fraochsmum · 04/02/2010 10:14

Oh ctofn that is really rough, I'm so sorry for you. My thoughts are with you just now and am hoping things go alright for your auntie today xxx

crumpette · 04/02/2010 10:17

shiny! 7 days and then the police! oo-er! I am so indecisive, when DD was born I registered her on the last possible day and then went back and changed her name

I will definitely try and ring and get an appointment anyway, thanks for the link mistletoe I read something about DP being able to sign a statutory declaration and complete a document so it sounds like I could go by myself if necessary.

shiny, thanks for idea re the dummy. He's definitely not hungry when he does it so I think it may help. I haven't given him one yet but he did it again last night, was fine all day and then as soon as it was bedtime and he was lying down, screamed uncontrollably, for hours, and had a lot of wind! Is it worse if babies lie down? Anyway, DP threw a big wobbly and stormed off slamming doors and slept downstairs (er, we have a baby, they cry sometimes...?!) so I might try a dummy just for settling him when he is screaming like that at night..

sazlocks glad you are both home now

mama2moo · 04/02/2010 13:20

Hi all Yey, I can finally join you here!

Babymoo still has no name! She is so lovely though and the image of dd1.

I will catch up when I get the chance, off to feed babymoo before more visitors!

alibobins · 04/02/2010 13:32

Ctofn thinking of you and your family

Welcome mama2moo

Doctor prescribed Jacob Gaviscon to see if it helps with the sickness and we go back next thursday x x if nothings changed then they are going to change his milk x x I feel better about it all now thanks for all the kind messages x x

MissMarjoribanks · 04/02/2010 16:56

CTOFN - sorry to hear about your aunt - it must be a horrible situation. I hope you get through whatever happens with all the support you need. Un-mumsnet ((hugs)).

Welcome to the other side sazlocks and mama2moo.

I've ordered the Baby Whisperer books from Amazon for £20 for three of them in a package deal. We need to find some sort of routine as at the moment we're all over the place. I'm not pushing for sleeping through the night but rather to get the days and evenings into some kind of better order so I can actually get out and about a bit more.

Mama2b5 · 04/02/2010 17:04

hi all-hope all is well with lo's feeding etc.
ctofn - hope u r ok such a awful time for your auntie i pray shes getting all the care and medical treatment she can. also i hope you are sharing your feelings and not bottling them up for this wont help and will just cause you more distress.
having a sick loved one is hard dealing with that and a newborn and the rest of the family is even harder to deal with.

Thoughts and prayers to your Aunt, family and whoever else this is effecting.

Mama2b5 · 04/02/2010 17:16

My lil man isaiah has now had his circumcision! i could not stay and watch so left him with DH while he cried out of being pinned down with legs opened, my boobs filled with milk! it was over in about 5 mins and as he had his lil manhood wrapped with a gauze i just wanted him so i could make him better!I do believe the actual circ didnt hurt i think its the unnatural position of legs for so long was what upset him so badly! he has now been fed and is sleeping peacefully i think im more upset then he is. my poor lil man!

jardins · 04/02/2010 17:34

HELLO everbody! I don't know if you remember me (I was around on the ante-natal thread over spring and summer)but I'd very much like to mark my place on the January post-natal thread. Our beautiful Angélique Aëlig Rose was born on 27th January earlier than expected but rather conveniently chose to appear on Saint Angélique day (name days are quite big in France and the medical staff at the hospital were very gleeful about this . Aëlig means little angel in Breton. My husband is from Brittany. She weighed in at 3.8 kg. She's gorgeous!!!!

The birth was fab and I feel generally on pretty good form although I found the contractions quite painful during breastfeeding: I was told this was quite normal for third babies. My little one is generally sleeping very well during the day and feeding none stop during the night. In an attempt to be positive here it's quite nice to have calm days as I can potter around and/or get stuff done without having to rush in a manic manner 'just in case she wakes up.

Anyway I hope you don't mind me joining in?

I have updated the list:

CTOFN Sorry to hear about your Aunt, I cant imagine what you are all going through. Thinking of you x

Well I think I have the hang of breast feeding. My milk is starting to come and has made it a lot better for us both. Im expecting the night and tomorrow to be interesting though. Is the best thing to try to express some if they are too hard for them to latch?

somewhathorrified · 04/02/2010 20:07

CTOFN hope you are hanging in there.

Welcome back Jardins, always good to have more voices on here.

mama2moo my boobs have not gone like melons, however from what I read it's normal to express a bit to make things more comfy..also if they are really painful use a hot compress b4 feeding and a cold one afterwards. There was also something about cabbage leaves being good for the pain, although not quite sure if this works or what exactly you are supposed to do with said cabbage leaves!

Biccy · 04/02/2010 21:17

Hi all, just popping by to say hi, and mark my place. And, wow, how does something so small create soooo much washing? Back to swap loads now..

jardins · 05/02/2010 07:11

mama2moo I was advised by the hospital staff to put a green cabbage leaf inside my breastfeeding bra having scrunched it up in your hands a little before hand and to replace with a new leaf every 3 hours. I found it quite soothing especially as I had washed the leaves in cold water which was a real treat for engorged breasts. Having a green cabbage knocking about the hospital room made for many jokes too .

A small word of warning: my breasts were so engorged that Angélique had real problems latching on and I even developped very sore nipples. This was remedied by squeezing the nipple and breast into a mouthsized shape for her!!! LOL

mistletoekisses · 05/02/2010 08:32

CTFN - how are you all? How is your aunt?

Jardin - welcome to you and your lovely little one! What a fantastic name!

MMB - when the BW books arrive, concentrate on the EASY part. It is all about the sequence of events as opposed to a strict routine. Ignore any parts that could freak you out (namely section of accidental parenting); I think the EASY technique is superb!

Mama2moo - Expressing for literally 30 secs to a min before a feed is what they advise. So you dont stimulate breasts too much but get the rock hard feeling sorted so baby can latch. I have also found that by shaping front of breast and getting that in LO's mouth works. I have to hold Nico with one hand and my breast with another, but only for a few minutes. Then he can latch on no problems. I tried the cabbage leaf thing, never worked. Maybe I had the wrong variety.

Well fingers and toes, our evening routine is doing ok for the time being. Both boys in their rooms asleep by 7.30. Then last night, DH woke Nico at 10.30 and gave him dreamfeed of EBM (started with 3 fl.oz) - apparently Nico guzzled it in 5 mins flat. Thats my boy! So am going to give 4 fl. oz tonight and see how he gets on. EBM is gold dust to me, hate the thought of it being wasted! But the great news is that I slept from 8.30 to 1.30! Bliss! Am sure it'll all go topsy turvy soon enough, but am happy it worked last night.

How is everyone else doing?
