He has a plan. So great to know.
Be even better to know what it is.
Is it cunning?
Does it involve turnips?
Will he present time team when Labour is annihilated in 2029?
Wow the suspense😀

“If we care about our children”, as you say in your post above, then we wouldn’t make choices that would over burden future generations with massive debt. And let’s face it, Labour governments love to spend and splash the cash don’t they?

Absolutely, we don’t want to burden them with debt, hence the need to remove the triple lock. Splashing the cash can be foolish it can also be Keynesian, depends how it’s done.

To be fair making rough sleeping illegal is really taking the fight to Reform.

I remember reading a few years ago that 60% of rough sleepers in London were foreign nationals (Eastern Europeans + non-EU) - many of whom had no recourse to public funds. Is Burnham going to give them all benefits and housing?

Well I don't know why you're stunned over my reply because I know that full well but I wasn't writing a diatribe about all the reasons for homelessness.

I was referring to the many, many people who can't afford to set up home on their own, can't find a place to rent even if they earn what should be enough, can't split from a partner they don't want to live with for lack of housing opportunities, live in places that aren't fit to live in, sofa surf, are living in hotels at council expense etc etc etc.

And I would fix that before I would fix the other things on the list of the post which was being referred to.

And I'd bet my bottom dollar that having been in Manchester for years, Burnham is well aware of the issues too and was talking about the same homelessness as I am, lack of housing.

And if you think homelessness can't be fixed no matter how much money is thrown at it anyway, why are you ranting about it?

Coming back to this because on the news tonight Burnhams pledge is to end rough sleeping, not end homelessness. I'm sure he intends to do both if her can, but homelessness is a matter of lack of houses of the right type at the right price in the right place. Rough sleeping is, as the person whose post i answered, a different thing altogether.

Anyone who walks around in Manchester knows that he has not cracked rough sleeping even in the city he had control of.

Imdunfer · 20/07/2026 20:14

Oh the delicious irony. Mr Net Zero Milliband is now Foreign Secretary and his carbon footprint is going to be quite literally sky high!

sunshinesuzey · 21/07/2026 08:17

BIossomtoes · 20/07/2026 13:16

He didn’t say anything about making it illegal.

So where is he going to put them all (assuming they want to stop rough sleeping) ?

In beds I suspect. Beds really don't take up much space.

As a thought. If it was someone else saying no more rough sleeping, we are bringing back poor houses, do you think there would be space then ?

We don't know for sure what his plan is. But the way I see it, not having people sleep rough has got to be a good target.

But we do need to know what his plans are and we are right to question them, surely?

He said the same thing in Manchester and initially there was success but the figures have crept back up again. There must be reasons but we are not given any details by Burnham.

We just have to wait. He has national power now.

I have always believed that increased power should come with increased responsibility.

I think it is a given that he has increased responsibility. I expect he has done his "letters of last resort" to the Trident Sub Captains.

I just got out my binoculars to see if I could spot any over at Devonport!

They sail from Faslane. Supposed to be one at sea at any time. I was wondering how they get the new letter to the Captain at sea. Radio transmit it ? Like in the film "Crimson Tide" ?

Why should we? We don't vote people in on the basis they will let us know what their plans are later.

Eviebeans · 21/07/2026 12:13

I very much agree with the need for more council housing- that would have a huge impact on families and others needing good quality, reasonably priced and stable accommodation- however I see that Angela Rayner is again supposed to be driving this so I don’t have high hopes for this to happen

Yes if it actually goes to people already here on the waiting list but I doubt this will happen

How will housing be allocated to people not on the housing list then ?

Because that is the system. Want social housing, go on the list.

But you said you doubt that will happen. So how will housing be allocated then ?

suburburban · 21/07/2026 13:40

I think it will go to people from overseas as they seem to jump the queue

How does that even work then ? Do you think if the government build houses, they then send people to far off lands to ask random people "Want a house ?".

If that was happening, I am sure the Daily Mail would soon find out.

Belittling people doesn’t help. You are avoiding having empathy for the injustice that British people feel, by being snarky and mean.

if any other nationality complained of feeling marginalised youd not dare to sneer. But Brits say it and you sneer. Disgusting.

I’m fortunate as I don’t need one but Government immigration policy has led to a shortage of housing however much they pretend it doesn’t

Huh ? This is an anonymous forum. Nobody here know what nationality posters are.

And why is it belittling, snarky and mean to ask a poster how a system works when they say , quote: " Yes if it actually goes to people already here on the waiting list but I doubt this will happen" ?

Am I not allowed to explore and ask the PP what that means ?

And if that is true, surely it would be all over the press ?

And I see the poster has replied with, quote:" They might as well".

Right, so it appears to be a totally unsubstantiated claim, and if I challenge that claim I am belittling, snarky and mean. No wonder we have such a big misinformation problem.

Right. So you can't explain how what you said would work then.
