How long will Lammy remain as Foreign Secretary?

It looks like Trump will be the next President, and Lammy has been strongly critical of him.
Will he be put into another post, I wonder. But then, if he IS shifted, the optics aren't good on it.
I'm just posting to see if anyone else is thinking this.

Ha! I did think this too. I suppose it depends on how much of an influence on a Trump administration the Labour govt hopes to have. They won't have much, whoever is in the job, but they'll have zero with Lammy in it. Trump doesn't take over until the 20-something of January, so they have time to ponder on it.

Nordione1 · 06/11/2024 08:01

Keir would be absolutely mad to keep him. So, based on current decision making standards, I expect David Lammy to stay as FS.

bombastix · 06/11/2024 08:06

Lammy was a poor pick for FS from the outset. Too strident and not enough diplomacy. His comments are tactless. Nothing to do with the brief, it’s him.

However, he is well connected. That moment when Starmer attended the d day celebrations and Sunak went home? Lammy got him the invite. So he’s hanging on for a while.

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 06/11/2024 08:06

Hard to say. I think this will be a real turning point, not only for the UK but also for the rest of Europe. Are we going to continue to align ourselves with the US no matter what, or are we going to try to chart a different course. There are massive risks either way...

RayonSunrise · 06/11/2024 08:11

Lammy's not the only one who's going to have a problem. The Tories have just voted a black woman to be leader - Trump may manage to be polite because she's politically sympathetic, but it's hard to imagine him warming to her in any way.

So the U.K. is out of step with the US both in government and opposition. And that's before we've even got to Ukraine, and war with Iran...

MrsLeonFarrell · 06/11/2024 08:16

Lammy met with the Trump campaign when he was over in the US and the press reports were that they were pleased because they felt he was really listening to them in a way David Cameron didn't when he was Foreign Secretary.

Who knows what will actually happen but I don't think it's an immediate cause for concern.

What are you saying here? Much of the US "minority"vote went to Trump.

ItIsBeginingToLookLike · 06/11/2024 08:29

He isn't a good UK politician, he has no skills for fostering good reactions on our behalf.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 06/11/2024 08:32

What’s Starmer got to do with it? You need to ask Lord Alli.

Alexandra2001 · 06/11/2024 08:38

Were you so concerned about the Trump May relationship? Boris has FS ? or is this just another "Lets have a go at Labour" thread?

Trump does whats good for Trump, he doesn't give a shiny shit about Lammy, Badenoch or anyone else.

The UK has little influence in the world & so far Lammy has done a good job.

or is it a race thing for you?

Sausagenbacon · 06/11/2024 08:44

or is it a race thing for you?
My God, mn posters really are dim. Or obsessed about Race.
The question put was not about Lammy being black. It's about his relationship with the future president of the USA, given previous remarks he has made. And given that he's Foreign Secretary.
It must be very tiring to have to respin posts.

It matters to the UK a lot. If Trump implements his projected trade policy that the chances are our economy is not going to grow to current projections. We are going to need the very best relationship with the US and I don’t think Lammy is the man for that.

Absolutely, Lammy’s colour has nothing at all to do with this, he described Trump as a neo nazi, Trump isn’t the most forgiving person, as doubtless many in the US will find, so Lammy may not be the best placed, but we may be surprised

I don't think it really matters who is foreign secretary. Trump makes decisions based on what he thinks is best for him. I don't think the UK figures much in his thinking.

ItIsBeginingToLookLike · 06/11/2024 08:55

I do think Trump likes the British Royal family as an institution and coming over to enjoy the pomp and ceremony. Those dealing with this require tact that Lammy lacks.

I suspect he will want another state visit with Charles and will use Harry in his negotiation.

hamstersarse · 06/11/2024 08:57

I think starmer and Lammy are in a bit of a quandary now. Lammy has spread lies about Trump, Starmer sent people over to campaign for Harris.

They are so dumb

Well no! But perhaps we might like a free trade agreement that cuts us out of his plans? David Lammy doesn’t strike me as the man to get that across

peanutbuttertoasty · 06/11/2024 09:02

It’s ok he’ll probably just get us nuked. No biggie.
Lammy is an absolute liability and has no place in government. Nothing to do with his race whatsoever. Entirely to do with his lack of brain cells.

Trade agreements would be great but I think we need to acknowledge just how insignificant the UK is on the world stage.

I disagree. For all Trump's issues, he's used to working with black people and he's had a lot of women in positions in his businesses and his first administration. The Cons and the Republicans have a lot of policy agreements and Kemi never plays up her race or her sex, she is not an identity politician at all. And then there's the obvious point that the Cons aren't in power and Trump's second term will have ended by the time we have another GE here.

Labour's real problem is that the British politician that's closest to Trump is Nigel Farage, who has been a vocal Trump supporter all along. He was present at Trump's final campaign rally and got a shout out.

BeansMeansBeans · 06/11/2024 09:08

Lammy is a bloody moron, so hopefully not long. I cringe that he is our FS

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/11/2024 09:08

He's very well connected with the EU, so I suppose it depends where our focus is. I doubt Trump is desperate to visit the UK (at least diplomatically), but we're so inconsequential now after Brexit that it doesn't really matter.

Really we need to focus on diplomacy with the EU and improving trade and bureaucracy, with a view to rejoining in the next 20 years.

Yes of course we are. We need them urgently because our economy is going to be totally battered by Trump’s policies. Britain is an international minnow

BIossomtoes · 06/11/2024 09:11

This country is an inconsequential small island in the North Sea, our government is irrelevant to Trump. The special relationship is history.

I'm no fan of any of the Royal Family, but I think it's highly unlikely Harry would be interested in helping Trump? And I can't see what help he would be with Charles?

I imagine they'll have to grit their teeth and endure a state visit at some point.
