MN Christians, what are your favourite “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs”?

Let encourage each other
“…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…”
Ephesians 5:19

Be still my soul.
Love Devine all loves excelling
Jesu joy of man's desiring
When a knight won his spurs

@AliceLisle
Yes! That's it exactly (although our school organist played it a little faster). Thank you so, so much. It really speaks to me and was even one of our wedding hymns.

@AgileGreenSeal
That's very lovely, thank you. And thank goodness that it wasn't our school version! I doubt I would like it so much, whatever the words, if a bunch of shouty 11 to 16 year olds had tried to reproduce that tune😂.

My brother died aged 50 of a brain tumour. He had 2 years from diagnosis and planned his own funeral. This was the hymn he asked us all to listen to at the end of his Thanksgiving service and I listen to it now, imagining what the words would mean to someone who knows they only have weeks to live. I really love it.

My favourite verse from a hymn is from Oh love that will not let me go.

3 O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee.
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
and feel the promise is not vain,
that morn shall tearless be.

The words are so hopeful and comforting.

Finally I really love this modern version of Turn your eyes upon Jesus

I just love singing and love Jesus and just keeping thinking of more and more so will stop there and share more later. Have enjoyed this thread.

Sorry for your loss of your brother.
and thank you for sharing a song from his thanksgiving service.

These words really spoke to me -

Lord your mercy is so great
That you look beyond our weakness
And find purest gold in miry clay
Making sinners into saints
I will always sing your praise
Here on earth and ever after
For you've shown me Heaven's my true home
When it's all been said and done
You're my life when life is gone”

also absolutely love this verse from the classic hymn by George Matheson, 1882.

“O Joy that seekest me through pain,
I cannot close my heart to thee.
I trace the rainbow through the rain,
and feel the promise is not vain,
that morn shall tearless be.”

He said of the hymn
“It was composed with extreme rapidity; it seemed to me that its construction occupied only a few minutes, and I felt myself rather in the position of one who was being dictated to than of an original artist I was suffering from extreme mental distress, and the hymn was the fruit of pain.'”

I find it hard to sing because I just weep through it. So poignant.

It’s extraordinary how adhesive old hymns are. I attended an Anglican convent school (many years ago- I’m 70) and from age 4 to 18 we sang those hymns every day so that even now I can still sing a lot of them at my rare church attendances without looking at the words . I’m very fond of For All
the Saints- we sang it at my Mum’s funeral.

There's a light upon the mountains

Softly and tenderly Jesus is calling

I come to the garden alone

Standing on the promises

Whosoever will may come

OKScarpetta · 21/10/2024 21:12

my absolute favourite hymn I think is: Crown Him with many crowns. The last verse makes me cry in particular every time. I love a good, amazing choral version (struggling to find one on YouTube) but I don’t care about the “packaging” as the words are so beautiful…

Crown him the Lord of years,
the potentate of time,
creator of the rolling spheres,
ineffably sublime.
All hail, Redeemer, hail!
for thou hast died for me;
thy praise shall never, never fail
throughout eternity.

And favourite modern songs? Basically anything then leads me to worship.. especially if I hear my girls singing them and asking to have them on…
so a few of them:

My Song is Love Unknown

(I realised my message was getting quite long long)

This is beautiful as something so lovely about worship in different languages (every tribe and tongue, just a foretaste…).

and this encourages me. We’ve been going through some things, and I’ve found this such a blessing!

Alleluia, sing to Jesus

The lines: Where the songs of all the sinless/Sweep across the crystal sea

get me every time.

Great thread. I’m not remotely religious, but thanks to my Catholic convent school
upbringing, I love a hymn (but rarely go anywhere to sing one - funerals or weddings!).

One of my faves is As I Kneel Before You. We had it at my dad’s funeral.

Sausagenbacon · 30/10/2024 10:06

Let all Mortal Flesh Keep Silence.
Coincidentally next to my dh's favourite Just as I am. Which I used to sing without thinking, but when you pay attention to the words is very beautiful. So perhaps my other favourite

This was such a wholesome thread to stumble across this evening! Thank you!
I find myself returning again and again and again to When Peace Like a River (It is well with my soul).
Be blessed lovelies! Xx

'Teach me, my God and King'

We used to have 'Hark my soul, it is the Lord' but times and vicars and organists change and we don't seem to have it now.

Many years ago Marganita Laski was on a Radio 4 programme - probably 'With great pleasure'. Sorry if I've mis-spelled her name. She said she was a non-believer but she loved the words of 'O love that wilt not let me go'.

Just looking for some hymn recommendations for my hymn playlist & some lovely suggestions here. A few folk like dear lord & father - this is my favourite rendition, I love it.

I walked down the aisle at my wedding to this 💚

to Me Only With Thine Eyes g.co/kgs/1Nng35m

Also not seen & loved by me - blessed assurance, I stand amazed, in tenderness he sought me, great is thy faithfulness, because he lives, the ninety and nine, & will your anchor hold?
