Greens adopt policy treating Zionism as racism

The Greens have formally adopted a policy which equates Zionism with racism, a move that will dismay the bulk of the party’s MPs and has alarmed some Jewish members.

In a vote on Sunday at the party’s annual conference in Brighton about whether to back a motion which calls for Zionism, the movement for a Jewish state, to be “treated as any other form of racism”, it passed by 1,022 votes to 813.

The motion, which is now formal policy for the Greens in England and Wales, also calls for a single Palestinian state in place of Israel “with equal rights for all”.

Four of the party’s five MPs have condemned the motion, as did Caroline Lucas, the former leader who was the Greens’ first MP.

Adrian Ramsay, who co-led the Greens before Polanski, said in a statement he would vote against it, as it set out what sort of Palestinian state should exist without taking into account the self-determination of Israelis and Palestinians.

Siân Berry, another of the MPs, made the same point.

Carla Denyer, the Bristol Central MP who was co-leader with Ramsay, said the wording “risks alienating a significant proportion of Jewish people, including those who vehemently disagree with the Israeli government”.

Another Green MP, Ellie Chowns, said the motion “risks fuelling division, and risks undermining the party’s ability to advocate effectively for justice and peace”.

It’s a defence mechanism I think.

You no longer have to speak out against Palestine to be anti-Palestinian, you just have to not actively show support.

And the followers are so intense and persistent it bats away a lot of harassment and questioning from friends and colleagues and strangers to just shove a Palestine flag up.

A sort of ‘please don’t hurt/cancel me’ type thing.

Well, look what happened to Ed Sheeran when Macklemore was sacked as his support act because he was using Sheeran's stage as a platform for pro-Palestinian politics. Everyone around him quit, his tour was threatened and he was genuinely afraid of what might happen to him on stage.

People on here defended that as if that was a normal reaction.

Last year I looked into attending a weekend woodworking thing, sort of like diy skills and building. I thought it would be a nice way to spend a few days and learn something useful.

Except when I looked through the photos they had massive trans flags and palestine flags all over the place. So obviously I dodn’t book it in the end - I didn’t want to spend the weekend with a bunch of idiots.

But I kept thinking - what the fuck have they got to do with woodwork and carpentry?

Is it just everywhere now? You can’t buy a fucking cup of coffee without a palestinian flag being waved at you.

Totally agree. Also what the fuck have Gaza and Trans got to do with being green, really? It used to be about planting trees, community allotments, looking after nature etc.

It's like a virus, spreading like a cancer.

The Green Party is reported to have more than 230,000 members.
0.44% voted for the motion
0.35% voted against it
99.2% stood by and watched their party become officially antisemitic.

The Green Party might have suffered from entryism but those that didn't vote against the motion are just as responsible for spreading this hate.

Wel at least now everyone knows what to ask the Greens if they come knocking on our doors

Were you one of the people that voted for or against a Jew hate motion or are you one of the 99% that stood by and did nothing

(I need a shortened more snappy version of that for a t-shirt and some stickers)

Many historical parallels. You can fall foul of the mob by failing to denounce the 'out group'. All very sinister.

I challenged a group of pro-Pal demonstrators last year on Oct 7th - they'd chosen that date deliberately for their demo. They struck me as being really moronic.

It would be nice to think so but I think it's the board.

I wouldn't have dared start this thread on the Conflict in the Middle East Board as they always get nasty & the personal attacks start in 3, 2, 1 ...

More moderate people post on the Politics board. But yes, it has been lovely to hear some new voices and chat with like minded people.

I agree absolutely.

The posts on this thread have been both universally supportive and appalled by the Green motion. Everyone has been very adult and balanced in their contributions and it has indeed been so refreshing not to have the usual accusations and personal attacks flying about that any discussion about Gaza almost invariably attracts.

I also hope that any Jewish contributors feel somewhat reassured that there is a very strong groundswell of support. We might not have the loud, strident and aggressive demeanour that the other side have, but we are all here united in our dismay and reading and feeling the strength of feeling coming out from all these posts gives me great hope that it will indeed be “Never Again”

X is almost lighting up tonight with the pushback from so many followers against this absolute
lunacy by the Greens.

Pal flags have nearly completely disappeared in my part of London despite it being very multicultural with a large percentage of Muslim mainly Turkish and Somalia residents. Since reform and the British patriot stuff started I think people have thought twice having pal flags on their houses, business or cars. They are obviously worried it will attract thugs because they view the world through their own world view. I am not normally agreeing with people feeling intimidated, however in this case it does amusing me somewhat. These people have deliberately been intimidating the British Jewish community for a few years now. Therefore my sympathy towards them feeling worried is currently rather limited.

Thanks but a little to straight forward and not digging at them enough

They would also just start saying the kind of defence Labour candidates and campaigners did under Jez

I need to get the 99% that did nothing in there somewhere as well as the Jew hate motion

I’ve just had a tearful conversation with my uni child who has had a horrible conversation with her flatmates who are fully supportive of this motion. This is the reality. It’s horrible.

I'm sorry. This is so upsetting to hear.

Even in Labour under Jez, Jew hate wasn't party policy. It was more of a side project, something that could be dismissed as being dealt with by their (hah) complaints procedure. "We're antiracists and we don't tolerate antisemitism' is a bit harder to defend when your party has getting rid of the world's only Jewish state as policy that they will work to enact.

"How is wiping Israel off the map going? That is in your manifesto isn't it?"

This is awful. A lot of antisemitic / pro Palestine people joined the Greens just to vote on this motion. If I were Jewish, I would be feeling quite scared.

Both my parents are holocaust survivors. I never thought it would come to this but I’m scared.

Could start by asking them if they personally actively oppose hate, then follow up with asking if they were part of the 99% that did nothing while their comrades called for an entire country to be destroyed?

I used to drive through north Manchester and was always saddened by the security on Jewish schools.

I remember once wondering if it was excessive, surely not needed in Britain in the 21st century but an understandable precaution due to history.

I was naive. The Jewish community knew as they have always known.

Antisemitism has always been around, the ‘jokes’, the tropes and conspiracies.

There’s been a problem with it being tolerated on the left for my entire lifetime but I never imagined I would see antisemitism openly celebrated in the UK.

My heart goes out to British Jews and I understand why many feel scared and alone.

The Green Party is home to many bigoted fanatics with loud voices but they will not win. They cannot.

Antisemitism has always been around, the ‘jokes’, the tropes and conspiracies.

Yes, that’s been my experience, too.
It seems to be constantly bubbling under the surface, just waiting for an excuse to blow up.

I’ve read recently, that prior to the rise of the Nazi regime, German Jews were widely considered among the best integrated and successful Jewish communities in the world, to the extent that some of them even converted to Christianity.
And yet, that didn’t protect them from being singled out and brutally persecuted.

Yes. I think about this a lot. I’m very integrated and not particularly religious. My husband isn’t Jewish, I don’t go to synagogue often, my life has many other pieces to it. But I think a lot about how each generation eventually learns that people will always see us as Jewish first. I feel guilty about what my kids have gone through - people have suggested we just move and never mention being Jewish - but i am too stubborn and too proud of my history to do it. I hope I don’t regret that.

Portakalkedi · 05/10/2026 22:40

They are dangerously bonkers, and i cannot for the life of me see how anyone supports them and their dodgy leader. Yes, when they were about environmental stuff but that seems long gone.

Hedgerowmanager · 05/10/2026 22:49

Scary times.

It feels as if so many people are jumping on the Green bandwagon and it’s speeding away from common sense and tolerance.

Will it stop? Will it crash?
if it crashes what will the damage be?

They never said anti semitism. They said they opposed racism in any form, which is what The Greens are saying. But they didn't say the quiet thing out loud- that they don't see anti semitism as racism.

Why should you? Who else has to hide their ethnicity and heritage? We live in a diverse, liberal democracy. Our differences are supposed to be valued and celebrated. It's tragic that for Jewish people, they're not included in that.

I don't think that's quite correct, I think they don't see their antisemitism as antisemitism. Like, Holocaust denial is antisemitism and bad, but banging on about Zionists being evil is fine.

I was sure Corbyn had said that antisemitism was bad so I googled and found
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-45058728

And guess what. It's about how Labour didn't want to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism. They had a problem with one of its examples which they didn't agree with. What was the example of antisemitism that they didn't agree with?

"claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavour"

So Labour under Corbyn didn't want 'Zionism is racism' to count as antisemitism.

Greens want 'Zionism is racism' to be party policy.

Jeremy Corbyn

Anti-Semites don't speak for me, says Jeremy Corbyn

The Labour leader makes a fresh attempt to draw a line under the anti-Semitism row engulfing his party.
