Angela Raynor (and the Lock her Up! Brigade)

So Angela Raynor allegedly gave the wrong address to the post office or something, and underpaid her tax bill ten years ago by the cost of a big shop, and this gets the Tories excited. Meanwhile, one of their MPs is defrauding campaign funds and other folks, they know, and don't tell the police for three months. James Daly MP must be furious. Am I right?

@Bromptotoo I'm expecting the police to
Open their investigation any day now.

A reminder that the police have already cleared Angela Rayner and that James Daly is refusing to say what she is being investigated for this time.

I'm not a legal expert but AFAIK the police cant 'clear' anybody. New information has come to light and there is still an investigation.

Bromptotoo · 21/04/2024 13:28

@Viviennemary said: I'm not a legal expert but AFAIK the police cant 'clear' anybody.

If a police investigation into whatever offences are supposed to have been committed finds absolutely nothing concerning criminal matters than I think that counts as being cleared.

Haha. I bet Ange is having a good laugh right now!

BIossomtoes · 13/05/2024 09:46

I imagine she’s spitting nails at the waste of police time for this mudslinging. I hope someone submits an FoI request to find out what it’s cost. And how many unattended burglaries there have been during the “investigation”.

From Wiki on Nadhim Zahawi

Sunak appointed Zahawi as Chairman of the Conservative Party and Minister without Portfolio on 25 October 2022 following his appointment as prime minister. On 29 January 2023, he was dismissed from the roles after Sunak's ethics adviser, Laurie Magnus, advised that he had breached the Ministerial Code by failing to disclose that he was being investigated by HM Revenue and Customs while he served in his previous position as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Johnson.

New information for Hodgson and the DM to get stuck into

https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/four-tory-mps-who-made

Hardly new information - it's a rehash of old information. The Daily Mail did 'get stuck in'. Maria Miller was forced to resign her position and Eleanor Laing had to fight off a deselection attempt. I also note that a Labour MP referred Maria Miller to the Met Police. How does this help Angela Rayner?

2013 [Eleanor] Laing, who was a shadow justice minister in 2009, was forced to pay back £25,000 in the MPs’ expenses scandal and saw off an attempt to have her deselected as MP for Epping Forest.

She won a vote of confidence from her local party after anger that she sold her state-funded second home for a £1million profit without paying capital gains tax by calling it her ‘primary residence’.

After an outcry, she offered to pay back the money as a ‘moral gesture’.

2014 As expenses row grows, Maria Miller insists she WILL pay capital gains tax on the London home she sold for £1.4million.

As for the Mirror article in your link - that's clearly a rehash of an article they published in 2019. They have forgotten to update David Tredinnick's age. His age is stated as 69 in both articles - he is 74 now. The Mirror's 2019 article also features three Labour MPs;

Ssshhhh don't tell my husband, but I like her. She makes mistakes, her education wasn't extensive I think. She's been stupid over that house fracas. But compared to male politicians labour and tory she's squeaky clean.

She's great to listen to most of the time, sometimes she gets it really wrong I admit. But she's passionate about her constituency.

I think she has enemies in her own camp.

In fact, they haven't updated Maria Miller's age either - she's 60 now, not 55.

I find it shocking that people choose to see right or wrong according to which political party they support.

You see no wrong because you vote Labour. You only only see wrong in others that you don’t share political beliefs with.

For society to work, a civil society calls out the wrong of others based upon their actions and not on their politics. If she has done wrong, then people shouldn’t be afraid to admit that.

This won’t be decided by political will or support from the far left. It’s now a police matter.

This is just like the SNP supporters claiming a witch-hunt of Peter and Nicola, suddenly they’ve become quiet. I suspect you lot soon will too

I agree. Angela Rayner seems to have not declared and paid tax that was due. She also got a full discount to buy a council house and made a large profit on it tho it seems she may not have been eligible as she didn’t live in it. That is wrong imo. Whether or not other people do things that are equally wrong is irrelevant. There is good evidence that she lied and defrauded the taxman.

im tired of people making excuses for wrongdoing because they support that party politically. You see so much of it with the SNP. Enough is enough. We need standards in public office

BIossomtoes · 14/05/2024 21:52

Is there? What is it and where can I find it?

Ive never liked her and it annoys me that she is so proud of herself and her achievements at the expense of the tax payer. And this latest stunt does her no favours. Let's stop sales of council houses but ok for me to have a second home. Tell lies about where she lived and make a fat profit and not pay the tax due. It totally sickens me. Puts me off voting Labour.

BIossomtoes · 14/05/2024 22:32

Her achievements aren’t at the expense of the taxpayer. She has every reason to be proud of them. She’s a fantastic role model for young women who are born without a single advantage.

What do you mean with this?

DuncinToffee · 14/05/2024 23:16

Make a fat profit

Would you sell your house a a loss or at the same price you bought it for @Viviennemary ?

Bromptotoo · 15/05/2024 08:29

@User2460177 she bought the house with the discount and sold it after the period during which the discount had to be repaid. It was occupied either by her or her brother. No breach of Right to Buy rules.

I think she was ill advised or made a mistake when the ex-council place was sold but I'd like to see evidence before condemning her for tax fraud. Making a mistake can lead to penalties for late payment but that's not about criminality and I think the time for that has passed.

justasking111 · 15/05/2024 08:31

We've had local councillors and council employees do a lot worse and no-one blinks. The police certainly.

This needs flashing up in neon because people keep rehashing the same false information to make Rayner look bad.

Given today's events and confirmation of no wrong doing by the police, HMRC and Stockport Council, do you think James Daly MP will/should apologise for his dirty tricks campaigning?

It was clearly a let's sling some mud and hope it sticks strategy. They clearly haven't learned that people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Ben Afolami refuses to apologise on SKy News

https://x.com/Haggis_UK/status/1795525571767865449

Sophie Ridge Would you like to apologise to Angela Rayner on behalf of the Tories?

Bim Afolami(Tory MP): No... I've got nothing else to add

SR: You'd quite a lot to add before?

BA: She could have put an end to this

SR: So it's Angela Rayner's fault then?

BA: Yes
