Angela Raynor (and the Lock her Up! Brigade)

So Angela Raynor allegedly gave the wrong address to the post office or something, and underpaid her tax bill ten years ago by the cost of a big shop, and this gets the Tories excited. Meanwhile, one of their MPs is defrauding campaign funds and other folks, they know, and don't tell the police for three months. James Daly MP must be furious. Am I right?

For society to work, a civil society calls out the wrong of others based upon their actions and not on their politics.

Fair point. Why aren't the right-wing press calling for the prosecution of Tory MPs who have been accused of illegal activity?

For the same reason that this thread refuses to question if Angela has actually done any wrong, that her way of dealing with this issue has been woeful etc. It’s politics, this thread is no better than those papers that refuse to call out those Tory MPs

I find it shocking that people choose to see right or wrong according to which political party they support.

You see no wrong because you vote Labour. You only only see wrong in others that you don’t share political beliefs with.

For society to work, a civil society calls out the wrong of others based upon their actions and not on their politics. If she has done wrong, then people shouldn’t be afraid to admit that.

This won’t be decided by political will or support from the far left. It’s now a police matter.

This is just like the SNP supporters claiming a witch-hunt of Peter and Nicola, suddenly they’ve become quiet. I suspect you lot soon will too

Not only down to political party - the following was written by former CONSERVATIVE MP Nick Boles:

“Sir, Having served for nine years as an MP I know how low politicians can stoop when their backs are against the wall.
“But the Conservative attack on Angela Rayner is one of the most grotesque spectacles of hypocrisy I have witnessed.
“On one side is a billionaire Tory peer, Lord Ashcroft, and a multimillionaire Tory prime minister, Rishi Sunak, whose families have all avoided paying millions of pounds in the UK tax as beneficiaries of non-dom status and who live lives of luxury.
“On the other is a woman who grew up in poverty caring for her illiterate mother, who is now mother to a child who is registered blind, and who through her own guts and character has risen to be deputy leader of the Labour Party."

@Solgrass not true. People see no wrong because it's a dirty tricks campaign. Perhaps you cannot see that because of your own biases.

Dirty tricks?

well I’m sure some people would suggest her handling of the sale of her property and information given on the ER could be said as similar

She has either broken the rules or she hasn’t. It’s not difficult. If she has, then let the police deal with it. If she hasn’t, then let the police say so.

She has dealt with this really badly and refuses to see any wrongdoing. Even if no rules have technically been broken, it’s the optics of it all. It looks horrendous.

So you’re telling me a politician is talking politics?

bombastix · 21/04/2024 09:14

These rich insulated men cannot bear the idea that someone like Rayner will succeed without making the compromises and shabby deals they did. They hate her.

I hope she beats them. She is the best chance of pushing through some change to help those who are struggling. That is why they are so desperate to be rid of her. She makes them feel like shit.

That’s… not what happened though, is it?

(and to think they say this is a right leaning site 😉)

You're right, the optics look horrendous. Privileged, rich men hounding a working class woman for daring to step up and challenge them. Absolutely horrendous.

Privileged rich make didn’t make her sign the ER or sell her house and claim it was her primary residence.

She is a grown woman with her own agency.

You want this woman to govern, to be able to make decisive decisions for the good of the country? Well then you have to trust she is able to make her own decisions.

So it comes down to again, the decisions she has made with the sale of the house etc, have these followed the rules or not? That is what you should be concerned with.

ThreeFeetTall · 21/04/2024 09:32

If she did fiddle her taxes that at least points to some level of financial competence- compared to 'send me £5k at 3am because I'm trapped' from Tory MP Mark Menzies

dubsie · 21/04/2024 09:42

Typical Daily Mail hypocrisy and I call it filthy dirty tricks.

She's a normal working class girl and compare that to these Tory pigs all of which have been robbing us blind for over a decade.

Look at the latest attack on people on benefits, it's a appalling. No attack on those people not paying tax while the country grapples with record levels of debt.

Itradehorses · 21/04/2024 09:46

@Itradehorses

Honestly believe what I’m posting.

We live in a toxic, divided political atmosphere because people pick and choose their morals depending on the politics of the day. That goes for the right and that goes for the left.

People on this thread aren’t concerned if there has been any wrongdoing. There hasn’t been any questions at all. Don’t you find that strange?

It’s just straight to: witch hunt, privileged men etc

She’s a woman that wants to govern this country. She has either broken rules or she hasn’t. The quicker this gets resolved the better- because all it leads to is people taking sides purely to hit out at others.

Itradehorses · 21/04/2024 09:59

@Solgrass Please explain to us all then the alleged wrongdoing in detail, with particulars, and by reference to alleged charegable offences. James Daly MP couldn't. You've drunk the Cool Aid and are partaking in a witch hunt.

OP posts:
bombastix · 21/04/2024 10:02

The thing is that it is conspicuously a fishing exercise which goes, if not that offence, then this, if not that, then look at this. It's a kind grinding approach which I think a lot of people do not like and it is not normally what is done if you complain to the police. It looks tactical because it is, and any principles of good governance for the future look like a very secondary consideration

SnapdragonToadflax · 21/04/2024 10:05

Viviennemary · 21/04/2024 08:44

I've never liked her. But what a hypocrite. New revelations today seem to confirm the suspicions that she has been lying. Trouble is in her position and with her 'principles' she has to be extra vigilant.

So it's fine that Tories are shitbags, because we all know they don't have any principles? Ok then 😂

I’m not partaking in any witchhunt.

I haven’t any point said she has commited a crime or any actual wrongdoing.

what I have said is that it hasn’t been handled well and the optics don’t look good. That isn’t the same thing.

Im not investigating this issue, this is an issue for the authorities- be it police or HMRC.

They either find wrongdoing or they don’t. What doesn’t help is threads like these that pretend that there isn’t any info worth acting upon.

If you truly believe there’s been no wrongdoing, then you should have confidence she will be cleared. Then it looks bad for those who accused her of such. A win win surely?

There are, so far as I can see, no chargeable offences.

Electoral stuff is time barred and even if it were not the effect was nugatory so would not be charged.

Making a mistake about CGT isn't an offence. HMRC could have come after her but it's too late for that as well.

Oh come on. She lied. You know she lied. Everyone knows she lied.
The fact that the Tories have a multitude of lying scumbags is immaterial.

Why does she get a free pass? Cos she is Labour? Cos she is a woman? Cos she is working class? Does that mean lying and fiddling your taxes is ok as is it’s only a couple of thousand?

It’s disappointing as it’s her rather than expected for Tories but it doesn’t make it ok.

I think Sir Michael Take has a point Wink

Rob Roberts
Julian Knight
Imran Khan
Dave Warburton
Neil Parish
Chris Pincher
Peter Bone
Crispin Blunt
William Wragg
Mark Menzies

All Tory MPs caught up in sex scandals.

Yes, one could say ‘A Tory wall of shame’
But ONLY ONE wall.
Not TWO WHOLE HOUSES like Angela Rayner!

https://x.com/MichaelTakeMP/status/1781585521203945558

You forgot two others who I would argue bear some guilt. Graham Brady as chairman of the 1922 committee seems to have been silent and not acting behind the scenes, and Boris Johnson whose lack of action or sympathy led to his downfall.

Harvestfestivalknickers · 21/04/2024 10:19

I have never been so disappointed in the quality of our elected representatives as I am now. I can truly say I can't name one inspiring statesman/woman with a vision. Tony Blair was right in saying you have to be weird or wealthy to go into politics now.

ThreeFeetTall · 21/04/2024 10:23

Not when we have basically 2 parties to choose between it's not!

I’m with @Solgrass - and I’m a Labour voter. Any politician, regardless of what side of the House they sit on, should adhere to the law. I don’t care if it’s £50 or £50 million, I don’t want to be governed by people who line their pockets. Let the police investigate it and hopefully no wrongdoing is found.

I live under an SNP govt whose supporters claimed witch hunt and the ‘Tories are worse’ too.

Prawncow · 21/04/2024 10:31

I don’t have an opinion of her one way or another. It speaks to her honesty as a person that people have gone over her life and finances with a fine-tooth comb and all they can find is this.

Lord Ashcroft is the one pushing this. This is the man behind the David Cameron pig’s head allegation. As much as everyone (including me) wanted to believe that, it was obviously rubbish.

If it comes down to Angela Rayner and Lord Ashcroft, one of those people is credible and it’s not him.
