MN Christians, what are your favourite “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs”?

Let encourage each other
“…speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord…”
Ephesians 5:19

Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing your choices 👍💕

How Great Thou Art is one of my favourites too. I particularly like Chris Rice’s version, calming and uplifting.

Other favourites are Lord of All Hopefulness, Dear Lord and Father of Mankind, Shine Jesus Shine.

Lovely thread 🥰

Let all the world in every corner sing by george herbert.

Hadn’t heard this before, but listened to it tonight. Very striking, dramatic music with wonderful words. Thanks for sharing 👍💕

Oh lovely thread. Goodness of God and I speak Jesus are good choices, @NannyR I also like In the darkness we were waiting, without hope, without light… but I can’t remember the name.

So many good modern ones. I like the modern version of The Lord’s my shepherd. And the choral one that was theme for Vicar of Dibley.

It’s hard to find a balance between the modern and ancient hymns.

praise forever to the king of kings, is the one you are thinking of.

I love most of the classic hymns. This version of Now the Green Blade Riseth, sung by Steve Winwood, is a cracker:

That is a cracker 👍💕

I particularly liked this verse
In the grave they laid Him, Love who had been slain,
Thinking that He never would awake again,
Laid in the earth like grain that sleeps unseen:
Love is come again like wheat that springeth green.”

A new song to me. Thanks for sharing it 😊

"And can it be" and "how great thou art" are two of my favourite hymns.
My favourite modern worship songs at the moment are "goodness of God" and "I speak Jesus"

Oh those are four classics, old and new.
great choices! Thanks @NannyR 💕

I think the song you referenced there with the first lines is King of kings.

It’s a superb song. Beautiful.
Thanks for sharing 👍💕

O Holy Night is my favourite hymn, especially this Aled Jones / Malakai Bayoh version

Nighttimenope · 17/10/2024 20:57

How Can I Keep From Singing by Audrey Assad

Psalm 143 v 6 onwards to the tune ‘heber’.

BigcatLittlecat · 17/10/2024 21:01

Jesu lover of my soul, sung to Aberystwyth and Shine Spirt Shine.
Both sung at my sister's funeral so both very emotive for me!
Great thread!

Ormally · 17/10/2024 21:08

Everything with a jazzy alto or harmony line, but top of the list being Great Is Thy Faithfulness (Salvation Army style if it's possible);
The Servant Song;

I don't think you can beat the Wesley hymns. The tunes are so good that they are easy to sing, even when you don't know them.
I also love How Great Thou Art and The Day Thou Gavest.
Heard a new hymn (new to me) the other day and really loved the music. It's called Oh come, oh come Emmanuel.

With the right hymn/music, if I'm lucky I find I can almost go into a hypnotic trance.

@Nighttimenope

I hadn’t heard How Can I Keep From Singing before and am just so moved by it.
What a song to minister to hurting hearts.
I needed to hear this. Thank you. 🙏🏻💕 also Psalm 143 - so real so relevant

Ooh I love hymns

be still for the presence of the lord
tell out my soul
o god of earth and altar (prob because it’s used in an iron maiden song😄)
shine Jesus shine

my grandad was a church organist so grew up listening to them all

Menopausalsourpuss · 17/10/2024 21:47

10000 reasons, Servant King, There is a higher throne - all new.

Older -Holy,Holy,Holy, Be still for the presence of the Lord.

@BigcatLittlecat sorry for your loss, and thank you for sharing your sister’s funeral hymns. I know Jesu, Lover of my Soul to the tune Aberystwyth 💕 but Shine Spirit Shine is new to me. Will try to find it. 👍😊

@Ormally great choices 👍💕 thank you for sharing them - love Salvation Army renditions too

@Pocketfullofdogtreats
those Wesleys knew a thing or two about writing hymns, that’s for sure 😊 👍

you mention oh come, oh come Emmanuel

I wonder if it’s the same song I’m thinking of? I found this version of it very moving.

I looked it up on YouTube - beautiful rendering by Aled Jones - what wonderful words. 💕

@Feelingathomenow it wouldn’t be easy, being a church organist. Well done, your grandad. 👏🏻
I recognised all your lovely choices, except one - O God of Earth and Altar- now I need to look it up. 👀

@Menopausalsourpuss
loving all your choices, old and new. Some I need to revisit. Thanks for sharing 👍💕

Does anyone remember a beautiful hymn called Sunmer Suns are Glowing?
We used to sing it in assembly at primary school but I haven't heard it since.

My favourite hymn is Hills of the North Rejoice- the advent hymn, it's so stirring.
