Will there be a General Election before 2027?

As polls have tipped slightly in favour of Labour, will Andy Burnham call a general election before 2027? Kemi Badenoch thinks he might.

I think a lot of people are talking about it, but I think he will be too scared to do it myself. But not before 27 there is only 3 months of the year left.

Ah I did read a few weeks ago that Reform were going to start messaging there would be an early election.

Helpful to to track who's doing it.

You're the poster playing Deny, Distract on the thread about members of Reform physically assaulting women at the Reform conference, aren't you? Noted.

PerkingFaintly · Today 12:12

What's more interesting is WHY do Reform want an early election?

Are they worried that their popularity will wane?

HeddaGarbled · Today 12:13

Hope not. It’d be nice to have a few years without having to listen to all the piffle.

PerkingFaintly · Today 12:13

And why do they think it might wane?

Poor performance by Reform local councils? Non-attendance at Parliament by Reform MPs?

Or is there a whole lot more to come out about Reform's donors?

DontSayItsOver · Today 12:14

They have over 2 years left on a massive majority and reform are sinking. Why on earth would they do that?

ScholesPanda · Today 12:14

I'm not sure it's even possible to have a GE before 2027 now. Local returning officers have to set things up, hire counters, book polling stations etc.

And in a few months it will be Christmas, no-one will call a GE after mid-November as people are too distracted.

Well considering their polling has consistently been downward over the past twelve months, I think that horse has already bolted.

Boris Johnson did.

Think it would be foolish to call it, too risky. Labour should rejoin the EU next year and possibly the single currency. Not vote needed just get on with it and if Reform get in, they won't be able to cause any more damage.

Remember in two years Trump and his awful cabinet will be gone...that will change everything.

Thezookeepersneice · Today 12:48

I can see why Reform are floating it, while their polling is on such a sharp downward trajectory.

I personally don’t think Labour will want to go early though - and hope they don’t. I don’t think there’s much appetite in the country for more party political point scoring - I for one would much rather a period of stability.

TokyoSushi · Today 12:49

Before 2027? No... In 2027? Maybe...

Because they are hampered by the mandate from the election. But if they call an election polling indicates Labour's majority would be significantly reduced leading to further challenges with a new mandate.

So they're between a rock and a hard place.

Rejoining the EU without another referendum would scupper Labour good and proper. There would be uproar over joining the Euro.

I don't understand the obsession with rejoining. Growth is stagnant in the EU, why are they seen as our economic saviour?

Never in all my years have I seen a government “hampered” by their mandate. They’ll diverge as they like and I expect we’ll see some of this in the upcoming budget. The only pledge they’ll be too scared to break is no tax rises on working people. They’ve already scaled back on public ownership.

Yes, but he will forever be dogged by claims that this is not his manifesto.

The bigger threat to him is the PLP.

HappiestSleeping · Today 13:05

If Burnham has any sense, he will not call an election until the current term runs out in 2029.

If it leads to them having a better chance keeping their seat in 2029 than they do now I doubt they’ll care too much. Who was the last PM to not break a manifesto anyway?

There hasn't been a PM not to break the manifesto but they all do it on technicalities.

Navigating a massive parliamentary majority with a radical agenda but no direct election manifesto carries risk.

Can you see that happening? I’d personally love to see a radical agenda but I can’t see it happening from this lot even with their huge majority. They seem perfectly content tinkering around the edges until external forces compel whoever’s in charge when the music stops to make real changes.

I expect surface-level policy for the rest of the decade. Basically more bus fare cuts, levy freezes and devolution until they can limp into a coalition with the libdems and really put their feet up.

You are dreaming. They have no mandate to rejoin the EU in any shape.

If he calls a GE it will most likely be to able to increase taxes.

Or have you taken Burnham literally when he said he wants to reinstate hope?

If he tinkers round the edges until 2029, he may struggle to get the seats to enter a coalition with the libdems.

Because we are stronger as a large group, the UK is weak and America is taking full advantage of it.
