What he has outlined so far sounds really expensive at a time the country is broke. I agree with massive council house building programme. Nationalization, I just don’t see how this is the big solution to the country’s problems and it will be fantastically expensive - you can’t just take them back. They are owned by private companies and will need to be bought. I’m not convinced the public sector can run them better ( I work in the public sector) and I don’t like the idea of future power strikes from what may become union heavy public sector workers. ( I remember them from the 70s).

He seems to have lots of very expensive ideas, but hasn’t explained how to fund them.

That's a bit mean given that he only starts tomorrow. I'm not a natural Labour voter and even I'm prepared to hear him out.

Who knows, he may be able to turn it around. He has charisma and may be able to persuade Labour MPs to cut the benefits bill which has to happen.

If he can't manage that, Labour will lose the next GE.

He only has two years which is nothing like sufficient time to make the sweeping changes he envisages. He seems astonishingly naive about this. He probably has time to make changes to one or maybe two key policy areas. The machinery of government and the civil service moves very slowly. I predict that he’ll spend half his time fending off opposition from both inside and outside Labour. There will be a few scandals along the way. He will not secure a second term and Reform will dismantle everything he does after the next GE.

So they obviously see something in him. I just hope he understands basic economics. It's not a lot to ask.

@peaceatnight Who has the money to build the houses? What sites are ready to go? Councils are in no position to build anything. So as usual, it’s a wish list and no detail.

There’s actually views being openly discussed that the shortage is down to council house sales, under used rooms and the better off refusing to buy when some rents are so cheap they are laughable and the tenants laugh all the way to the bank. Yet we want to cover the land with more homes when we refuse to manage what we have.

There is also the issue of lifetime tenancies that cause significant problems for those needing homes. People are not staying poor for life. Once they get a property, it’s a way of life and they are then lost to other families. We need to get much tougher on who gets what and who is allowed to continue with a significantly below market rate rent. Overall though the idea of some massive building programs is for the birds.

We used to buy construction material from the Ukraine, but they will need it for their own reconstruction.
Where are the builders going to come from? Can’t import them
anymore, and if we did then most of the houses will be needed fur them
and their families.

He’s said he wants to take us back to the 70s, something like that. Well I remember the 70s ( I’m old) & have no wish to repeat them thank you. Continual strikes, 3 day week, blackouts, 15% mortgage rate (17% for a short time). Coming home from work to spend the evening in a cold, dark house, evening meal cooked on a camping stove. Rubbish uncollected, bodies unburied. Anyone thinking it was a good time is viewing the past through rose coloured glasses.

Nonsense. The Tories were far worse and almost destroyed education, social care and NHS.
Labour are so much better as they are working for the majority of the working population. High earners (including those middle class who say they aren’t rich because they have no idea of how the average person lives) will always prefer Tories because they are the party of the upper class.
