Good on Kemi!

I'm no fan of Kemi Badenoch, but I'm even less of a fan of Robert Jenrick, and I'm rather delighted to see that she has sacked him and withdrawn the whip before he could jump to Reform.

She has definitely had the last laugh here. He must be spitting bullets!!

What would there be to talk about. Hmm..

The alleged offences carried out by the rent boys relate to three fires including one at Starmer’s house in Kentish Town, and another involving a car previously owned by him but sold. A third fire was at a house also linked to Starmer.

Normally the press would be all over this for months. Interesting it's been kept fairly low key.

There’s literally nothing to report. The accused men pleaded guilty in November and go to trial in April. And there’s been no suggestion in any media outlet that they’re rent boys.

It can't be right. You don't have a trial if you plead guilty. Unless it's a typo for not guilty, or they've had a very delayed sentencing.

You’re right it’s a typo. They pleaded not guilty.

Thatcher if I recall, sold off utility companies so they apparently created profit, but not for consumers but share holders of water, electric, gas etc. End of manufacturing in this country too. Decimated communities and lives and they haven't recovered. Levelling up, cheers Boris for absolutely f all. If you remember the failure of governments under Labour and never the positives then this might help.

Austerity wasn't we're in this together Cameron was it? More like your communities will struggle to recover but I couldn't care less, May, Truss, Johnson and the Tory in waiting Farage. I encountered him once when he was leader of Ukip, nasty, cruel man. Cheer up eh, things can only get better.

Its not exploiting people. Its weighing up the cost of the increased ENI and the potential for vexatious claims or for getting the new rules wrong or for employing the wrong person for the job and then getting stung. And this is before an employee may have settled in and made any positive contribution.

So an employer may just think its not worth the cost or potential hassle and just not employ anyone new. Its their choice not to hire. Which, if you are a young person with no track record to prove you are a good potential employee, is not great.

So they don't want to grow their business then? thats what your saying and these are exactly the same arguments put forward by the Tories in the 2000s when the NMW was first introduced too.

Its too early to say what the long term impact is, Tariffs and AI will have impacted employers decisions, taxes raised will also improve growth too, assuming Trump doesn't fuck up the world first...

The 'right always complain about taxes but want higher spending, so we had Badenoch moaning about lack of Defence spend... no clue on she would pay for it.
Please don't say growth, she was in Govt for 5 years, in which time we had tiny growth, zero growth and a recession in the last 12 months of Tory Govt.

She also back Truss "100%" not sure if she has deleted that tweet.... good judge of economic policy and character (Jenrick) - is your Kemi...

Zero evidence, just slurs, no boundaries... with a nod and wink.

Yes. If you can't afford to grow your business by employing more people which RR has made it more expensive to do, then you can't grow your business. As an employer myself that is the sad situation Labour has put me in.

I think Kemi wants more spending on defence which seems sensible in the current climate. But less on benefits for working age people rather than Labours expansion of the welfare state. Seems logical. Better to defend us against invasion, because I doubt the Russians will be interested in our welfare.

Yes I'm sure you're right. I expect none of it is true. Just an unlucky coincidence.

(Not commenting on Starmer's son as I hadn't heard that before).

To be fair I don’t think tweets age well for any politician. Quite a few of Starmer’s have arisen while in opposition criticising the Tory government for not ‘holding Donald Trump to account for his actions.’

See also David Lammy on jury trials and Rachel Reeves on the economy.

I think commenting constantly on social media is a distraction for politicians and they should stay away from it.

But thats the point... you ve made it perfectly.

She was in Govt for 5 years, Welfare boomed under her watch, she supported Truss, who cost the country 100s of billions, still paying for it.

Her cuts in Welfare? So people will come off disability benefits, onto unemployment ones.... where is the saving?

But even worse is the country needs around 60billion on defence, maybe 100 billion, her Govt cost the country 29 billion in a failed railway - 5 billion off Welfare doesn't touch the sides....

Your arguments on additional costs of employment, are the same as those trotted out over the introduction of the NMW - higher NMW or ENI hasn't stopped my friends company from growing, what is restricting growth is a lack of skills - who is responsible for that?

Again, you make the slur... despicable.

Ah nothing like a bit of good ole Whataboutery!

Perhaps if the Tories had held him to account when he was less powerful and had an eye on a 2nd term, we wouldn't be in this mess...

Badenoch backed the economic policies of Truss, that should show us all the measure of the woman.

Crikey, so combative. It wasn't intended to be whataboutery, more an observation on social media and how no politician whatever their stripes tends to always come out well.

When you say 'we wouldn't be in this mess', do you mean the Tories somehow had some magical power to keep DT out of office for a second term?

Crikey? but ok for you to trot out Whataboutery on Starmer's previous tweets etc.
Instead of dealing with Badenoch supporting the most damaging budget ever, its the substance of the tweet that matters, not her use of SM.

The Tories bowed down to Trump in office and backed, supported and advised on all 3 of his campaigns, inc Kemi Badenoch.

Her judgement is very suspect.

Well, I can see someone has started Sunday in a good mood. No whataboutery from me, I don’t deny Kemi’s tweets have aged badly but all politicians tweets age badly. It’s why the public no long has faith in politicians anymore because no one seems to stick to things they say. And I include all parties in that. I’m sure even the sainted Zack Polanski would regret some of things he’s posted if he ever got into office because he wouldn’t be able to stand by them.

And how is the Tories treatment of Trump any different to what Starmer is doing now? I mean, I understand why he’s doing it, it’s called diplomacy. I’m sure it was called diplomacy when the Tories were doing it. Much as the Greens and the Lib Dem’s would love Kier to have his Love Actually moment.

Badenoch is well suited to opposition. She wouldn't be doing half as well if Starmer did give her new ammunition with his competence every week. Every week there front bencher who needs his "full confidence" or any other policy that they they announced on a whim that needs a u-turn. Being leader of the opposition is one of the easiest jobs in the world at the moment.

It will be interesting to see how she does in opposition to Farage, which seems to be where we are heading.

Nice attempt at gas lighting but no cigar!

More whataboutery on Starmer and Polanski now... the Cons supported his election campaigns, which Labour have never done & have bowed down to & supported Trump whether in or out of office, thats the difference.

I bet there are plenty around the world who now wish Harris had won.

& by the way, i have consistently said offering a state visit to Trump was madness, that went way beyond "diplomacy" but was widely supported inc by Tories.

UK needs to align v quickly with the EU, how Starmer handles this, could determine his legacy a lot more than expenses or WFA.

Gaslighting. I’ve heard it all now. Grin

BIossomtoes · 18/01/2026 09:04

My objection to the state visit was that it happened far too soon. The smart move would have been to dangle it as a carrot for good behaviour for a couple of years and give it to him towards the end of his term.
