I think the whole "The Establishment are a secret conspiracy against the country" discourse is a.) nuts b.) destabilising democracy.
Seriously, who are "The Establishment"? It's a crazy, floating signifier, the content of which changes on who is doing the pointing, and who they are pissed off with this week: the people who run Channel 4; the urban elites, bankers, metropolitan liberals, everyone who lives in that there London, MI5 ...
It needs to be confronted, now, because it is delivering our democracy (which has worked pretty well, actually,) into the hands of a coalition of unelected, non-representative, neo-nativist, ultra-free-market nutters.
This, ultimately, is good only for those who would like to see the UK become a low-employment, weak-government, low-regulation tax haven.
