Angela Raynor (and the Lock her Up! Brigade)

So Angela Raynor allegedly gave the wrong address to the post office or something, and underpaid her tax bill ten years ago by the cost of a big shop, and this gets the Tories excited. Meanwhile, one of their MPs is defrauding campaign funds and other folks, they know, and don't tell the police for three months. James Daly MP must be furious. Am I right?

Given today's events and confirmation of no wrong doing by the police, HMRC and Stockport Council, do you think James Daly MP will/should apologise for his dirty tricks campaigning?

HMRC declined to comment.

HMRC declined to comment.

Oh for goodness sake. HMRC aren't going to comment on someone's private financial affairs. Unless it is at the conclusion of a trial.

You just can't bear to have been proved wrong.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2024 20:08

HMRC do not comment on their tax probes.

I know - I was quite clearly responding to;

confirmation of no wrong doing by the police, HMRC ...

HMRC cannot comment on personal tax affairs - but a Labour source told the BBC it had concluded she did not owe tax on the sale of the house, after she asked them to look into the matter.

Yes - I read similar in the Financial Times;

In addition, a Labour insider said the UK’s tax authority had investigated and dropped the matter. “HMRC looked into this matter at Angela’s request and confirmed there is no capital gains tax liability, and no further action will be taken,” the person said.

A mysterious Labour insider - I would be happy to accept this if a senior Labour MP or Angela Rayner herself confirmed it in person - otherwise it's just spin.

Why did Greater Manchester Police say in the statement today that it had passed information from the inquiry to HMRC if Angela Rayner had already contacted HMRC herself and been given the all-clear? Doesn't add up to me.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2024 22:34

You don't believe her then?

Here you go, from the horse’s mouth, via The Telegraph:

Ms Rayner said she welcomed the conclusion of the police investigation and accused the Tories of using dirty tactics in reporting her to police. She added: “We have seen the Conservative Party use this playbook before – reporting political opponents to the police during election campaigns to distract from their dire record. The public have had enough of these desperate tactics from a Tory government with nothing else to say after 14 years of failure.”

Council house row was Tory attempt to smear me, says Angela Rayner

It will be like Hodges' 'argument', "why doesn't she just publish the full report and then we definitely will believe her"

@Clavinova I'd hate for you not to see this. I know you will be pleased to get the facts.

Poor Clav. Maybe she and Dan Hodges can console each other ?

A bit grim though that the assumption is she lived in a two-bedroomed house with her brother and three children - where did they all sleep? Or is it that she lived separately from her husband and children?

Very odd that she didn't update Labour HQ as well - their statement yesterday only mentioned the independent tax and legal advice she received - not the HMRC verdict which apparently came two weeks ago.

I wonder if Angela Rayner's ex-husband has some tax to pay instead? Why have Greater Manchester Police shared details of their investigation with HMRC? Is there another tax due (by any of the parties involved) that's not capital gains tax?

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

You just can't handle it at all, can you? She's been investigated twice and nothing found. Be an adult and get over it.

AmelieTaylor · 29/05/2024 20:30

I'm just sad she's Labour, well and she's in a different constituency! 😂. I really like her, but I'm not voting Labour. Mind you, matters very little who I vote for, it's a conservative win anyway.

Perhaps if the archangel Gabriel could come down and pronounce her innocent some people might finally accept there's no case to argue.

Nah probably not!

I thought married couples could only have one principal private residence for tax purposes between them. It seems likely that Rayner's ex-husband has some tax to pay.

I have - I'm too busy watching Keir Starmer squirm over Diane Abbott.

Are you suggesting the police and the HMRC got it wrong? You don't think they may have more info than you, or do you think you know more?

Thanks for the Tory graph post there. I love her even more now.
