How long will Lammy remain as Foreign Secretary?

It looks like Trump will be the next President, and Lammy has been strongly critical of him.
Will he be put into another post, I wonder. But then, if he IS shifted, the optics aren't good on it.
I'm just posting to see if anyone else is thinking this.

Let’s hope Lammy isn’t sidelined to manage the Commonwealth relationship.

That could prove costly.

Blimey

Yeh maybe not.

He's been pretty forgiving to Vance.

Until he served a purpose.

Starmer serves none.

EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime · 06/11/2024 15:59

Some of the usual hardcore LW posters have been awfully quiet today.

One wonders why….

Lammy makes stupid comments but the Trump team actually like him. Unlike Cameron, he listened. Sure he doesn’t agree but he was attentive and that counts. I doubt he’ll get the boot.

In the same way Trump liked Kim Darroch you mean?

This country is an inconsequential small island in the North Sea, our government is irrelevant to Trump. The special relationship is history.

This is incorrect. We have 10,000 US troops based in the UK and our intelligence services work closely together and are highly valued.

but the Trump team actually like him

What do you base that on?

KoalaCalledKevin · 06/11/2024 16:16

He was appointed when there was a reasonable chance of Trump winning, so it would be odd for it to be a dealbreaker now.

tinydynamine · 06/11/2024 16:18

when did it become acceptable for UK government ministers to openly support candidates in the elections of allied countries?

FGS.

Was Rayner appointed premised on a similar logic?

You give Starmer too much credit I think.

KoalaCalledKevin · 06/11/2024 16:25

@EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime it's not giving him credit if he does now get rid of him. In that case it's pointing out that he should have been able to predict this possibility but didn't.

I'm also not sure that thinking Starmer was aware of an upcoming US election is giving him that much credit. It's a very very low bar.

ipredictariot5 · 06/11/2024 16:26

I heard on CNN during the night that despite endlessly talking about enemies Trump is actually pretty forgiving. Absolutely Lammy should stay, it would be a bad thing if governments around the world start sacking people because of some presumed previous offence caused to Trump? What happens if he has a problem with our PM does he get to force the UK to have another election?

SugarIsHardtoAvoid · 06/11/2024 10:41

Oh sorry I was posting in good faith. I thought we were here to discuss what the actual government including David Lanmy has been doing to anticipate today’s seismic US election result for global politics. My bad. Crack on.

Posting to say thanks for that link I found it interesting!

Oh dear
So what are basing your hatred of Lammy on?
So. Tell me where I displayed 'hatred'
Please

You've taken the time to post a thread on that you believe he should go... based on what?
Lammy had an extended meeting with Trump, so it went well, why drag up the past like this?

Plenty of Western Leaders and politicians have called out Trump, Macron being one in a long line.

Park24 · 06/11/2024 18:07

You don't get to call someone a neonazi publicly, especially someone with an ego like Trump, and think there won't be consequences.

Lammy is a liability - politics includes diplomacy and his crass comments will prove to be very costly. Hopefully KS will reshuffle him.

Trump and Farage are genuine friends - Farage won't be slow to share his thoughts on Lammy and the current government with Trump. This is going to have much bigger consequences for KS and his cabinet than just some awkward conversations.

Tbf Musk won't help the UK either after all that X stuff

Based on what Lammy - now Foreign Secretary- has said.
Easy

Why should he be moved for thinking what most of the world think. Didn’t Johnson say embarrassing things about Trump before he became PM?

Yes. One of the things he said was:

"Crime has been falling steadily both in London and in New York - the only reason I wouldn't go to some parts of New York is the real risk of meeting Donald Trump"

I think starmer and Lammy are in a bit of a quandary now. Lammy has spread lies about Trump, Starmer sent people over to campaign for Harris.

They are so dumb

What lies has he spread? I’m not aware of any.

cardibach · 11/11/2024 18:29

LetThereBeLove · 06/11/2024 09:43

Lammy is utterly useless as Foreign Secretary. The fact that Labour openly pinned their hopes (and taxpayers money?) to Kamala means the end to the so called special relationship we had with the US. Starmer needs to rethink his strategy, if he has one at all. Getting rid of Lammy would be a good start.

Edited

Don’t be silly. Labour always side with Democrats, they are on the same side of the political divide. Every President knows that. And as has been pointed out, Trump has met with both Starmer and Lammy and been positive about it. He’s also got a VP who used to be vocally critical of him. He doesn’t care. He’ll make deals if they benefit him and not otherwise, so who you send to talk to him is a bit irrelevant

I agree. Lammy couldn't get a discount at a car boot sale.

Trump will only do things that advantage Trump. If he’s determined to put tariffs on everyone, there’s nothing anyone will be able to do to dissuade him.
