Why not liberate Scotland and then run with a conservative majority?

Since Scotland is so mad for independence and is not homogenous with England why not set them free and then the Conservatives will have their majority?

What about the stuff the English get that WE pay for with our taxes How dare these pesky Sassenachs take our Scottish money.

HippyGalore · 07/05/2010 17:54

If a leader seriously proposed cutting a country out because all the big spaces were coloured in red and was taking the "English money", generated primarily in London, which is mostly red as well, he'd look a bit daft. Either the money argument or the voting argument but the two contradict each other when you look how London voted.

YourCallIsImportant · 07/05/2010 17:55

Earthstar, do you realise how offensive and bigoted you appear?

Granny23 · 07/05/2010 17:55

Ananotherthing - to whoever was disparaging the SNP's 6 seats, if you extrapolate that into UK wide terms they would have held 66 seats, hardly neglegable in this election. Thousands of voters who voted SNP in the Scottish Parliment and Euro elections voted Labour yesterday in a vain attempt to avert a UK Tory Government.

It is interesting to note that Scotland's one Tory seat is right on the English Border and that most of Labour's safe seats which they have held are in the North of England (or Scotland). This seems to indicate a big North/South divide in voting patterns rather than just a Scotland/England division.

JennyPiccolo · 07/05/2010 17:56

England doesn't subsidise Scotland.

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 17:56

My argument is nothing to do with money, I don't care 2 hoots whether Scotland subsidises England or vice versa

OP posts:
Earthstar · 07/05/2010 18:00

Yourcallisimportant you are reading a lot of things into my posts that just aren't there

I have no problem with any cross subsidisation that is or isn't there, no problem that one country gives stuff free that the other pays for, the point is simply that they choose to act differently and make different choices and have different prioriites so why go for joint government?

Actually I think you and others have been personally offensive in your comments about me

HippyGalore

Excellent point. For some inexplicable reason, the Tories underperformed in London, the part of the country which generates most income tax.

Does that mean that London should become independent from the rest of "Tory" England?

This whole line of argument is based on a total fallacy.

And Earthstar is just trolling, I think.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:02

Who is this "they" who choose to act differently. How do you know what our priorities are???

I am Scottish. How do I act differently from you? What are my priorities?

That is why we are annoyed.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:04

I don't think Earthstar IS trolling, I think, sadly, that a lot of people DO think like this. Quattrocento was going on about "English money" earlier too.

having so much stuff that's free that the english pay for

Earthstar 17:23:15
Scotland really does have free school lunches - see here
and also free prescriptions - see here
and also free fees for University for FOUR years

How exactly is that reasonable?

Earthstar 17:13:15
I think the scots have free prescriptions, college fees school lunches etc etc which is pretty unfair,

Looks like it's all about money to me....

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 18:04

You have demonstrated your priorities in your voting pattern

Your country has chosen to spend differently on health and education to England. These are the differences I am talking about.

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:06

"You". So all Scots people are "you" and all vote the same.

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 18:06

Earthstar 17:50:56
having so much stuff that's free that the english pay for - the scots don't pay tuition fees, the english do pay them

It's not about money for me, it may be for you, it is about differences for me

OP posts:
fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:07

so everyone who is different should be kept separate? ...smacks of BNP to me!

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 18:11

What is wrong with wanting independence? That is hardly synonymous with allegiance to the BNP, you cheapen your argument by throwing BNP in constantly

OP posts:
pointydog · 07/05/2010 18:13

I am enjoying a little schadenfreude today.

Scotland had to lump Thatcher for years as the Englander tories voted for her.

Today many Englander tories have to lump a hung parliament due to scotland's red flag. Sweet

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 18:14

Sweet perhaps but no good to anyone surely?

OP posts:
pointydog · 07/05/2010 18:14

snp isn't exactly doing a roaring trade in scotland

pointydog · 07/05/2010 18:14

personally I don;t see an independent scotland as much good either

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:14

I have only thrown BNP in once, not constantly. Anyway, fun as arguing with you is, I need to go and clean bolognaise from the carpet.

suncreamandagoodbook · 07/05/2010 18:17

I have to hesitantly say that all the Scottish people I have ever met 'dahn sarf' have been very unpleasant about the 'English'. It does get quite frustrating.. I know that sounds like a generalisation and I was racking my brains to think of someone Scottish I have met who hasn't been scathing about English people, but I really couldn't. Not to say I haven't had Scottish friends, but get them going and they will rant forever!

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:18

and I think it IS relevant..all this talk of "we dont want to subsidise YOU LOT with our taxes..go and be in your OWN COUNTRY" does remind me of a certain political party saying "immigrants want a different way of life so they should go home."

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 07/05/2010 18:19

oh well, we must all be like that then. I have never said anything bad about the "English" in my life. (only specific ones).

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2010 18:22

"I have to hesitantly say that all the Scottish people I have ever met 'dahn sarf' have been very unpleasant about the 'English'"

Definitive proof that all Scottish people are completely the same.
