It was getting desperate and since MrsMCJnr suggestion came in last and I was being lazy I just went for that - hope that is ok.

Thanks, it looks really sore and tbh I now think its infected

But the splinter is right there at the top peeking out (you can feel the top of it and its really sharp.

Going to see school nurse on monday and we see what she says.

JKSLtd · 14/01/2012 17:28

Hot flannel in the meantime?
Well that's what came to mind to ease the infection side of things, but when I googled it said not to soak the area as the wood will swell.

Maybe the potato method?
Or the drawing salve as MM said.
Baking soda also recommended.
If it's really hurting maybe out of hours tomorrow?

simpson · 14/01/2012 18:36

He is at my mums tonight so she said she would try warm flannel/compress.

Will assess him when he comes back tomorrow....

madmouse · 14/01/2012 20:40

Simps sounds like his body is taking care of it tbh.

Hapy birthday Aaliyah. Smile

simpson · 16/01/2012 18:01

Happy Birthday Aaliyah Grin

The saga of J's splinter goes on Hmm

Took him to see the school nurse today and she said to go straight to A&E which we did. They looked at it and said its got to come out asap. They tried to fit in his op today but they did not have the space so we have to go back tomorrow for it to be done. They also think its a shard of glass Shock

However, the hosp have just rung and are concerned because my dad is allergic to a type of GA (which I have told the hosp the name of) They are now umming and ahhing about operating on him at all But we are still expected to go there tomorrow.

Trying to get hold of my dad as he has a card stating his allergy (as hosp need the exact words on the card) and cannot get hold of him Hmm

JKSLtd · 16/01/2012 19:00

Simps - what a rollercoaster! If you don't mind repeating yourself, how did this all happen again? How/why wood vs glass?
Really hope tomorrow it gets sorted out and that's the end of it.

All DC in bed early tonight (not all asleep yet though) after both H & T were up before 6 today.
I won't be far behind them, despite managing to nap earlier. At least DH is away tonight, so no snoring Hmm Grin

simpson · 16/01/2012 19:22

Hope you get good nights sleep Grin

J fell over in the park back in Aug when he was staying overnight with my brother and cut his hand. When he came back to me the next day the cut looked dirty etc so I cleaned it and then took him to GP the next day who said all fine, nothing in there, no infection etc.

Then it healed over with a bump and was v sore to touch so went back to doc (mid dec) who sent J for xray and it showed something in there that needs an operation to come out (appt booked for 16th feb to meet consultant) Xray showed a bit of wood (we thought)

Then this wkend it swelled a lot more and splinter moved a lot and has peirced the skin trying to get out (lots of blood) and looks infected so went back to hosp today. They said we cannot wait till appt and it needs to come out now!! First xray it looked like a thorn but the second one it looks like glass but it is big. They are going to put it in a jar for him to keep Grin

texted exH about op and no reply Hmm

Simps - saw on FB the op has been done, must be a relief to have it over with? Was it glass or wood in the end (not that it matters, i'm just curious). How is J?

Another early start, yawn, when will this phase end?!

My mum got the kids a toy hamster in a ball, the cat is fascinated Grin

latrucha · 18/01/2012 09:48

We have that hamster JKS. V popular but mind they don't put it on their heads. We had to cut out clumps of hair.

Who is it that is getting up now?

Update Simps!

simpson · 18/01/2012 12:34

J had operation yesterday but with out any pain relief Shock

Aneathesist (sp) told me at 12.30 (we had been there since 7.30) that she was not prepared to operate Angry but they would give it a go just pulling it out.

So basically they cut his hand open and pulled it out etc with him awake, it was bloody traumatic and he was screaming Sad

At one point they stopped and asked me if they wanted me to continue but once they had started it had to come out I think....

Anyway, he is fine now and at school. No stitches in hand but just not allowed to do PE for a few days and keep bandage on it.

It was glass (clear though so difficult to spot) Its about 1cm by 2mm in size. They gave it to him to keep in a little pot Grin

JKSLtd · 18/01/2012 13:37

Simps Shock x 100s! That's outrageous! COuldn't they at least have given him a local for his hand?
Poor kid :(
Hope he recovers and forgets about it asap.

latrucha · 18/01/2012 19:57

How awful for you both. I hope he'll put it behind him soon but I have a child who is still traumatised by a splinter - I mean a normal one - she got six months ago. We still talk about it reguarly. Tonight in fact.

simpson · 18/01/2012 21:51

he spent most of the evening in tears Sad

He was upset because he only got 7 spellings and normally he gets 9 (probably because he has less time to learn them than the others)

He got into a bit of shoving/pushing with another pupil today

His best friend would not play with him at afternoon break.

All this stuff would not normally bother him but I guess he is a bit traumatised (I know I am!!) so more sensitive iyswim Sad

latrucha · 20/01/2012 18:11

Sad How is he now Simpson?

simpson · 20/01/2012 19:27

lots of tears yesterday too Sad

About how a boy had tried to get him in trouble in lesson time etc tbh I also think he is struggling to adjust to the new teacher who has just started (who does not seem to have huge amounts of control over the class etc Hmm J complains the classroom is too noisy etc) as well as being in a bit of pain with his hand (and traumatised by hosp)

However he has been happier today Think he just needs a nice quiet w/end to chill!! Grin

latrucha · 20/01/2012 20:35

Poor little boy. I hope you have a cosy weekend tgether.

JKSLtd · 21/01/2012 06:04

Happy Birthday Henry GrinGrinGrin

(wish you could've had a birthday lie-in!)

Simps- Sad for J hope he gets better every day x

latrucha · 21/01/2012 09:13

Happy Birthday Henry! Four today!

(I feel your pain JKS)

simpson · 21/01/2012 09:59

Happy birthday Henry!! Grin

Fillybuster · 21/01/2012 22:03

Happy birthday Henry :) :) :) Glad the party went well, JKS...hope you're recovering now :)

A belated Happy Birthday to Martha, too :) :) Sorry its a few days late, I've not been doing too well with MN this week....

Simpson - I can't believe the saga of J's hand Shock...why on earth couldn't they give him a local anaesthetic, or some cream or something, before yanking out that enormous splinter? I think he's been amazingly brave...and if school is a bit much, maybe he can have a day or two off to recover? He won't miss that much, and it might help him get back on his feet, iyswim?

LaT - 2 weeks on your own?????? Are you ok? Mia is also doing appalling poos at the moment - her bottom is bright red and nappy changes are traumatic (for me) and a massive battle - you have my sympathy. I'm using cotton wool and warm water as much as feasible, and trying to give her bottom some air time after the bath etc....but not much seems to help :(

I can't believe we've only got 1 week left in our house. Sooooo not ready for the move and work is totally bonkers at the moment. Eek.

JKSLtd · 24/01/2012 13:37

Happy belated birthday to C Nicky - not sure if you lurk on here, sorry I missed it yesterday.

And MrsMc - haven't seen you in a while, but Happy Birthday to X today :)
And Bluebell - Happy Birthday to R today :)

Henry had a lovely time, loves all his new cars, trucks, etc. Has learnt to say 'Hot Wheels' over and over Grin
