Sponge what a lovely story! Also, I knew you are a Republican, as Alex was modelling the t-shirt, but I didn't realise your brother runs it! Good for him! A certain RoyalistRolf made some comments so I didn't mention my own views for fear she would hate me... Did I sign the petition? If not will go back to do so. I'm also seeking a petition to get rid of God Save the Queen (which Nation exactly is it representing? Not mine!) and replace it with something decent. Decent in terms of lyrics as well as music. Anything! It's just not very uplifting, really, is it? We'll have to discuss this at length when we meet, and when Rolf won't be able to sneer! (Rolf I'm only joking really!)

Ali do not under any circumstances blame me for you being sucked into Coast! I tried to watch it (because it's my patch) but alas the footie was on BBC Wales!! Duh!

NEWSFLASH not only did Iestyn start crawling yesterday, but he has a tooth today! I'll be watching him like a hawk tomorrow - who knows what will come next! Walking? Running? Writing a D.Phil thesis?

Off out tonight so may not be on again. Have lovely evenings all!

But I always wear a poppy. (For remembrance Sunday, not all year round, right?) That must never be forgotten.
On that subject - is anyone else still overemotional? I cried for most of remembrance Sunday (and can't see for tears with any war reference) thinking of all those little boys who grew up and went to war, and their mothers. And it's any kind of sad story. I'm a ridiculous crybaby these days.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 16:59

puree, ooh, this could get interesting! Btw, I wear a poppy and don't see any correlation between wearing a poppy in commeroration of our war dead and being a Republican. And lol that just cos I'm English I should support the bloody monarchy - they're German anyway!!

Why am I a Republican? Because the heridatary principle to select a head of state in the 21st century is the most ludicrously indefensible system imagineable, because I want to be a citizen and not a subject, and because my son should have as much right to be the Head of State as Charles'. Will that do?

Essie, totally agree about something to replace the National Anthem - soooo tedious.

puree, I know so many people who met on the 'net - quite the trendy way to meet nowadays!

Oh, and Essie, my money is on a D.Phil!

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 17:00

Apologies for dreadful spelling in that post - got all excited and my English went out of the window!

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 17:03

Essie, I heard this song on the radio on rememberance day:

Ten million soldiers to the war have gone,
Who may never return again.
Ten million mothers' hearts must break,
For the ones who died in vain.
Head bowed down in sorrowin her lonely years,
I heard a mother murmur thro' her tears:

Chorus:

I didn?t raise my boy to be a soldier,
I brought him up to be my pride and joy,
Who dares to put a musket on his shoulder,
To shoot some other mother?s darling boy?
Let nations arbitrate their future troubles,
It?s time to lay the sword and gun away,
There?d be no war today,
If mothers all would say,
I didn?t raise my boy to be a soldier.

(Chorus)

What victory can cheer a mother?s heart,
When she looks at her blighted home?
What victory can bring her back,
All she cared to call her own?
Let each mother answer in the year to be,
Remember that my boy belongs to me!

And cried for about an hour .

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 17:39

Essie, Iestyn will definitely be writing a D.Phil before too long - have you seen this:

poorly mummies brainy babies!

pureeandpearls · 07/05/2009 17:53

Essie- meant to say great news about the crawling before, but your tooth announcement reminded me. I think babypearls took him aside and had words! Disc in post today for you.

On subject of emotional, I will admit I was emotional before but pregnancy and motherood make me ultra-sensitive. I actually get tearful seeing people running for their trains, in case they miss it and disappoint the people waiting for them at the other end. And now Sponge has set me off again.

Wearing a Poppy comment related to army upbringing rather than Monarchical discussions, but hapy to know I among friends. Re: Republic, I totally get the logic behind it, just don't feel that way. Must be indoctrinated (and must also come from a long line of serfs who know their place and never expect too much.) I suspect a lot of my love for the Monarchy is to do with the ceremony (shallow? Moi???)

But the National Anthem sucks. Sucks. Sucks, sucks, sucks.

pureeandpearls · 07/05/2009 17:57

Oh, and who was asking about the ball pit?

whinegums · 07/05/2009 18:08

Unfortunately don't have time to join in the republic chat, although finding it v interesting, because I am going OUT tonight. Not just any old out either, I am going to see Morrissey at the Barrowlands, the finest live music venue on the planet.

Viva and BDQ - happy 10 months to Charlotte and Struan too! Yes, our lot did hang on in there, didn't they?

I met DP when we both worked together - he is still there, I was covering a maternity leave. I'd been there 8 months and met him at some do, got veh veh veh drunk, he came home with me and that's it really!

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 18:10

puree, sorry didn't mean to set you off .

If you know your place I will of course be expecting you to doff your cap and curtsey to me if you make it to mine on the 25th!

abdnhiker · 07/05/2009 18:18

Ali DH is Canadian like me. His ancestors were Norwegian, hence the name. We met on the public bus in Vancouver almost ten years ago now. I was listening to an indie punk band and he sat down next to me and started talking about the band (I had my music turned up loud to deter strange men - it backfired).

and your laptop sounds heavenly.

essie yeah Iestyn! way to go on the crawling!

puree I'm with you on the pro-monarchy side - She's the Queen of Canada too you know so she's my head of state twice over (I've dual citizenship). Growing up next to America makes the queen look like the good option!

Britain as a whole definitely needs a new national anthem though (ignoring the whole debate about Scotland needing it's own (does Wales have one officially?)).

sponge your song lyrics made me cry - am I still emotional then?

Another horrible day at work and Fraser was really upset at nursery. DS1 is settling in better though. I'm so tired this week, I feel like I've a newborn again and F is actually sleeping well.

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 19:03

AH, I always use Ireland as a fine example of a Presidential system that works - America is just wrong on so many levels!

Really sorry to hear that work and nursery is not going well this week - must be so hard . How many days are you working?

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 19:05

whinegums, missed your post!

Morrissey eh? Each to their own! Hope you have a fab night .

poppy34 · 07/05/2009 19:48

Rolfis it bad that I giggled so much at your post that I nearly spat water over my desk? Your husband does seem very good at rising above the everyday circumstances.
ah sorry you are having such a pants week and purée did your day get better?
essie good for you not singing today (and congrats to tim but more congrats to iestyn- still only shuffling and shouting here). I never sing at the rugby
whinegums am with sponge on morissey but hope you have a fab night.
I met dh at work - he was my boss, I was splitting up with someone else, I moved in with him on first date .
Feeling bit rubbish so hope I am not coming down with something - was nearly sick on the way to work as have date night and going out to dinner tomorrow . Right vegging out catching up on sky plus so I can converse properly with neenz and sponge.

poppy34 · 07/05/2009 19:50

WTF is nigel havers doing in brothers and sisters - and why is there not a throwing up emoticon.
And sponge purée am far worse re crying since Edie - watching titanic when kids couldn't get off at the end ...

DebInAustria · 07/05/2009 20:02

Why do you always get so chatty when I'm not around to join in.

Whinegums - have a great night

Ali - I met dh at college, a loooooong time ago, we've been together 21 years.

I am very emotional, so many things make me cry

Poppy - hope you're feeling better, any other symptoms(?) or just the sickness?

Rolf -I don't know how you restrain yourself - no plastic in the garden

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 20:08

Moved in on the first date! Wow!!

Rolf, what does dh have against plastic? What would he do if someone bought you some plastic garden toys without you knowing?!

AliandHerScallywag · 07/05/2009 20:15

Hey - now posting from the new pink laptop . It is a slightly compressed keyboard so can't find all the right buttons [duh]. Puree If you are still cross with your DH you could buy yourself one . I was going to post you a link to the cheap ones on ebay, but they have disappeared and the rest are all very expensive.

Thanks for telling me how you met your DH's. I guess this makes me sentimental, and probably emotional too. I am definitely liable to cry at silly things: completely get the running for trains thing, I worry about what if they don't come back . I will mention one thing (which has come up before): "The Railway Children". I watched the C4 documentary this week about children with disabilities...I blubbed.

AH - thanks for telling me about your DH I have been wondering about that for months. So the next question is how did you wind up in Scotland? Sorry that work and childcare are still not good. It is only week one, so it will settle down.

Did I spend 2.5 hours in the car this afternoon? Well, sort of . But the first half hour was actually driving home which is I think ok. Then I went inside and put some washing on. Then I had a lovely time pottering on MN and writing a long post. Then I called MIL for a chat which was nice. Finally I realised I was hungry and went and got some food at which point P woke up.

I am a monarchist too. Same as puree really: get all the logical reasons why it is a bad thing, but I just kind of think that having a monarchy is kinda cool and better than any of the alternatives. I am an army child too, so maybe there is a connection?

AliandHerScallywag · 07/05/2009 20:22

Just x posted. Poppy flippin heck on the moving in on the first date. I'm impressed. Hope you feel better soon.

Puree we never played any Oxford people at Clacton. At least, I was so drunk for most of it I probably wouldn't remember. I do remember playing the "West Herts Tarts" who were very rough, butch, old and generally scary for someone playing for a Cambridge College!

poppy34 · 07/05/2009 20:29

Rolf what are the chances of dh noticing if he is busy in the study? Deb vwry tired is other symptom. Ali I am quite jealous of a pink laptop.

AliandHerScallywag · 07/05/2009 20:39

Poppy could you be...???

For those of you needing laptop porn here you are. I forgot to mention that it has flowers on it too didn't I? [vomit emoticon]

spongebrainmaternitypants · 07/05/2009 20:44

At least you know your dh won't nick it Ali!

pureeandpearls · 07/05/2009 21:13

Ali- I'm appalled that you would need a sick bucket- I think it's beautiful. PS- all hickey players drink their way through uni. Must be something in the locker rooms!

Poppy- nice work! Such a great story to tell to E when she's larger (is that a 'do as I say not as I do' moment?)

YOu'll be delighted to know I'm friends with DH again. The school we had earmarked for Cecily is closing so we are searching for a new one....

pureeandpearls · 07/05/2009 21:18

That would be hockey players

Rolf · 07/05/2009 21:20

Aberdeen sorry work isn't going well.

Ali flowers on your laptop???

Whinegums have a great evening

DH and plastic - I'm not very good at sneaking things in.
But Sponge you are a genius! His mother is brilliant at buying very beautiful and generous presents that are precisely what I don't want the children to have, so if I can just tweak that a little bit I'll have a garden full of the plastic crap super fun toys I crave

lol Poppy - his antenna for plastic is very keen! Actually, he sneaks things in all the time , he's really bad about it. Hope you feel better soon, by the way.

Essie he's very easy on the eye isn't he?! I don't mind you being a republican, I'll chop your head off when you're not looking

How we met - we were at university in the same department, a couple of years apart (overlapped by 1 year) and were introduced by a mutual friend just after I graduated. I was planning on travelling for a bit before law school but we were totally smitten straightaway and we got married just over a year later. We've been married for 15 years.

Since DH made his Another Baby comment I can't get it out of my head. It would be really stupid though, wouldn't it? There are many many reasons why it would be better to just stop where we are.
