Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

What the hell is going on? I would have supported the Greens potentially. There is no way im giving my support to a party that wants to end the State of Israel and leave Jews with no home. Displace millions of people. Its obscene.
Its actually insane.

I agree.
I used to think they were a bunch of nut-jobs, now I know.
What bothers me is that Labour are relying on their support as part of their voter-base to defeat the so-called 'right wing'.
I can see troubled times ahead.
Labour need to be very careful who they 'get into bed with'.

Not normally a fan of Zac Goldsmith but there’s some truth in this.

Yeh I think they’re out in the wilderness with this.

Guardian published a good article a few days ago about the arguments made to claim Zionism is racist.

I don't have enough information to be sure of my own opinion.

Zionism is the belief that the Jewish people have the right to self-determine in their ancestral homeland. The ancestral homeland in question is the Land of Israel, to which the Jewish people hold millennia of unbroken ethnic, religious, cultural, ancestral (and more) connections.
Anti-zionism, on the other hand, is therefore being anti-this; aka the belief that the Jews should not have the right to self-determine in their ancestral homeland. This means that the Jewish people should not have the right to decide their own destiny, or have any form of self-governance, in their indigenous land.

Under the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism (which is the most widely accepted definition), “Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination” is explicitly stated as an example of antisemitism.

However, this motion goes above just being anti-zionist. It not only denies the Jewish people the right of self-determination, but it proclaims that believing such is “racism”.

The irony is thick. Denying the Jewish people the right of self-determination is antisemitic enough in and of itself. But the fact that a major political party in the UK has labelled anyone who believes in this right as ‘racist’, is something which is not only deeply worrying, but marks a dark day for British Jewry.

One wonders why they are not as exercised about the Partition of India.

Disgusting anti-semites. It seems madness that they would shoot themselves in the proverbial foot over this issue but it looks like the ProPals have taken over what was once an environmentally minded party. Sad times for the real Greens.

I thought that unlikely too.

It's obviously impossible to say with certainty but I've never met a Jew, to my knowledge.

According to the 2021 census for my County, less than 0.1% of the population recorded themselves as Jewish, so it's really not that surprising.

I was a Green Party Member many years ago when it was all about Animal Rights, Vegetarianism and saving whales and the planet.
Now it has morphed into something very sinister.

I am not a Jew I have no religion but I consider myself a Zionist and I will never apologise for it . I’ve been to Israel I ve seen all religions living side by side , I’ve seen Palestinians living happily in Israel . Israel is a wonderful country with much to offer the world why should they seize to existe because a group of people refuses to accept their right to have a homeland ? Those who want to coexist will , those who do not and turn to jihadism and terrorism don’t deserve my consideration .

Same here. How anyone can support a fascist, nihilist, misogynist, antisemitic and anti democratic movement against the right of Jewish people to have a safe homeland and live in peace defeats me.
Willing fools.

I wish that the Green Party would focus on policies that will help to tackle climate change and restore ecosystems. They have just lost my vote.

It's maddening. There is a climate crisis and they've somehow just become this quasi Islamist Party. What an utterly frustrating situation.

This is a significant move within the UK political landscape- the shift in what a party stood for compared to what they stand for today is quite different.

I really wouldn’t be surprised to see Reform and Restore joining forces after this.

It's scary. My elderly Jewish neighbours (in their 80s) are too scared to go to their synagogue. It's heartbreaking.

MsAmerica · 05/10/2026 00:46

Seems rather Hitlerian, as Nazis consider Jews to be a separate race.

Twiglets1 · 05/10/2026 04:46

The Movement for Progressive Judaism condemns the Green Party’s adoption of the motion ‘Zionism is Racism’. The motion is antisemitic in its formulation and intention. By adopting it, the Green Party has made antisemitism party policy and become a racist party.

Jewish self-determination is a right. Declaring it racist is an attack on Jews. The Green Party has chosen to brand Jews who hold this belief as racists and make their equal participation in the party conditional on renouncing it.

The Green Party would not presume to tell other minorities what their identity means and then use that definition to exclude them. Jews are entitled to the same respect. The party cannot impose its own meaning on a central part of Jewish identity, declare it racist and demand that Jews renounce it.

I’m not a Jew. I’m an atheist who sees myself as a cultural Catholic.

I am and forever will be a Zionist.

Antisemitism has always thrived the most in academia and the lanyard classes, whose members are most at home in far left political parties. I am sad but I am not surprised to see the rot rip through the Greens. The Greens are being destroyed by the Islamo-fascists but are too stupid to see it or worse, happy to travel this road while both membership groups can attack Jews.

Will the Greens draw up purity lists of Jews to see who attends which synagogue? Will there be a Jew-testing Star chamber? What a bunch of fucktards.

Anne Hegarty responded to the Greens mealy-mouthed statement with “Tell you what. Get your Muslim members to promise they will never attend a mosque that criticises homosexuality. Then we’ll talk.” Good for her.

It feels embarrassing to be from the UK this morning.

Really hope more of our political leaders speak out against it today as I feel the rest of Europe must be thinking what the fuck is going on with the UK allowing this.

There are loads of states which are majority muslim and actively integrate religion into the state apparatus (personally I think this leads to being a shithole in regards to civil rights, minority rights and womens rights, but it’s up to them). In many countries women can’t pass their citizenship to their children, citizenship is tightly restricted, I know quite a few paper muslims who “converted” just to get a legally recognised marriage. Citizenship is tightly controlled.

Kuwait has literally withdrawn citizenship from tens of thousands of people deemed not kuwaiti enough recently. The idea that Israel is uniquely evil is just for stupid people who know fuck all about the rest of the world.

Edited

This is the problem. It seems that Israel alone is judged. Other states practise far more discriminatory ethnic and religious laws.
