He has a plan. So great to know.
Be even better to know what it is.
Is it cunning?
Does it involve turnips?
Will he present time team when Labour is annihilated in 2029?
Wow the suspense😀

The right to buy scheme was first proposed by Labour in their 1959 manifesto, but they did not win. It was eventually passed when Mrs Thatcher became prime minister.

It was sly move by Thatcher as rent would be paid to tenants if they became unemployed, but mortgages would not. Hence, it discouraged strikes and indirectly forced people to work.

Is that such a bad thing?

what went wrong

What went wrong was that Thatcher would not allow councils to replace housing stock they had sold off. This reduced the supply of affordable rental accommodation and voila, this is where we are now.

The people who bought them did very well though

mass immigration has had an effect on social housing anyway and even if they hadn’t been sold off the immigrants would still be given priority

Will he get more mumsnet threads than Starmer?

pointythings · 19/08/2026 20:23

Impossible to tell. It really depends on how 'colourful' UK politics get. If you knew anything about the PM threads, you would know they range far beyond just the PM.
