John Healey, who quit as Keir Starmer's defence secretary last month, has been pictured walking up Downing Street - is he about to be reinstated as Defence Secretary, I wonder.

Ed Miliband and Shabana Mahmood also photographed walking up Downing Street together - but we still don't which positions they will be given in Cabinet.

Who's out so far:

Jo Stevens out as Welsh secretary.

Darren Jones sacked from cabinet.

Liz Kendall no longer science and technology secretary.

Quite a few are out so far.

Reeves
Lammy
Steve Reed (resigned with a slightly cutting letter)
Peter Kyle
Lord Hermer who was AG

James Timpson and Patrick Valance have also resigned their roles.

Twiglets1 · 20/07/2026 17:53

Rachel Reeves is out as chancellor. She was apparently offered a different job in the Cabinet but declined.

David Lammy has gone as Justice Secretary - just weeks before the new Sentencing Act 2026 is supposed to be enacted.

From September, thousands more inmates are set to be released to create more space in our prisons. More criminals will serve sentences in the community.

Mahmood and Miliband arrive in Downing Street as Andy Burnham to begin appointing cabinet

Meanwhile Rachel Reeves is out as chancellor and David Lammy is no longer the deputy prime minister, as the new PM forms his top team.

Alas Milliband is there. John Healey would be good as Chancellor as then he could up the spending on defence.

downhillfromhier · 20/07/2026 17:54

He really needs to reassure the stock markets and stop keeping them waiting.

Oh that’s a shame re Patrick Vallance

Brightlittlecanary · 20/07/2026 17:55

11 of them out so far. So 50 percent.

reeves must have been offered a shite job.

Twiglets1 · 20/07/2026 17:55

So far I'm happy with who is out and who is being offered a big job. Hope that John Healey is reinstated as Defence Secretary.

I really hope he doesn’t make milliband chancellor.

Perhaps she would rather spend more time with her family.

thestudio · 20/07/2026 17:55

Miliband for foreign?

downhillfromhier · 20/07/2026 17:55

Doubt it. And really doubt anyone would say that about a man who quit.

That would be disastrous if he does.

Yes that would be genuinely cheering.

hattie43 · 20/07/2026 17:56

I’m going to say
John Healey Chancellor
Ed Milliband Foreign secretary ( get him out the way )
Shabana stays where she is

I am sure her kids will have not had much of her attention over the last 2 years. It must be a full on job.

Many male politicians have given the 'spend more time with my family' reason upon resigning.

Twiglets1 · 20/07/2026 18:00

Hilary Benn out as Northern Ireland Secretary

Sad to see Timpson gone-but I suspect it reflects his frustration with his role.

mynameiscalypso · 20/07/2026 18:01

I assume as Healey has gone in first, he’s due for one of the big three jobs, along with Mahmood and Miliband. Will be interesting to see how it shakes out between them, could go any way I think.

They have indeed.

Funny how when their career is going well they prefer to choose to spend less time with their family.
