Why not liberate Scotland and then run with a conservative majority?

Since Scotland is so mad for independence and is not homogenous with England why not set them free and then the Conservatives will have their majority?

edinburgh is very cosmopolitan imo ...now glasgow , thats very different , i was bullied at school for years because they thought i was english. I was born in glasgow, have english name ....

pointydog · 07/05/2010 19:30

There never has been and there will probably never be any legislation to cut class sizes. There is no money.

In most Scottish LAs, class sizes are going back up to 30+. Secondary maths and english classes which have been capped at 20 will rise dramatically too, up to 30 again, as councils make huge cuts by making teachers redundant.

We are in financial shit.

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 19:30

lol Letthereberock - you could be right , the doc was English !

antoinettechigur · 07/05/2010 19:31

SNP are second in share of the vote and are the ruling party in the Scottish Government so couldn't exactly be called unpopular. I think a lot of people up here voted labour because in a uk election it is better to be punched in the face than beaten with a baseball bat.

Why not cut England loose and leave the rest of the UK to get on with it anyway

pointydog · 07/05/2010 19:31

I believe one of the west coast LAS is determined to hang on to lower numbers in classes.

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 07/05/2010 19:33

I'm rather pleased with the Scots for rejecting the Tories - at least someone is not letting the side down!

Although - I could go and live there and be Tory free!

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 19:34

Riven ....it was the invading Romans who built Hadrians wall to keep the scots out

I posted this on another thread - I am pretty certains that the Welsh assembly is run on a similar set up as the Scottish one - but I haven't seen 1 person complain about Wales and their assembly.

drloves8 · 07/05/2010 19:49

, . was Wales ever a sovereign state?

smallorange · 07/05/2010 19:49

The cuts are pretty frightening to think about. Dd1 is in a class of 18 at the moment but it will rise in the next few years.

A teacher friend reckons they will get rid of classroom assistants leaving children without the support they need and teachers struggling even more with discipline.

And the Tories have no reason to be kind to Scotland. Blimey, maggie never even came here- just made them pay poll tax. I'm sure Cameron won't hive a fuck either as long as the south east is happy.

I am English living in Glasgow. The only prejudice I have encountered is from middle class Labour voters, who should know better.

Am shocked at some on yhe attitudes on here. And BTW it was Scotland's oil.

girlylala0807 · 07/05/2010 19:51

This has honestly made my blood boil.

PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN SCOTLAND PAY TAX. ALL THE MONEY DOES NOT COME FROM ENGLAND. ITS NOT MY PROBLEM THAT MONEY IS DISTRIBUTED IN ENGLAND DIFFERENTLY.

I for one am not sure about going it alone, but I seriously wish people would educate themselves before making stupid comments on here.

I haqve never been so angry reading a thread on here before!

Thediaryofanobody · 07/05/2010 19:51

Earthstar you truly are ignorant and obvious don't know many Scots or much about Scottish policy or funding.
For the record no one in my family voted Labour and none of us want devolution. I actually don't know many many Scots who want devolution. Maybe you should check up on how many SNP actually won their contingency and enlighten yourself a little. You also seem to be ignoring the fact that the Liberals did well in Scotland too.

I'm actually stunned the venom on MN, some of whom I respected, against Scotland. The intolerance is making me ill.

Are you sure that you want independence though?

Won't you miss all that lovely English money?
How will you fund all that free further education and stuff?

Such a vile pathetic post.

By Earthstar Fri 07-May-10 17:32:10
Jenny that is exactly what I mean - Scotland and England are not sufficiently homogenous enough to be governed jointly to the benefit of either country in my view

Earthstar Have you lived in both Scotland and England as an adult for any length of time?
I was born in Scotland to English Father and Scottish Mother.
I have as an adult lived in London and other areas of England for 5+ years then moved back up to Scotland.
There is absolutely no bloody difference between an English person and a Scottish person some are wonderful, some are awful some are just average. If you've managed to mature into an adult and not work that out then I would ask you get out into the real world.

smallorange · 07/05/2010 19:54

I don't like the Scottish MPs voting on English metters though - like tuition fees, that would never have got through without the scots. It is an anomaly which could be solved by an English parliament.

vintage · 07/05/2010 19:59

God its enough to make you vote SNP!Yes some Scottish people take umbrage at English accents but they are just twats .You gets twats everywhere England has more than its fair share for the size of it .I am truly shocked to see the opinions some people have of us .Id rather be Scottish than any other nationality on Earth doesnt mean i dont want to be part of the UK

lal123 · 07/05/2010 20:03

I voted SNP - but not because I want Scottish Independance. With people like OP about Scotland needs a strong voice in Westminster

CaptainNancy · 07/05/2010 20:11

Hmm... where do you think the money from all that scottish oil and natural gas went?

The only thing that is unfair is that England does not have a regional assembly as Scotland and Wales do, and that Scottish MPs can make decisions that do not affect Scots but affect English residents negatively.

If Scotland does gain independence it will be interesting to see where the English government puts Trident - The Thames perhaps?

PfftThePinkoLeftyDragon · 07/05/2010 20:46

A lot of this thread is horrid.

Scottish people pax tax you know - it goes to westminster. England does not dole out "charity" to scotland.

OhExpletive · 07/05/2010 20:49

Totally shocking thread. As a Scottish taxpayer I find it quite horrifying that there is such a level of ignorance about how devolution works. We pay tax, to the UK. The UK gives us money back in return. We decide how to spend it. The benefit of having our own parliament is that we have the choice - not that we have any extra cash. Suck it up.

Earthstar, awa an bile yer heid, quine.

gaelicsheep · 07/05/2010 20:53

OMG OP. Please don't saddle the few thinking people in Scotland with a Labour government for ever more. Have some compassion please! I'm ashamed to live here right now.

TheCrackFox · 07/05/2010 21:00

"If Scotland does gain independence it will be interesting to see where the English government puts Trident - The Thames perhaps?"

Earthstar · 07/05/2010 21:07

As I keep saying, it's not about the money for me, I don't care who subsidises who and am happy for Scotland to keep north sea oil and their renewable energy.

I also don't think individual people are I intrinsically different in Scotland. I do think that the priorites of Scotland as a country diverge from those of England as a country and this opinion is based on how Scotland as a country have voted.

I am not sure why so many people have ignored what I am actually saying and are creating imaginary stuff that I have never said

OP posts:
gaelicsheep · 07/05/2010 21:09

Actually the problem is Central Belt Scotland, with whom I have nothing whatsoever in common.
