I’m calling the date of the next General Election

Thursday 24 October 2024.

My logic is thus:

  1. Tory MPs with kids in private school will want the election after the next academic year starts so that they will get an extra year VAT free while Labour gets its house in order. This is why Jeremy Hunt said the election wouldn’t happen until the Autumn.

  2. Tory MPs will want to take full advantage of the summer holidays/recess so they won’t want to campaign in July/August when they could be on a yacht instead.

  3. Term will start Week Commencing Monday 9 October at the latest. They will want to have a week to sort things out.

  4. So, 6 weeks after the Thursday of the week after 9 September is Thursday 24 October which fits in nicely with half term and they can go on holiday again.

    Place your bets.

Since Sunak is fabled for his honesty, integrity and professionalism I am sure that he will chose the date that is best for the country and no other considerations will enter his mind.

I agree with you almost unentirely.

If he's not too distracted by the important matters of state, such as colours of flags on football kits.

28th of January... that’s the date it has to happen by, I think they’ll hold off as long as they possibly can.

12 days before the US election? Nope. Never.

14 Nov. Allows Rishi to say he did 2 years as PM (appointed 25 Oct 2022) and is after the US election.

Not an issue, as long as everyone believe in THE PLAN as much as Rishi he will be PM for much longer than that.

I thought the money was on 10th October?

Do any of you listen to The News Agents podcast? They were joking on there that it won't be the week with 25th October as that is the anniversary of a Canadian election where the Tory party got only 3(!) seats and it was a bit ominous!

It's not going to be within 2 weeks of the US election in either direction - too much of a security concern. My money is on 17th October (we're taking bets at work - political sector)

I agree with your reasoning, although all your points apply to Labour MPs as well.
I wish they would call the election now. Labour are likely to be in for 2 terms so the sooner it starts the sooner it ends

I don't know why they don't just do it in may when the local elections are, save the British public a lot of money.

They will lose most of their seats in the local elections anyway.

Not forgetting all the students that won't be registered at their uni address by the deadline so they'll miss the vote, and thus, artificially bolster Tory share.

Gah! Didn’t think of that. Yet another reason why it will be early /mid October.

Seems sensible and quite possible. Also before the clocks go back, which depresses many people and makes them not want to bother to go out in the evening.

I think the Tories will remove Sunak after the Council Elections, crown a new Leader over the summer and go to the polls in October.

Would that allow enough time to sort out the wallpaper for the flat, and familiarise oneself with all the needs of the Number 10 pot plants?
