He has a plan. So great to know.
Be even better to know what it is.
Is it cunning?
Does it involve turnips?
Will he present time team when Labour is annihilated in 2029?
Wow the suspense😀

Perhaps he could do something about council housing being occupied by people that don’t work, rather than just build more houses. Tbh I don’t understand why we have a significant swathe of unemployed somalians living in free housing, in the UK. Could someone explain why they aren’t just sent home?

Do you object to anybody that doesn't work occupying council housing or just Somalians? If it's everyone, where would you plan to house British non-working people?

He's has really just said he is not going to tell us the plan until later in the year??????????

He wants summer off!
Why work when you've got a lovely pay rise. (Actually it might not be a pay rise, as he was taking money for PCC and Manchester Mayor.)

BIossomtoes · 20/07/2026 14:01

Looks like it. I am too.

Ok, I’ll clarify what I meant what in that it’s not a literal coup, I understand the process was legally allowed. I’m talking about the way Burnham was put into power which to me looked like organised internal power struggle, which is why I think the comparison is fair even if it was technically legal. I know it’s our system but I didn’t like the way it was done.

He’s not having the summer off. He’s about to embark on a tour of the UK to listen to voters. He donated 15% of his mayoral salary to a homelessness charity.

The Guardian says Burnams plan is to end homelessness…
i want homelessness to end too but perhaps theremay be other things that could be prioritised…. Cost of living crisis, NHS, youth unemployment, climate change just to name a few

Marmalademorning · 20/07/2026 14:17

My predictions of some of the changes are:

Higher taxation for most working people (despite his promise to help us all with the cost of living) - Basically, anyway they can think of to introduce more tax to prop up the benefits bill.

Reform/ replace Council tax - penalising those living in the south (regardless of their income).

Reform inheritance tax (so we end up being able to leave even less to our kids).

Scrap the triple lock (Labour seems to really dislike pensioners).

Basically his solution to all our problems will be higher taxation and more borrowing.

In other words all the things he said he intends to address an hour ago in Downing Street.

I’d choose to end homelessness over climate change any day.

Steve Rotherham/Liverpool followed much the same approach as Andy Burnham/Manchester, they wrote a book (Head North) together about their policy approaches.

I didn't know that. Thank you. They got a lot right but it was done with private investment and I'm not sure how he's going to replicate that "in every postcode" in the climate which now exists. Both of them achieved what they achieved under Tory governments. I hope he can, though.

I think the Somalian’s are a very specific problem. They don’t work, they live in free housing, they commit crime. How did they get here, why can’t we send them back home? Let’s admit they are unwelcome guests we can’t afford.

one problem at à time, this is surely an easy one.

I wouldn't put any of those above satisfying the first two basic needs of humanity, food and a roof over your head.

If you’re refering to homeless people I’m stunned anyone doesn’t know that these people are not all homeless due to lack of facilities, often it is due to extreme mental health issues that they will not accept help for.

ending homelessness is far from just food and shelter, far far from it, and I’m all appalled Andy burnham is so fucking clueless he doesn’t know it. Because no matter how much money you chuck at it, this is a problem that will not go away,

I think they have more right to be there than people from overseas

does any other country house people for free from abroad to the extent that we seem to and not insist that they work

Still not answering the question. Ever thought about becoming a politician?

Edit: Ignore me, only just noticed you're a different poster.

Well I don't know why you're stunned over my reply because I know that full well but I wasn't writing a diatribe about all the reasons for homelessness.

I was referring to the many, many people who can't afford to set up home on their own, can't find a place to rent even if they earn what should be enough, can't split from a partner they don't want to live with for lack of housing opportunities, live in places that aren't fit to live in, sofa surf, are living in hotels at council expense etc etc etc.

And I would fix that before I would fix the other things on the list of the post which was being referred to.

And I'd bet my bottom dollar that having been in Manchester for years, Burnham is well aware of the issues too and was talking about the same homelessness as I am, lack of housing.

And if you think homelessness can't be fixed no matter how much money is thrown at it anyway, why are you ranting about it?

Inheritance tax allows you to pass on £500,000. Do you really think that is a small amount, cos it would be pretty life changing for me.

Unfortunately, the triple lock will have to go if we care about our children. Those of use over 60 have benefited significantly due to previous economic circumstances, I’m happy to support young people who are struggling in a harsh economy.

Although, I’d prefer a tax on extreme wealth.

This is silly. A PM barely gets any holiday, they work constantly. The only one who has ever holidayed is Johnson. Truss doesn't count as so short, but even she was in the office pretty much every day.

Burnham is definitely not having summer off, and you know that really.

Hurrydash · 20/07/2026 15:14

His plan so far (apart from banishing homelessness - which doubled in Manchester in the last 4 years, graphic above) seems to be to blame Margaret Thatcher who became PM nearly 50 years ago

This is an excellent idea. Just what the country needs.

And if it doesn’t work he can blame Clement Atlee for setting up the welfare state!!

Awe inspiring first speech.

Thank you for your clarity. You have put this very well and I agree. It was a very orchestrated plan with Burnham's close associates that had been going on for over a year before one of them stepped down in a very safe seat. I think it was very undermining.

I got told off in a thread yesterday for asking for this type of clarity, what a civilised exchange😉. I can see how many people would think this is undermining of democracy. It will be interesting to see, if (big if) he is a success if people forget about the way he came to the office.

For me, I have to acknowledge what I see as the truth. My own integrity is more important to me than which side, or middle, of the political debate I sit on. On an international level, he is my PM and represents this country so has my support.

upinaballoon · 20/07/2026 16:34

Will lots of council houses involve the compulsory purchase of excellent arable land? Me? I lived in a council house in the 1950s but I wouldn't be half-surprised that the farmer who owned the land was compelled to sell it. Yes, there would be compensation but it probably didn't cover the future years which might have brought in far more than the compensation which was paid just the once.
There are two or more sides to every story.
I do think it would be good for some government-owned housing to be built and I do wish that more had been built in the last 30 years to replace the ones which were being sold off under the 'right to buy' scheme.

“If we care about our children”, as you say in your post above, then we wouldn’t make choices that would over burden future generations with massive debt. And let’s face it, Labour governments love to spend and splash the cash don’t they?
