Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

Something else to cheer me up is hearing that the first Green Party councillor has defected to another party because of the new policy.

Daniel Potter, who sits on Babergh District Council in Suffolk had defected to the Conservative party. He said the vote about Zionism "disturbs me greatly".

A principled man. Where are all the others in the Green Party and how can they justify staying in the party with this policy in place?

I grew up in the states and always voted Democrat. Two party system and all my social leanings are more left. Moved to the UK 20 something years ago and have bounced around Labour and SNP (don’t judge! Years back) and Green (ick). The last couple years have left me totally homeless. No one makes any sense to me at all.

Went on the BBC and the ‘Israel marking 3 years’ feed is mostly a lot of stories about Gaza. Surely someone could consider that 1200 people dying in horror doesn’t have to be memorialised with a string of stories about other people?

Chilling. Plus - they have willing fools to help them.

Never any shortage of willing fools. They think they're taking a principled stand but they're not. Muslims outnumber Jews in the UK by approx ten to one. So the willing fools are also cowards.

The BBC have been terrible on this issue. They've probably tried to hide their bias and have failed miserably. BBC Verify? What a joke.

Here in Wales the deputy leader of the Welsh Green Party has resigned from the party over the vote.

The Green MPs who disagree with this vote should all defect from "The Greens" and form a new party called "The Environmentalist Party" or similar, and let everyone who wants to build public policy on the basis of Environmental priorities come and join them there. The Greens are very clear in their policies that Environmental considerations are not really very important to them, so should be able to campain on the issues they prioritise without the pesky expectations of those members.
