MN Christians, what are your favourite “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs”?

Let encourage each other
“…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…”
Ephesians 5:19

I wouldn't exactly call myself a 'proper', whole-hearted Christian but absolutely love hymns and worship songs.

My favourites are:
And Can It Be.
The Servant King.
Make Me a Channel of Your Peace.
How Great Thou Art.
Great is Thy Faithfulness.
The Day Thou Gavest, Lord Has Ended.
Abide With Me
Lord of the Dance.
Shout To The Lord.

I've got so many favourites, almost all traditional ones. I love the New English Hymnal. Favourites are;
I heard the voice of Jesus say,
Mortal flesh,
Dear lord and father of mankind,
From thee all skill and science flow,
All people that on earth so dwell
Etc
I detest how great thou art and Amazing Grace.

I love the hymn "Father hear the prayer we offer" (although I don't like the tune Sussex that it is generally sung to - we had a much better one in school but I don't know what it was).

I only discovered this one recently despite being a former chorister and a self confessed hymn geek. I really like it.

My favorite is Be Thou My Vision, especially the last verse. Whatever befall, still be thou my vision… In other words whatever I have to go through, may my eyes and mind remain fixed on God.

I also love:
We cannot measure
Servant King
I am the bread of life
Guide me O Thou Great Redeemer
Do not be afraid
And can it be
Christ is made the sure foundation (reminds me of my lovely vicar friend’s licensing service)
Be still me soul
Be still for the presence of the Lord (I sang this at my beloved grandmother’s funeral. Got to the end and fainted spectacularly on aforementioned lovely vicar. We still giggle about that, she lost a shoe).

Not having much success posting the link butt: in Christ Alone my cornerstone (here in the love of Christ I stand) is lovely

AuldWeegie · 17/10/2024 23:09

Summer suns are glowing
Over land and sea
Happiness is flowing
Bountiful and free

AuldWeegie · 17/10/2024 23:14

I think the next bit is
Everything rejoices
In the mellow rays
All earth’s thousand voices
Sing the [psalm? hymn?] of praise.

Does anyone remember a beautiful hymn called Sunmer Suns are Glowing?
We used to sing it in assembly at primary school but I haven't heard it since.

My favourite hymn is Hills of the North Rejoice- the advent hymn, it's so stirring.

Yes that's the one, thanks. It's lovely.
The music teacher always made it the last hymn of the leavers' assembly and all the girls would be in tears!

Oh it so amazing what memories we have of these hymns. It’s so sad that they are getting less well known. I wish all schools still sung them

Ormally · 17/10/2024 23:29

Amazing what you remember from the 2nd half of primary school. There must be more than my school that had this configuration, but the leavers' assembly always had 'Cross Over The Road' every year because the senior school was virtually opposite...can never be without that association. And hymn 1 of Monday, Autumn term would be Autumn Days (no.4 in book)!

Globules · 17/10/2024 23:43

I've loved this song since Stuart first used it in worship at Stoneleigh Bible Week.

I'm also a massive fan of Be Thou my Vision.

@Feelingathomenow
I wish they did too, I remember so many from school.

NewName24 · 17/10/2024 23:59

Can't really go wrong with most things written by Charles Wesley.

Personally, I love Christmas Carols too.
Partly because I can often bung a descant on top, but I think partly for the 'comfort' of knowing you sing them every year and parents and Grandparents did before you. I love that people who are not regular Church goers know and love them too. A lot of it is wrapped up in memories of candlelit services, or school nativities, or Carol Singing.

LorettyTen · 18/10/2024 00:00

Another lot of happy memories come from Sunday School, where we used to sing choruses rather than hymns.

I will make you fishers of men

Trust and obey

Turn your eyes upon Jesus

Make me a Channel of your piece

I watch the Sunrise

Suffer Little Children - though typing it out I'm wondering what it ever was about!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 18/10/2024 09:58

@AgileGreenSeal Re Oh come, oh come Emmanuel, yes it's the same song (hymn) but in church it's sung a bit faster. I found the church version on YouTube but haven't mastered how to link. I much prefer the church version - I hope you can find it. I don't know why this hymn isn't more well known. There's something hypnotic about the tune.

I often reflect that Bible words have different meanings now! Suffer means allow, in this context. Allow little children to approach him.
I always wondered about 'jealous' (I am a jealous God) and found out recently that here it means keeping someone close, and faithful. Phew!

Usually I’ve heard it as a Christmas hymn. The version I posted was the end song of a documentary about the persecution of the Jews over the years, so it had a particular poignancy. I cried the first time I heard that version.

Here’s a more traditional rendition.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel is wonderful - it's based on the 'O Antiphons' that are very much associated with Advent in most traditions - not so far off a musical version of the Advent candles or Advent crown.
All given as attributes of Christ-
'O Wisdom - O Adonai - O Root of Jesse - O David's Key (Clavis David, almost rhyming in Latin, lovely) - O Dawn in the East - O King of Nations - O Emmanuel'

I have also just read that in Latin the first letters form an acrostic, something new to me: Ero Cras - "Tomorrow, I will be there".

This is a lovely thread. Great to read suggestions outside of the usual songs sung in my church, even though I love them. It is nice to broaden my outlook. I am currently enjoying Ce Ce Winans renditions of some modern hymns ‘ Believe for it ‘is a particular favourite at the moment

This is the tune in the oft used school hymn book . Can't find a sung version.

I’m not really religious at all but my favourite is God is working his purpose out

Aldo like praise my soul, guide me o thy great redeemer, abide with me, pains angelicus, locus iste, sheep may safely graze, immortal invisible

I actually use hymns when I’m needing encouragement to drive my climate change work forward so maybe I’m subconsciously more religious than I thought!
