Weaning ladies, what are you giving the little ones? I've batch made some fruit purées but flummoxed over what "savoury" tastes to try.

OP posts:
kittykatsforever · 22/09/2013 12:33

What was the random post?Shock
Frus- savouries to try early on I've stuck simple root veg like carrot, butternut squash, sweet potatoe, for more exotic cinnamon in sweet potato is a fav I've found, broccoli, courgette and potato, adding milk and baby rice to carrot etc for a more creamy taste, carrot and pea purée , butternut squash and pear..... Any of those tale your fancy?
We had a terrible night, up every hour Hmm kitten had very strange poo yesterday, the first it's different since weening, greenish with what looked like fine brown worms or something, really really weird as we've not even tried brown or green food yet? Today's totally back to its normal chicken korma

FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 12:53

Spambot. Random mid conversation type but of writing about what I wasn't sure. And a dodgy link.

What has she eaten kitty? Banana?

Cinnamon and sweet potato, that sounds interesting. I'm going to have to try that myself.
I can't do peas. read: I can't deal with pea poo nappies

OP posts:
FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 12:54

Every hour eep. Have some Cake and Brew

kittykatsforever · 22/09/2013 13:08

She had had banana the night before! Why is that common?? I admit I didn't give dd1 hardly any as I hate banana so don't buy it but was at my mums!
Why are peas strange in poo?

peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 13:13

We're about to have carrot when baby pear wakes up.

After I wrote my last post baby pear did 4 human look alike poos while I was changing him with his legs in the air. It was pretty unsightly to watch and I all I was thinking was please don't explode like baby Frus Blush

Kitty, so I'm not alone! It must be their digestive systems keeping them up? That's so unusual for baby kitten to be up every hour!

FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 13:13

Banana goes brown. And has little stringy bits in it. (More noticeable if you stick it through a blender) which is why I don't eat banana. Eew.

Pea poo stinks.

Anyone know where to buy ice trays with lids that won't cost the earth? I stupidly didn't do this before I started weaning and now I can't batch make :-( Amazon sell them but it will take days to deliver.

peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 14:06

Ok he's refused carrot two days in a row. Do I give him something else? I only have spinach or mango in the fridge. I read that you're not meant to give sweet things at first as it encourages a sweet tooth :-/

AGnu · 22/09/2013 14:07

We got some freezer pots from Asda last time. About twice the size of ice cubes. Or you can cover a normal tray with cling film or foil or seal it in a zip-lock bag.

Runt exploded mid-change yesterday! Luckily DH was doing it! Grin

FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 14:43

I think I have the same pots as agnu. £1 for 8 at asda. Or could try eBay.
I'm currently freezing individual portions in boots breastmilk bags. Grin

Mango and spinach mix?

OP posts:
peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 14:44

Ok. I've whizzed up mango and baby rice. See how that goes :-/ Just calming him with milk first because he's gone a bit hysterical after hearing the blender for the first time Hmm

peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 14:46

Breastmilk bags! Brilliant idea Frus! I have weaning pots but it's hard to do batches with 6 pots. I was wondering if ice cube bags would work but probably not as substance would be too thick?!

FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 14:47

pear I don't get the sweet foods thing, as I think carrots are really quite sweet.
But I think as long as they Are offered a wide range of tastes you're okay.

OP posts:
bringonthetrumpets · 22/09/2013 15:05

Yeah, I don't get the sweet foods thing either. Breastmilk is naturally sweet tasting so it's all their used to up to this point. I think steamed and mashed parsnips are a really good semi-savory food too. Mashed avocado?

peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 15:28

My HV told me they can't taste at this age so you can mix avocado with mango if you wanted. I'd like to challenge her! If they can't taste how come baby pear refused carrot twice? He pulled a face and looked away and then firmly kept his mouth shut. I would say that means he doesn't like the taste of carrot! Mango and rice on the other hand was received with a smile although he's not eating much but maybe it was too thick. He did another poo straight after though! Frus ~ I wonder if it was the mango that cleared ds2 pipe works yesterday!!

peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 15:43

I'll have to try carrot with breast milk another day.

I'm struggling to fit in expressing as I'm only just making enough to satisfy baby pear. Last time I expressed I had to stay up until midnight Shock

peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 15:44

Oooooh I could put bmilk into ice cub bags and then I would have enough to mix into meals without having to express lots...genius!!

FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 15:52

Yes pear the mango seems to come out exactly as it goes in. Grin

I think your HV is talking crap. Their taste buds are developed at birth. and can distinguish between sweet and bitter, although recognition of salt develops at about 5 months.
If they can't taste why would baby frus pull the funniest faces at broccoli but not at banana? It isnt the texture since they're both blitzed and sieved. Clearly they can taste the difference.

OP posts:
peardrop2 · 22/09/2013 16:04

A word of warning to anyone with reflux babies out there. Don't give mango...bad idea Hmm I can't get anything right today!

Frus ~ not surprised to hear this as it's not the first time my HV has said something that doesn't make sense!

FrussoHathor · 22/09/2013 18:13

I'm Sad the aibu Fred that was keeping me amused was pulled for being a bunfight. Grin nothing like a Sunday afternoon bunfight. Now I'm going to have to do something productive like the dds tea.

OP posts:
bringonthetrumpets · 22/09/2013 18:31

Oh my life. See what I mean about HVs? Useless. OF COURSE babies can taste! They can detect changes in flavor of the amniotic fluid in utero and can taste different tastes in the breastmilk {some babies refuse milk after a mother has eaten onions!}.... so suddenly they can't taste actual foods? Give me a break.

I thought of other foods to try... golden beets (or the purple ones, although I don't really want to know what that kind of poo looks like Hmm), swede and turnips mashed up, all the different types of squash, riced cauliflower, kohlrabi, celery root... so many options!

kittykatsforever · 22/09/2013 18:54

What happened with the mango pear?Hmm
Great idea about the ice bag for milk as you do only need about a table spoon per feed, that'd work great and the milk bags, I never thought of that although I've got a million pots now!
Yes pear I did wonder if food was causing the wake ups but as she has a cold aswel it's so hard to know! It never affected dd1 but different babies different experiences I have to remind myself
I hate banana even more now frus and I hated it alot before! Yuck
