Will there be a General Election before 2027?

As polls have tipped slightly in favour of Labour, will Andy Burnham call a general election before 2027? Kemi Badenoch thinks he might.

You are dreaming. They have no mandate to rejoin the EU in any shape.

If he calls a GE it will most likely be to able to increase taxes.

Or have you taken Burnham literally when he said he wants to reinstate hope?

Edited

Doesn't need a mandate, you do what is best for the country.

I'm not sure it's even possible to have a GE before 2027 now. Local returning officers have to set things up, hire counters, book polling stations etc.

And in a few months it will be Christmas, no-one will call a GE after mid-November as people are too distracted.

Good.

Because we are stronger as a large group, the UK is weak and America is taking full advantage of it.

How are we 'stronger' as a large group when none of the countries in the Eurozone are growing? The regulatory burden the EU is imposing on AI will slow that growth further. And joining the Euro would likely not benefit the UK economy and leave us more open to economic shocks.

We would rejoin on way worse terms than we left. It's a pipe dream.

The EU has not stood still in the decade since we have left. They have not prospered.

I’m expecting next May

That then gives him 5-6 months before the next expected fiscal event and avoids campaigning over winter.

… so another year of investment and the housing market on hold.

Nice one Andy.

I have no inside knowledge but of course it's possible. And Johnson called one in December.

Not in 2026 but possibly in 2027.

@FullOfLemons ”… so another year of investment and the housing market on hold.”

This country needs a housing crash then boom.
As it stands now, housing will do nothing for the foreseeable future.

Maybe AI needs regulation, I'm telling you now if it continues we won't need teachers, legal executives, middle class jobs will vanish and factory jobs won't exist, neither will manufacturing....what exactly will we do

Stable prices are needed.

Neither higher or lower prices are helpful.

Without that builders don’t build and people don’t move. This pulls down growth in the wider economy.

Would you spends on materials and workers to build housing, if you don’t have a good idea what you are going to sell it for, and thus potential profit in 12-18 months time ?

Unless you are contest on the apprentice / have no business acumen, I’d say probably not !

Maybe but that’s an entirely separate argument.

I don't see why anyone would at the moment. Labour has a good majority so it seems pointless to mess with that, which it would, plus people are sick and tired of extra elections.

Despite what the Mail or Express have bleated every blimming week since Labour were elected, while the government has been disappointing and drab, I don't see any sign that it is 'in chaos' or 'disarray' or is otherwise some kind of out-of-control disaster. There's nothing to be settled or helped by another election.

An interesting range of views so far. Sadly, there are a few posters who want the thread to be another Brexit debate. Maybe the can move to the Brexit board.

I think Burnham will not call an election until the last possible moment. Approximately three years from now.

If taxes are raised in the next budget, people will have had time to forget them by the time the next election comes around.

Conservatives won in 1983 with a large majority. It kept them in until 1997.

Labour won in 1997 with a large majority. It kept them in until 2024.

Based on that, I don’t think there will be a general election until 2029.

I agree, wholeheartedly. I don’t think there will be a GE until the last possible moment.

Almost certainly not, however feverishly the political journalists speculate about it. Burnham has only just become PM. He has a massive majority & the support of almost all Labour MPs. This allows him to do pretty much whatever he wants and there doesn’t have to be an election until summer 2029.

Why would he gamble & risk throwing his majority away unless he had a decisive lead in the polls? All current polling suggests a hung parliament is the most likely result of an election. Even if Labour ends up,as the biggest party, he would have to cobble together a coalition with the Lib Dems & probably others.

I think he needs to be more clear in what he intends to do. However, he may be saving that for the next budget. Hopefully it goes along the lines:

The problems UK is facing are……

The solutions are…….

The cost of implementing the solutions will be….

The implementation costs will be funded by…..

Never in all my years have I seen a government “hampered” by their mandate. They’ll diverge as they like and I expect we’ll see some of this in the upcoming budget. The only pledge they’ll be too scared to break is no tax rises on working people. They’ve already scaled back on public ownership.

They broke that pledge already!!

Zero chance of that happening with any of the current politicians.

sandwalk · Yesterday 22:48

He would have to be pretty sharpish, it's almost October and there surely wouldn't be one in December. So I think not

Thecows · Yesterday 22:53

Rejoin the EU and I'd vote Labour in a heartbeat and I had been leaning towards Tory again
