Politics

I'm not quite a frothing berserker but I am getting rather cross with our government messing with the good stuff.

Just off the top of my head:

  • Student fees
  • Public sector workers terms and conditions (otherwise known as moving the goal posts after the match has started)
  • Women (Report on Fawcett legal challenge result here)
  • Sure Start
  • NHS
  • Erosion of employment rights
  • Removal of EMA
  • Removal of universal child benefit
  • Unfair changes to DLA
  • Unfair changes to ESA assessment

I am getting more and more fed up that these decisions are being made to take away some of the things we should be most proud of and that took years to be achieved.

This thread is a safe haven for some ranting as I know some of us are feeling sick and tired of it all.

I think you're spot on Julia. We need to cooperate and collaborate.

If we can link everything together that's a powerful thing. I also think it's important we show the options so people can pick what they like. We should be a-political but united in our feeling that these cuts are very wrong and a step too far.

Yes, no point in starting new petitions if someone else has started one.

What do people want to write about as the first blog topic? Shall we just start at the top of the list and work our way down, or talk about TUPE or the pension cuts as they're relevant this week?

CardyMow · 01/12/2011 11:27

I'm totally technologically inept, but this thread has pushed me into the 21st Century kicking and screaming. On one of the previous pages it explains how to 'do' Twitter. I'll go back and find the instructions and tell you what page it's on. If I can do Twitter anyone can.

teaspoon the joke was on fb last night I c&p'd it here, so share away.

KateMiddIeton · 01/12/2011 11:45

I think the first blog post has to be who we are and what we are about.

I would really like it if we can be accessible for ordinary people. People like us who are The Unheard. Ooh, perhaps that's who we are: The fed up and the unheard?

I am keen to stay involved I looked at Te's simple guide to twitter, I will join but probably not until next week, have hectic few days ahead, so I will try to keep up with this thread.

I will try and get a look at JuliaScurr's links later they look good, anyone compiling the blog/fb page could maybe add useful/interesting links so they get shared?

KateMiddIeton · 01/12/2011 11:59

We should be a lynch-pin for people like us to accessing information.

Blog is a good start.

Perhaps we could do a page (can you do that on blogger) with links to other blogs and activists, like the ones that Julia linked to.

Needs a snappy group name. And a good first page/manifesto

MmeLindor. · 01/12/2011 12:34

What about a positive name/outlook.

There were a few posts on the Ed thread about expecting the opposition to actually oppose what the ConDems are doing, and to suggest solutions.

Not just "we are against this" but "why can't we do this".

Alternative politics, not opposition but solution.

LittleDonkeyhadaMadHairDay · 01/12/2011 12:47

Found you through a link from the Ed Milliband thread - thanks Kate. I have a Twitter account but under RL name, can I make an extra one under pseudonym? Happy to write blog posts on ATOS, DLA and disability in general. Great to find this thread.

Garlic I messaged you my freshly set up gmail account.

tiredemma · 01/12/2011 14:06

Ive just joined Twitter but don't have a clue what I'm doing.
Trying to 'do a blog' is bewildering

(but I have just done a night shift so not fully 'with it')

garlicnutter · 01/12/2011 14:18

Thank you, posters :)

I've sent out over 50 PMs (this is such a popular thread!) asking for email addresses. This is to add you as an 'author' to the blog at toomanycuts.blogspot.com so you can post on it. No need to reply if you don't want to post.

If not posting, you can 'join' the blog from its homepage - there's a link on the right. As a member you can add comments.

Current admins are hermionestranger and, hopefully, Hully. I've suggested a few others as admins, too. This is so there's always someone to manage things like new members and to make any changes that become needed as our blog grows.

The more you link to the blog through your Facebook, Twitter, Digg/Stumble, emails and anything else (posts on Mumsnet!), the more visibility it will gain and more people will get the chance to see what we're on about.

Clear as mud? Thought so Blush

Hullygully · 01/12/2011 14:24

Well done Garlic. This is specially for you.

Now, if I could just make it work...

MmeLindor. · 01/12/2011 14:31

Garlic
Is the name of the blog Britain is Sleepwalking or Too Many Cuts? I see the first in my tab when the blog is open but the latter on the actual blog.

Am writing my first post. How do you want me to do it? On my own blog and link into the TMCs blog?

TapselteerieO · 01/12/2011 14:34

@tapselteerieo

have just joined twitter, not following anyone yet.

TeWiharaMeriKirihimete · 01/12/2011 14:34

What's your theme MmeLindor?

I think the blog posts should be clear + simple, one RL example to explain the impact perhaps and with direct links to what readers can do to campaign about each issue.
This makes them clear "campaign posts"

So anything "educational" long explanation and detail etc (which is bloody great, because a lot of these cuts are very complex) should be posted elsewhere and then linked to the campaign post as further reading, IMO.

garlicnutter · 01/12/2011 14:44

OOH, Hully, that's EXACTLY what I wanted for Christmas! How did you know? Grin

I don't know why you can't get in to the site? Is everybody having problems??

MmeL, go you! :)
The site's address is Too Many Cuts so I put that big logo on it to help people remember. It can't be changed. The title is "Britain Is Sleepwalking" but it can be changed at any time.

Bit like a magazine called "Too Many Cuts", with the strapline "Britain Is Sleepwalking".

I agree with Te, who is being mission prefect until min-Te arrives next week!

I will be back here after it finishes. I am also toddler taming. I have let him blow dry half my hair because Mr Tumbler finished before the web chat got going Hmm

OP posts:
TeWiharaMeriKirihimete · 01/12/2011 14:50

I also have a toddler kicking me in the leg.

Ed's not doing badly now though, getting some better responses now.

MincePieFlavouredVoidka · 01/12/2011 14:51

Ooh I am on twitter - will have to go and resurrect my account.
